  1. My 97 2.5 GT with the Phase I engine is approaching 120,000. What are my changes of taking it past 200,000 without this problem rearing it's ugly head. Is there a consistent mileage were the head gaskets go or is it just luck or misfortune. Ciao
  2. My 97 Legacy is approaching 120,000 miles. Currently I put about 22,000 freeway miles on it a year, looking to have it last past 200,000. I live in Santa Rosa, work in Alameda in the San Francisco Bay Area. Can anyone hook me up with a good mechanic in either of those areas? Thanks
  3. Did the lube job routine a few thousand back. Unit sounds torn up inside. Made mistake of going thru car wash with antenna up. Which bent it at a 90, unbending it put a major kink in the bottom segment. So it is pretty much toast : (
  4. The power antenna on my 96 Subaru Legacy wagon no longer works. There is a guy on Ebay, http://www.antennax.com, selling Harada power antenna for $24.95 that he claims will fit in almost any import car. Has anyone had any experience with these or the flexible fixed euro style antennas as replacements
  5. I have a 96 Legacy 2.5GT Wagon with the twin cam, premium fuel engine. The car now has 110,000 miles on it. The last 3 years using it to commute 4 days a week 130 miles round trip. This is pretty much its only usage, freeway miles 75-80 mph in the morning with no traffic, 60-65 mph in the evening with about 10 miles of stop and go. In the winter I tend to warm the car up for 10-15 minutes on cold mornings before taking off. I’ve been running synthetic oil since break in. I’m thinking of keeping the car for 200,000 miles or more. This is my first Subaru and I have been a little disappointed in the durability to date. The power steering went out under warranty. I lost an A/C compressor just after the warranty ran out, had the the timing belt and water pump go at 70,000 miles. Now the front crank seal is leaking badly and I have seepage around the valve covers. The twin cam engine was only built in 96 and I’m wondering if that is an issue. Any opinions on the relative durability of this engine? and whether or not it is a practical cost effective goal to take the car to 200,000 or more. What is the cost of engine/transmission replacement with a new or used unit? We have two small children and money is tight these days, so I’m trying to gauge whether or not to keep the car for the long haul. Thanks!
  6. I’ve had an ongoing problem with the headlights on my 96 Legacy wagon that I would like some opinions on. In the summer of 2002 one of the OEM bulbs (the RH I think) started to dim and go bad. Since I have a long commute entirely in the dark in the wintertime. I decided to replace them with Polarg B1 Miracle White Halogen bulbs, which have the same voltage as the OEM bulbs. These worked fine for a few months until I noticed dimming happening again. Thinking the connector might be loose I pushed it back in and that cured the problem for a while. I had to do this several times. However after about a year both bulbs lost low beam and one lost high beam. I began to suspect some other kind of problem. On inspection both bulbs appeared to be fine (I did not electrically test them). I did replace blown fuse at one point, but that did not seem to affect the problem. After talking to the bulb distributor about melting and cracking on the Fujikura DC-L8PB-3FL connectors I purchased an aftermarket heavy duty wiring harness. This has not cured the problem either. I checked the Fujikura DC-L8PB-3FL connector with a meter and I’m getting 12 volts. A friend tested the Polarg B1 bulb that had gone completely bad and told me that the meter showed a bad bulb even through it appeared fine. I now have a Polarg B1 and OEM bulb in the headlights. They work O.K. on high beam, but don’t appear to be working full strength on low beam. I’m wondering if I have a short or some other electrical problem that is killing the bulbs. Any thoughts?
