  1. It's SPFI and I'm almost positive that the timing is set correctly. I'll triple check it to make sure that that's the case. As for the stumble/hesitation, it's fine when it's cold (1st started) and fine when it's warmed up fully. It's the middle ground that is off. It's not like it sputters and lurches around, but it's more like when I push the gas pedal down, nothing happens. It's like the motor goes back to idle for a few seconds before beginning to rev up/accelerate.
  2. So the general concensus is that it's the combination motor/3at? Is there anything specific that I should be looking at on these cars to at least make them run as well as possible and get the most out of it? The hesitation is what bothers me the most. I just know that it isn't right. It feel a little like it's suffocating but I've gone through the air hoses and none seem to be blocked. Thanks for the responses.
  3. I currently have a 1989 GL Touring Wagon 3at with 70k on it that seems to be REAL slow. I know that the GLs (non turbo) weren't exactly speed demons, but this seems like there's something wrong. I definately pulls better as it revs a bit, but from a stand still, it almost seems to sputter (it doesn't, but it almost seems to if that makes any sense). I've done a complete tune up (plugs, cap, wires, coil, air filter, fuel filter, timing etc) but it does not seem to do much. As I don't know anyone personally who own a Subaru (at least not an older one) I can't compare with them. Does this sound normal or is there something that I'm missing here? For the most part it runs real well. It starts right up in the morning, never stalls, doesn't use any oil, doesn't overheat. All in all, it runs O.K., but I do get a hesitation when I'm excellerating (especially from a stand still) while the engine is warming up. By this I mean that it hesitates during the time after the initial higher revs (like a choke would do) and before it gets to normal operating temperature. Could this be related? What should I look at? Thanks all.
  4. Not sure if you know the secret to this or not, but I had been down this rooute many, many times. Adjusted the door, adjusted the window, readjusted the door etc, etc. Never could get it to stop blowing in my ear. Normally not such a bad thing, but not from my Sube.
  5. Looks like I have a few options to keep an eye out for. I know that new aftermarket stuff is going to be better than 15-20 year old electronics, but I'm trying to find the best factory set up that I can. I'm not looking to spend a fortune, but if anyone comes across anything "interesting" in thier travels, please let me know. It would be appreciated. I'm not necessarily looking for just the Bose brand, it's just that that's the only one that I knew of. If anyone happens to see anything that's an upgrade from the stock systems, I might be interested. I'll post in the market place as well, thanks.
  6. Yeah. I know that it's easy enough to put in an after market stereo (hell, I've got one in there now) but I was hoping to go back to a factory "look" for cheap money. Plus, I don't want a CD player in there as I have my MP3 player hooked through the cassette deck with an adapter. I guess I was either looking to see if someone on the board had one that they had replaced with a CD or if someone knew if they were popular enough for me to continue looking at the junk yards. Prolly the easiest way to do this would be to take the regular factory system that I already have in my closet and connect it to an aftermarket amplifier. New speakers might help some too:o
  7. I remember back a few years that my brother had a Subaru GL sedan. I believe that it was mid 80's (It was the mid to late 80s body style anyway). He bought it new and had a factory fit Bose audio system installed. It included an amplifier, radio and cassette player (along with the 4 speakers of course). I remember it sounded amazing. I was young at the time, but I remember being quite impressed by the sound. As my brother is a bit of an audiophile and loves that kind of thing, I would trust that it really did sound good. Does anyone here have any information of this set up? I spoke with him recently about it and he says that it was a factory option (and really did sound great) but that he had not seen another like it. I have not known many people with Subarus (still don't know ANYONE with an older model from 80's) and have never seen the likes of it. I have been able to find several late 80's GL, DL and Loyal in JY, but have not come across it. Anyone?
