  1. So here's where I ended up at today and it's running pretty dam good. Timing is at 14 degrees Primary Idle Jet is a 55 Primary main jet is a 140 Secondary main jet is a 135 On the top of the carb at the top of the emulsion tubes, Primary is a 210, secondary is a 200.
  2. Thank You! I have jets from 120-160. I'll throw in a 140 tomorrow and see how it does.
  3. Nitrous is cheap power. If done right. You must have the proper ring gap, timing and wet system. Or you'll just blow it. Plus, with the small displacement, low compression and lack of fuel, 50hp shot would be more like a 10hp shot.
  4. So I changed my idle jet to a 55. Runs much better. Still curious about what people at altitude are running for a primary main and secondary main jet. Mine are both 130's. Thanks!
  5. Oil, hiking boots and best 4x4.... Really no wrong answers, just 1000 opinions. I use Wix or Napa Gold filters. Good media and higher bypass rating(filters more oil). 1984 GL: Oil, I've decided to use 3qts of a 10w-30 with 1 1/2qts of Rotella 15w-40 added in. HD oil has more additives that help with wear and keep things clean. Kinda like "high mileage" regular oil, just more of that stuff is already in HD oil, zinc and detergents. 2010 E350 van: 5qts 5w-20 + 1qt 15w-40 2017 Legacy: 5qts 0w-20 1982 BMW: 4 1/2qts 20w-50 Valvoline race
  6. Just did both front CV's on my 84 today. Took more time than expected. Definitely NOT as easy as the newer Subies. https://www.ebay.com/itm/CV-Axle-Shaft-Constant-Velocity-Drive-Axle-Cardone-Reman-fits-80-84-Subaru-DL/162678607736?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649
  7. 100% agree with that. My son bought an 82 BMW 320i for his first car. He's received tons of compliments. Everybody under the age of 25 has an STI, Civic or Focus SV. All are faster than his old Bimmer, but none have the style.
  8. Curiosity got to me. Went outside in the dark and checked the primary idle jet.... Mine is a #45.
  9. I'm at 5200' also. Boulder is around 6k' and everything else is higher around here. I'll have to check my idle jet, haven't done that yet. I currently have my timing at 10 btdc at 750rpm. For emissions I backed it to 6 btdc to get a little cleaner burn during emissions. I got the choke tuned finally on the weber, choke engages under 50 degrees and have it high idle at 1200rpm. It does seem to have a slightly rough idle after the choke kicks off, possibly low idle fuel starving.
  10. Checked out both valve covers. There's no sticker on either. I might pull one cover and check them to see if it feels like there's space in them.
  11. Another stupid question..... Do I need to adjust valves on these little motors? I'm not familiar with Subaru's older than 1998. My son's 82 BMW has to have the valves checked about every other month. But he does run the piss out of it.... Thanks
  12. Any idea of what air and emulsion jets are in your carb? I didn't get any paperwork from the guy on the Weber he installed, I'm thinking he ordered the kit but never ordered high altitude jets. If you know what jets you have, let me know. I'd like to fine tune mine a little more. FWIW I did my emissions at the I25 and HWY 52 station by Dacono. It's never busy there and the staff actually tries to get things to pass emissions. It's right behind Earthroamer and Vans Industrial Rental.
  13. Passed emissions today! Took the a/f screw on bottom of the carb in until the motor dropped roughly 50 rpm, fully opened the choke, set the timing at 6 degrees BTDC @ 700rpm and changed the fouled spark plugs. I didn't end up changing any of the jetting. By the time I get tags and repair the front CV I'll be into less than $600. Should be an awesome winter vehicle!
  14. I just bought a 84 GL 4wd 4spd here in Denver for $400. It's rough and the guy was trying to get the Weber carb to work right on it. He couldn't get it past emissions. I've got it running 100% better but still a little too rich to pass. Going to try and jet down the primary and secondary as soon as I can get a baseline idea of what people are running here at altitude. I bought it because since I first worked on one in the late 80's back in Iowa, I really liked the design of the Brat/Justy/GL. I'd never pay a lot for any of them, I just think they are kinda neat.
