  1. Thx RWEDDY, but will they replace both sides of HG's or only the one with evident leaking? (I fear I know the answer). thx.
  2. Further to this, mine is 2001 Forester with 92k miles on her. I think driver side HG external leak is happening in fairly small way. I top up coolant once a year with a cup or two of premix. And yes, I had the super-duper official Subaru coolant additive put in under warranty. So, my question is, can I take my car into the dealer and point to the external leak and have them replace the HG for free, since it has under 100k on it? Anyone done this? thx.
  3. See if your heat shield is hanging down. Could be that it is and doesn't let the cat heat up as well as it should to operate efficiently. Just a theory. But on mine, this did seem to be the prob, since I fixed it by reattaching the heat shield with a hose clamp...and the code hasn't come back on yet. (been 2 months.)
  4. I am glad site is back too, but can I change this color scheme from light grey on dark grey to something easier on my eyes? Any idea how to do it? thx.
  5. I paid $580 recently for both rear wheel bearings to be replaced. Independent shop.
  6. My car is a 2001 Forester with 90k miles on her. From my searching online, it seems like the usual suspects for leaks on cars 5+ yrs old are: 1. O-rings at ports and 2. Condensor rusting out and getting a hole in it. If #2 happens to you, and your car is 5+ yrs old, tell the mechanic to replace all the O-rings while he is in there -- just for good preventive maintenance. That way, you won't have to go back into his shop a few weeks later to have them replaced for $187.30 like I did.
  7. I think the raman axle is only $60 at AutoZone. Comes pre-greased and ready to go in. I would go that route. Do a search on this site for good RnR posts.
  8. Go ahead and replace the axles. If you are handy, have the time and tools, you can replace them yourself. Search this site for some excellent how-to rnr articles people have put up.
  9. 2001 Forester, 90k miles. A/C has always worked fine, never any work done on it. Worked fine through 2hr trip one night, then the next morning...no cool air at all. Fan blew, but only warm ambient air. I checked all belts, fuses and relay switch, but all were ok. I looked over all hoses and lines, couldn't see condenser well, since it is jammed in there...but saw no obvious leaks. There is no sight glass on modern a/c systems. I tried to listen to the compressor under the hood as my wife turned the a/c on and off, and I couldn't hear it engaging so I figured that must be the culprit. I took it to the shop (Mike's in Allston) and his guess as I dropped it off was not the compressor, but a leak somewhere in system. He re-pressurized and immediately found the leak in lower driver's side corner of the condenser. $520 later for a new condenser, I am back on the road with cold a/c. Just wanted to share symptoms and resolution to help the next guy.
  10. don't know if this will help, but when my 2001 Forester (83k) was bucking/coughing intermittently it turned out to be the front o2 sensor needed replacement. I NEVER got a code for the front o2 sensor. Instead, I kept getting PO302 and PO304 misfire codes.
  11. How much are you folks paying for upgrade new rear bearings for a Forester? just curious.
  12. If that front 02 sensor is older than 40k miles, maybe replace it. My 2001 Forester demands a new one every 40k. But I do mostly city driving.
  13. Many thanks for the code chart. Is there a website that has all of the codes? Seems hard to find. Where did you get those codes? thx.
  14. Hi, On my 2001 Forester, I found the black ABS connector above the brake pedal, I stuck the nearby black ground wire into the lower right hole, and I have read out the codes. What I need now is a website that describes what each code means. Does anyone know of a website I can go to to find this out? I believe my codes were: 23, 24, 27. Thx for any help. And thx to Porcupine for telling me how to get the codes using the connector.
  15. I am riding Winterforce M&S on my 2001 Forester and they easily handled the 8" of global warming that got dumped on us last night in Boston. The problem is not you and your 4wd car if it rolls fine, the problem is that every 3rd wurld cab driver around Boston has rear wheel drive and bald tires....so they clog up every intersection, and you go nowhere. Took me an hour to cover about 6 miles to get home.
  16. Dang...So, I really like this indie shop, but..... I took it to them to have both rear bearings replaced. This place has always done quality, fast work at a decent price on all my cars. Welllllllll, yesterday they tried to pull the ole, "your ABS wire must have been damaged cuz it broke, but don't worry we soldered it back together for you." Riiiiiiiiiight. Youbetcha! So, I asked him if they did a good job repairing the ABS wire? "Oh, yes, it's like new now." I said, great, "so you don't mind giving me a 5 yr replacement warranty on that ABS sensor? Since I examined all of my sensors and wires 2 months ago when I had to replace a front one(which a previous mechanic had broken and soldered back together, btw)...and the rear wires were in perfect condition." I had him write and sign on the service receipt that he would warranty/replace that ABS wire fix for 5 yrs. Sux, cuz I really like that shop....just goes to show, you are better off doing your own work if you can, you will be more careful than they are.
  17. Just wanted to post the price I paid to get both rear wheel bearings replaced on my 2001 Forester 86k miles at an indie shop here in Boston. $691.70 tax included. Dealership around here quoted closer to $750. So, if you can do it yourself, you will save some good coin.
  18. try replacing/testing the front 02 sensor if it hasn't been changed out yet.
  19. I used Lucas in my leaking Saab 1989 9000 when its pw started squealing. Worked perfectly, never needed to add more, drove it that way for years.
  20. Try replacing the front 02 sensor. Just humor me. I chased sporadic misfire in cyl's 2&4 for a year before I determined this was the cause. MIGHT just be coincidence that you had your hg's replaced at same time.
  21. Hi Sparky, Don't mess with the white one hanging near the accel pedal, that aint it. Try the black, smaller one, closer to the brake pedal....my 2001 Forester had 2 wires hanging from it, presumably to use to jump the terminals. Let us know how it went.
