Thanks for the responses, I'll plan on running over to Autozone so they can plug in their OBD-II. BUT...the check engine light is off this morning. Can they only obtain a code if the check engine light is NOT on? Can they obtain a code from some kind of memory which caused the light to come on yesterday?

For the first time since I purchased this vehicle new, the check engine light on my 2002 Legacy L Wagon M/T w/112k mi, came on a few days ago and has stayed on. I did try several times to take off/on the gas cap, but to no avail. The vehicle seems to be running just fine, but don't want to ignore it for too long. Does this warrant a trip to the dealer and how much should it cost to check the codes? I heard Autozone can pull the codes for free. Should I go there first? Thanks in advance for the advice.

I have an 02 Legacy Wagon with 95k mi and for about the past 10k miles, when braking at highway speeds, there is a substantial shimmy/vibration felt and seen in the steering wheel. This not felt on the brake pedal, just in the steering wheel, and the steering wheel does not seem to be pulling to either direction. Any suggestions on where to start looking where the problem might be? On a sidebar question, does anyone know if there is an outfit which I can purchase OEM Subaru parts and use my Subaru bucks?

Thanks for all the great advice. I actually have 4 new tires now and plan on going Monday morning to Subaru for an alignment (using my Subaru bucks). I'll let them know how the old tires were wearing and ask how far off everything was. I don't think the excessive inbound wear (on tire shoulder) was due to driving habits or under inflation, as I do keep on top of proper pressure. I cannot recall if the excessive wear was mainly from the tires being on the front. On page 11-44 of my owner's manual it says for rotation "Each tire must be kept on it's orginal side of vehicle" http://my.subaru.com/vehicle/Manuals/2002/Legacy/02_legacy_om_11.pdf Like someone here mentioned, on the Michelin website it does say for AWD, you should cross rotate. Geez.

Does my 02 Legacy Wagon have the ability to have all 4 wheels aligned? Also, my owners manual states that proper tire rotation is front to back not crossways like some other vehicles recommend. After 41k miles on the original tires, all four tires have uneven wear, with excessive wear on the inbound perimeter of each tire. Is it correct to just rotate back to front? Crossway rotation (left to right as well as front to back) would more evenly wear tires. Thanks for any advice.

Thanks for the replies! Job was fairly easy, after removing snorkel to air cleaner, battery and washer reservoir to gain access to plug wires. Used a standard spark plug socket with 10" extension on passanger side and 6" & 3" extension on the driver's side. Did not need an elbow, like the endwrech procedure said.
