I own a 2000 Jetta TDI. I get an average of 48.5 MPG. 48Plus with the A/C running. If it was put in a little Subaru I am sure it would get at least 50MPG. People are putting TDI motors in everything. Just remember a Diesel engine is a lot heavier than a gas engine of the same size. Mine is a 1.9 L. And the new ones are 2.0. There is also a V10 TDI in the Touareg which is the fastest Non Gasoline car to go to the top of Pikes Peak. If a Timing belt goes bad you have to replace the heads. Total destruction. Timing belts are good for 100k miles for the 2003 Belt kits and up. 60k Miles for older types. My 2000 has 240K miles and runs like new. I expect to put one more Timing belt in it and that should last me to 380K miles. Still has original front struts,Alternator,Starter and all the original front end parts.

OK I found the Knock sensor, can't tell much about it. I also found the O2 Sensor(second one) is unplugged. Looks like they went on a very muddy road and might have pulled it out. I had to crumble the dirt off the connection just to see where the 3 wires went. I just need to know what wire goes where on that sensor. One black wire with copper connector and the other two are white wires with silver connectors. The connection has one prong on one side with 2 on the other side of it. Any ideas? On a side note, the tranny looked like it might have been rebuilt as there was newer looking seals around it.

This is a 1997 Legacy GT Automatic. The Codes are P0141 For the O2 Sensor and P0325 for the Knock sensor. Both are Malfunction. I will see if I can find the Knock sensor and see if it has the crack in it or a wire problem. One thing I should mention is, after clearing the codes the O2 Sensor comes back first and then after driving it the Knock sensor code shows up.

Trying to figure out what all this Subie needs. Took it for a ride around a 3 mile block. Ran good until it warmed up. Then it started to spudder and if I gave it much fuel ti would die. First off the O2 Sensor Bank 1 Sensor 2 Malfunction Also Knock Sensor Malfunction. Questions are: Can either of these cause the car to run that way? Run good until warmed up? Sorry I am no mechanic but try to learn something new all the time. I know neither of these are expensive but I would like to know if they can cause the poor running. So far I found it needs: 2 tires on back to match the fronts. Knock Sensor O2 Sensor Front Drivers side CV shaft Muffler with some pipe Spare tire Jack Every thing else seems to work well. No leaks of oil nor Tranny fluid. I figure I can get everything for around $400 or less. I have about $600 in the car from the trade of an ATV. I just don't want to put too much into the car as it will be just a spare car for when a family member has a break down. Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the info. I saw on Ebay a muffler with some pipe that is 56" long. It looks like it bolts onto the center where the second cat is. Let me look at it again tomorrow and see just what all I need. Colorado Springs is 5 hours from me. I made a few trips down there a few years back. That muffler on ebay is this one. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Natural-New-Muffler-56-Round-Sedan-Subaru-Legacy-99-98-97-96-95-Parts-Car-Auto-/230716931120?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Year%3A1997|Make%3ASubaru|Model%3ALegacy|Submodel%3AGT&vxp=mtr&hash=item35b7ccfc30

Thanks for the info.. I finally found a solution for now. I disconnected the ground to the battery and waited 10 Minutes. I then turned the key to the on position and then reconnected the battery. Turned the key off and then it started right up. I looked at a lot of ideas and none of them worked until I found that one. I also did find a diagram of the complete Factory setup and in it the guy said I could have just disconnected the Starter Interrupt Harness for a second and then back in and then it would have started. Didn't try that as the first worked good.

I bought traded for this car a while back and the guy told me what to do with the alarm in case the battery went dead but I have since forgotten. I DO NOT have remote entry. Just one single key is all he gave me. I know I am supposed to push in the button under the dash and hold it until the doors lock. I also have the key turned to the on position while holding the button in. I just don't know what to do after that? I tried 3 times and it turns over but will not start. What I would like to do it Disable the Alarm. Thanks for any help.

My son-in-law just replaced a ton of parts on an Isuzu Truck. I asked him one day if the cables were all OK. He said yes. After buying another part he decided to look at the cables and found the ground cable had a crack in it. I asked him long before he replace the Voltage Regulator,Battery,Carb kit,Plugs,Wires and ECU. It would idle just fine and then would stall at lights or after idling for a long time.