  8. Hey all. I haven't posted in quite a long time, but one of the things that I had posted about in the past was the annoying air leaks that I would get when the drivers window was closed. Right by my ear. No matter what I tried, I couldn't get it to seal tight enough. I had that door apart more times than I can count and played with the adjusters for the window umpteen times. I even replaced the door seal 3 times with others found in a JY. No luck. Finally fixed it: I adjusted the window so that it was as tight as I could get it (with the seal around the door) and stuck pipe cleaners behind the rubber door seal all along my trouble spots. It makes the rubber come out just enough to seal it tight. The pipe cleaners fit well in between the seal and the door (almost like a channel made for them in there) and did the trick. At first they cause small leaks elsewhere along the seal, but I kept adjusting them and added another one and ultimately it got rid of the leak(s). I've had it up to 85mph on the highway and no wind noise. I know from asking before, that there were several others here with the same issue so I thought maybe this would help. Good luck. By the way, it's a 1989 GL touring wagon, 4wd, 3at with 70k (original) on the clock.
  9. I am very happy that I was finally able to try out the 4wd in the snow this weekend (we got around 30"). What usually happens to me is that I'll buy a good winter car and we end up having very lame (no snow) winters. Not this year! I have to say that you Subaru guys are right on the ball. I didn't realize how bad the roads were until I switched from my 89 TW to my 03 Focus. BIG difference.
  10. yeah. I was waiting for the fur to fly. I have actually owned one Honda. It was a 1979 Civic CVCC. I had it only a couple of years ago. The quintisential "old ladies car" with 40k on it. It was in great shape but it ended up costing us a forture over the year that we had it until finally the motor went. I was just making a joke. This stupid window is making me rip out what little is left of my hair.
  11. I did that and it lookes like they are about the same although the one on the passenger side looks tighter (further inset). The problem is, I can't get the drivers side any tighter. I get to a certain point and it stops. If I try and tighten it any more, the metal where the screw driver goes ends up stripping. In other words, I'm pretty sure I just need to buy a honda
  12. Thanks ShawnW. I've been playing around with the book for this adjustment for a while but find it pretty useless. You're right, it's not exactly the clearest directions. From what I can see inside my door, there are the stops that stop it (duh) on it's way up. Then, there is the adjustment for the angle (back to front) that the window rises. Within the same adjustment, is what appears to be screws that adjust the fit against that seal. I've played with these but I am only able to get it so tight. Am I missing something? For the life of me, I can't figure out how to get the top of the glass tighter against the car using the adjustment provided. It's making me nuts. That's an actual diagnosis.
  13. Hey moosens, what part of Connecticut are you in? I live over in S.E. Mass (right outside Providence) so it's not too far... Anyway, I have not been able to find a T.W. in any yards around here so I would have to go and get the rear glass new. I'm sure it's not cheap. Do you know of any differance between the T.W. and a "regular" wagon, besides the roof (and glass and smaller rack). Hopefully we'll be able to get 200k out of ours. My wife drives it and she doesn't drive much so I'm pretty sure it'll rust out before we get there... Right now, it's only got 2 small(ish) spots of surface rust. One on the hood near the winshield and a second on the gas flap. Both of these are easily replaced whole
  14. Nope. Never been in a wreck. I was thinking. Could I jamb some sort of something in behind the seal to cause it to stick out a bit more where it needs to? Like run some small rubber coated wire within the seal itself? Or, is there something I could coat the seal with in the areas that it needs it to raise up the surface a little? Something rubbery?
  15. I've tried adjusting the door and right now have it so that it is as tight as it can go. Also, when I adjust the door so that the striker plate is in the upper most spot, the glass rests on top of the outer part of the gasket and is even worse as far as noise is concerned. Unless someone knows a secret, I'm pretty sure that I've tries everything. The closest I've come to fixing it is with the adjusting screws under the plastic wrap. The only way I seem to make the windo move when I play with those is further away from the door jamb then before. Very nice. I don't seem to be able to get them tighter then I have them now no matter what I do. The channel for the screw driver is beginning to peal away. $#$#@@!#@$ cheap @!#@$##$@ metal.
