  1. Hey guys and gals, it's been a while! My 86 Subaru has been driving great ever since I replaced the axles and bearings. The car just recently started making this grinding noise coming from the front passenger side suspension. It sounded identical to a rock being stuck in the brake rotor. After realizing that there was no rock, I replaced the bearings. It turns out, I didn't even grease the inside bearing *slaps self in face*. The bearing was rusted and frozen solid. I replaced the bearings, made sure there was a ton of grease, test drove it, and its still grinding! Its a little quieter in a straight line, but gets louder when turning a corner. Id prefer not to dump a ton of money into this thing, being that its not a daily driver, so im hoping that someone will be able to help me out. Thanks!
  2. Hey guys. Been gone for a bit, bought an old Chevy truck and rebuilding the 454 has been the priority. I think we decided to just leave the Subaru alone. We will still take it out and do fun things, but for now we’re just gonna get the engine running strong and make sure it’s mechanically sound, and then it’ll be our full time camping rig. I hope this thing can handle backwoods in stock form, I’m sure we’ll be pushing it to it’s full limits at times.
  3. Is there an ideal steel wheel to run that has an offset that’ll make the wheels stick out farther, while clearing brakes and everything? Also, do I need to be careful about the hub being too big or small or whatever?
  4. Thank you! That’s everything that I needed to know. I’ll keep an eye out for king springs. I live 3 hours out of Portland, so I’m sure I can make some calls and find a set locally.
  5. Doing some research, I found that you can also redrill your hubs, versus redrilling the wheels themselves. Is there a plus or minus to either?
  6. My girlfriend said we aren’t allowed to get rid of the 86 GL, so we’re just gonna run it the way it is (without lifting it). With that being said, I have a few questions on this car. 1. The car runs fine above 1500 RPM. Under that, it acts like it struggles to get fuel, and at idle the RPMs stay at about 800, but it sounds like it’s at 300, and the car shakes. Even if I rev it up at idle, it sounds like it’s struggling at the low RPM. Is this just the Carburetor? If so, I have a guy that rebuilds my carbs, but is it worth upgrading instead? 2. I know my last thread was about lifting the car, but now that we aren’t going to do that, I still have interest in doing a couple things to it. I keep hearing that people run “King springs” on their lifted Subaru’s, where do I get these and can I run them on my stock setup? 3. I want the most cost effective way to run a different lug pattern wheel. I know I can find the 4x140 spacers for fairly cheap, and I am not willing to spend $450 on the 5x100 adapters, so I was thinking that I could just buy a set of wheels and have them redrilled. Is this a smart choice or not? Thanks for the input.
  7. I have to talk to the other half first. She loves this car lol.
  8. I appreciate all the advice. Obviously there are several different opinions on this car. This Subaru has been a good little driver for my girlfriend, who drives it when her P.O.S. Powerstroke needs work done to it (every weekend). I think maybe we’ll just go ahead and pick up a blown up forester and throw an engine in it. I have one for sale local from me, automatic with 220k miles. I hope the transmission can last.....
  9. Hmm. Okay, I’ll give it a shot. Hell, a 2 inch lift will only run me a couple hundred bucks, and there’s no need for modifying anything else right? Also, where can I find oversized tires for a 13 inch wheel? Everything comes up as stock size, or ATV tires. What else should I know about this car? Are all 4 axles the same (so I can just carry a couple spares)? Do I have to fabricate my own bracket for a winch? If so, where do people usually put them? Should I be running skid plates, and if so, maybe you guys can show me pictures of how you have yours mounted. Thanks!
  10. Hahah you guys have me a little nervous now! Lol. I don’t want to put $1000 worth of lift and tires in this thing to break something and not be able to replace it. So I know GD mentioned replacing it with a 1st gen forester. I’m not opposed to the idea. We only chose this car because it was free. But we have some funds set apart for a fun off road rig. Is a first gen forester the best bang for your buck on an older off road rig? I want to be able to walk in to an auto parts store and get new reliable parts. I also want the vehicle to be able to actually do some technical off roading than anything. if a first gen forester is the general consensus, in what setup should I be looking for? Trans, preferred engine, etc.
  11. I appreciate everyone’s advice and opinions lol. I think I’ll stick with a 2 inch lift, on 27s, like one of you suggested. As for axles, all I do is go to the auto parts store and order them. I just replaced both, took me 2 hours. It was the first time they’ve been done ever (227k miles).
  12. Hey Subaru people! I’m new here, and this is my first Subaru. Anyways, I have a few questions about small lift kits, and accessories in general. My girlfriend and I would like to turn this Subaru into an off-road vehicle for camping and fun trail trips. Even with research, I’m not understand exactly what I need to complete this project. I want to put a lift on it, anywhere from 2-6 inches depending on the modifications needed. I found sites for this, but do you have a specific site recommendation to purchase a lift from? Also, other that the lift itself, what do I need to make the lift work, or can I just buy a 6 inch lift and it’ll bolt right up and I’m ready for the trails? I hear about having to lengthen the steering shaft, is there a custom shaft someone sells or do I have to fabricate it? (I can’t weld, but I can cut stuff lol). Basically, I want my Subaru to have enough clearance to actually have fun on some technical stuff, but I need to know exactly what I need in addition to a lift, and if the car itself will actually handle offroading. Also, where do you guys mount winches to? We off road alone, and a winch is somewhat necessary. This is a car that was handed down to us through family, and we both have reliable daily’s, so im okay with making this Subaru totally impractical for everyday driving. Thanks!
