  1. I blew up an open diff in sand once, rpms were too high and spidergears shattered when I got traction. I got home and promptly welded them together never had a problem since. The R160 ring and pinion are usually strong enough to handle anything a subie can throw at it. The spider gears are the weak link. 510 guys run R160s behind turbo VG30's, with the spiders welded of course...

  3. Well depends on what z you have but the R160 is actually pretty stout, as long as it's welded. The pinion and ring gear are very tough and can take a good amount of power, the spider gears on the other hand... well that something different. Oh and the 300zx rearends are vlsd not what you want really. The easiest and cheapest way to get these lsd rearends is just buy the whole turbo wagon for $150 like I did think of it this way you pay 150 for the lsd and get the rest of the car free!
  4. Yeah you stuck it real good man... cobalt bits wont touch that hardened steel dont waste your time. (Been there done that) Your best bet is to get your aceteylene torch, heat up real good and then wack it out. Looking at the metals involved the roll pin should melt first. hint* hint* And no butane wont work either. I would replace the axle, axle seal and trans fluid after wards though.... :-\ good luck
  5. Well i left an oil pressure sensor on a trail once. oh sorry, twice.... but i got them later. It was a muddy hill and didn't see the large rock at top. came down on top of it. bent my 3/16 skid pan and broke the sensor clean off. couldn't find it at 12:30AM, so a bolt, electrical tape, some hose, and some clamps. And lots of colorful vocabulary, then drove it home. A large rock i was climbing over claimed the second one. Hose clamps are very useful!
  6. That is most awesome way to put it! Just track them down and beat the ^#@! out of them with a baseball bat. Claim protection of property or something. But sorry about that, people like that are out there. had to leave my Z overnight somewhere so i removed the coil (dosen't stop towing theft though...) hope you find it good luck!

Not on here as often as i want so replys are scarce but anyways it depends on the axle left front is easier then the right front right rear is easier the left rear I built a slide hammer for the front axles and it cuts down the time considerabley I also use cotterpins. basicaly i can do an axle change in 15min to 45min depending on which one it is. Oh and my right front is clicking when i turn so it's on it's way out. Carquest axles suck BTW
  8. Well I have a lifted 92 loyale wagon and i have grenaded 2 axles so far, oh and the diff too! First one was a tight ravine area and got it stuck, In the natural event of getting it unstuck. High rpm's, 27" bfg a/t, and suddenly getting traction did not help the right front axle and it blew apart. Rear end was the same story, high rpms, sudden traction, spider gears blew up. Second axle i was testing the newly welded diff. and was too lazy to remove the axle so driving back on pavement it popped and that was that. The eventual plan is to have 6 or so lifetime axles and never buy axles again after that
  9. Just go to a junkyard and get a d/r you will need it, trust me. As for tire size i would go with a 26 max of 28 inch tire because of the loss of gearing. basicly you lose 5th gear. your axles and your engine will work plenty hard with 27's i would not go higher for your daily driver. Mine is a daily driver and i have 27's i would not go higher! unless you put an ej in, then it's fair game
  10. We have a similar meet for datsuns every year, For the car show. when the winner is determined they take a digital picture of that car and use a laptop to post it on a projector for everyone to see. Gets rid of alot of confusion
  11. yes clean that up and blow out the disty with compressed air, water has a tendency to get in there and not come out.

To answer your question, yes it can be done, I did it not to long ago, 92 fwd loyale wagon lifted it and put 4wd under it, the lift works fine. you have to cut the fenders a little more then normal if you want 27inch tires though. the 2wd struts are shorter and are not as beefy, I broke mine in an off road excursion. Remember the lift is a body lift you gain no ground clearance without larger tires just letting you know. Just lift it people will just look and be like and
  13. You have a R160 diff. R180's should be compatible, the spline count is 25 (have one on my desk) the drive shaft flange looks like it will work on any of the diffs 160,180,200 if the gears are 3.9 then it should work. the ideal way to lock the rear would be to put an r200 in and weld it up and switch to 300zx rear components. an er27 couldn't break it. but thats my .02
  14. Well i found the problem... It was a broken strut hat I had no idea they did that! so i went to the junkyard and got new strut all is good now. except for that damn tire drone

Mind you if a R180 fits then a R200 will fit (might have to mess with the mustache bar) If anyone is interested, ill do a spline count on an r200, just let me know 280z and 280zx's have R200's it's a much beefier diff, their ratio's are 3.54, 3.7, 3.9 stay away from the 1975 year they are wierd and the diff may not adapt well. 300zx 84-89 have R200's with lsd but their ratio is only 3.7, swap gears from a 280z. You get a 3.9 with lsd and an indestructable diff. (not all are lsd look for a finned cover!) The idea of this would be to run 300zx axles, thus less axle breakage! But it is only an idea, goodluck with the path you choose.
