I searched for the EA82 to EJ swap.

Well I needed to buy a beater while I was putting a rebuild in my 95 Nissan Pathfinder. So I found a 88 DL Wagon on Craigslist. Ever since then I've been in love with old Subaru's. I've had more fun in the Subaru than my lifted Pathfinder.

  1. Okay, I want to thank everyone for your opinions and saving me a lot of work. So I'm swapping my EA82 engine (88 fuel injection) into another 88 cause my current body is all beat up. The guy I'm buying the new parts car from had a couple of those old Ea81 transaxles and I always thought it would be cool to have 4H,4L. But now that I know that my 5 speed is superior I'm going to just swap the engine and original transaxle into the new body. The car I'm buying is an automatic but it's also an 88. Is there anything I should be aware of like motor mounts and transmission mounts? Cause if every thing lines up, all I have to do is cut a hole for the cane.
  2. Alright, so I got my hands on a Ea81 transmission (4h,4L) and I want to swap it into my 88. I also got the backing plate so that the starter won't be an issue expect I heard you might have to use some shims? I'm also curious about the drive shaft are the yokes the same, will I have to cut or add to the drive shaft? Are the cross members the same? The main question I have before I dive into this project. Will I have to change the gear ratios in the front and rear axle? If anyone can help me with info for the swap I would very much appreciate it. Thanks.
  3. This is my first post and I've come here because I can't find any info online about the transmission swap I want to do. I currently drive an 88 Loyale DL wagon. But it's to hard to find parts for in my state. I know a guy who makes a long travel kit that bolts on to the following vehicles. 90-95 legacys or outbacks. So I want to purchase an outback or Legacy and the long travel kit but I want to swap an old GL 4H,4L transmission. I want to escape from all wheel drive plus have the old Loyale fun. So I know I'm going to need the famous adapter plate people use for the EA81 to EJ swap and I'm going to have to extend or shorten the drive shaft. There's not going to be to much electrical but if any one has info on that, that would be appreciated. Also I need to figure out the front axles. Im going to have to mix some parts but don't have the doner car yet to get a good idea. I need the front axles of the outback or legacy to be like factory so that the long travel kit will fit.
