  1. For the door seal problem, try 303 Aerospace Protectant. http://www.303products.com/ I use to use silicone ( it should be 100% pure silicone) but now use the 303 a couple of times a year.
  2. Thanks. That's the one I have, I guess he did get it right. The ones I bought before were a gold color but the P/N on the new one is correct. They got the air filter wrong though. The counter guy said his computer listed 2 filters for my car and gave me the wrong one. The first time that's happened in 12 years of buying filters for the Impreza.
  3. HI, does anyone know the Subaru part number for a front axle nut to fit a 1996 Impreza Outback Wagon? I think my less than competent dealer gave me the wrong part once again! Thanks
  4. 98EJ20, can't you just do a search and quit bothering us! Seriously, when I first registered on the predecessor to that other forum, it was a good, helpful place. Now it seems that every other question (especially maintenance and service questions) is answered with "do a search". May get you an answer sometimes, but not very helpful, unlike this forum. To quote aircraft engineer: "offer help? nah we shoot yah for NOT offering help." Welcome to USMB
  5. That's right, next to the hinge. It's been a little while, but I believe the wires were wrapped in tape and when they were unwrapped 6 or 7 wires were broken all in a line. On my car ('96 Impreza Outback) the wires flex quite sharply next to the hinge and it was just a fatigue issue over time. You've got the wiring harness location right and I think there were only 2 wires of the same color going into the hatch so checking for continuity should be easy. That's how I first found the problem.
  6. +1 for crazyhorse001 Had problems with my rear wiper. First, it stopped "parking". Then stopped working altogether. Finally, the high mounted stop light quit working. Checked under the boot on the right side of the hatch and 6 or 7 of the wires looked like they were cut with a pair of wire cutters. Soldered them back together and everything works again. Also had to fix the washer tubing at the left side of the hatch and the squirter works now too. BTW, there are about 12 wires running through that boot, including the defroster wires.
  7. Medium strength threadlocker and 125 ft-lb. I've changed my timing belt a couple of times and put the car in 5th gear with the parking brake on, worked for me. (96 Impreza, 2.2)
  8. I wasn't necessarily saying that it needed fixing, and I don't plan on spending a grand to fix the ticking. Just looking for opinions as to the cause, possible fixes and problems that might arise from doing nothing. Yes, it's 10 years old, 127k + miles and has a sticking (or bad) HLA, not piston slap. Other than that, the car runs great, still looks good and I plan on running it to at least 200k miles, hopefully more. The car also likes the new tires I just bought for it and put 2,500 miles on it in the past month. I don't mind spending a little money on it now and then to keep it running well.
  9. Thanks Matt, I did see your thread when I was searching for this problem. The ticking began before my oil pump R & R though and I let the sealant cure before starting the engine. At this point I may just try MMO or some other snake oil again before looking at replacing an HLA. I have the FSM and after reviewing the procedure it doesn't seem like too big of a job. And unless someone can tell me otherwise, it seems that the ticking isn't a big problem (please correct me if I'm wrong!).
  10. A few more notes. Oil level is full, uses about 1/2 - 1 qt between oil changes (4-5000 miles), I'll occasionally add an oz or so of oil as needed to keep it topped off between changes. I've been using M1 5W-30 since 10,000 miiles, switched to M1 10W-30 at the last oil change to see if it made any difference (it didn't seem to). Also, I removed and resealed the oil pump, tightened rear cover plate screws and replaced the oil pump o-ring during a timing belt change 5,000 miles ago. Any further opinions as to any harm it may be doing. I've been doing some more reading and the "Tick of Death" may not be!
  11. I have a 1996 Impreza 2.2l, 127,000 miles, which has what I believe to be hydraulic lash adjuster (HLA) ticking. The ticking is frequent, but not constant. It will sometimes go away for a few seconds to a few minutes, then return. About 10-15 k miles ago, I ran Seafoam in the oil (less than the recommened amount and only for 100-200 miles) and don't think it helped much. I generally don't like to put anything in the crankcase except oil. I would like to know if there's anything I can use in the oil to free up the HLA's. Maybe the Seafoam routine again, or AutoRX which I've been reading about on NASIOC. Does anyone think this will actually fix the problem? Now I know the only real way to fix this is to remove the cam and replace the offending HLA, but I'm not quite ready to do this. I only call this the "tick of death" because I've heard the term used a few times recently and it's beginning to worry me. Is there any truth to this, any long term detrimental affects to letting this problem continue? I want to keep the car another 100,000 milies.
  12. LocTite/Permatex #599 Ultra-Grey and 3M T-3 Silicone (black) #08670 are both equivalents to Threebond 1215. I just used the Ultra-Grey when re-sealing my oil pump without problems.
  13. Searching this site, you've probably found this EndWrench article on the 2.2l timing belt. If not, it has some good info in the timing belt change. The crankshaft and both camshaft sprockets have marks on the face of the sprockets which should line up with the notches on the rear timing belt cover when there in the 12 o-clock position. I just did the second timing belt change on my car and both times I had the parking brake set and transmission in 5th gear to break loose the crankshaft bolt, no problems. Still some windup, but not like 1st gear.
  14. I'm about to do the 120K maintenance on my 1996 Impreza Wagon 2.2l and have a couple of questions. 1. Do the camshaft sprockets have to be removed to remove the water pump or the oil pump? The manual says yes but I'm not to sure. 2. Without the special tool, could a strap wrench be used to hold the camshaft sprockets (possibly used with an old timing belt)? 3. When I changed my timing belt at 60k (4 years ago) I bought a new timing belt tensioner in case I needed to replace it. I didn't use it and it has remained in it's original packing (box and plastic bag) and stored inside. Any views if it would still be good. Not sure why it wouldn't. 4. Shouldn't the crankshaft bolt be torqued to about 125-130 ft-lb vs 69-76 ft-lb per the manual? Thanks, Dave
  15. '96 Impreza Wagon When the rear wiper was turned on and back to off, the wiper would complete one cycle (to the right then left) and stop in the horizontal "park" position. Now, when I try that, the wiper just stops in whatever position it happens to be in. Any ideas what might be causing that to happen? Thanks
