  1. As a UPS employee for 27 years now, if they use us for nationwide shipping, I suggest overboxing certain parts. I drove package cars for 23 years, now I'm inside loading them. One car I load has 4 car dealerships. You can't imagine what some of these boxes look like......You can't just take a boxed item off a shelf and slap a label on it and expect it to go through 5 sorting facilities before it makes its destination.......Like an axelshaft box dropped on its end on a concrete floor.....OUCH!!!! Speakin of axelshafts, yes we need some nice ones that will last for years
  2. Come on you East Coasters!!! This'll be my first meet and greet SOOB owners and I'm really lookin' forward to this, We need more sign-ups!!!!!!! Bag everything and take the SOOB plunge......I'm bringing some of the neighbor kids that are all in Auto Body class with my son that know of the Carlisle show and really wanna go..... DO IT!!!!!!!!!! 3. I'm still on for this!!!!!!!!! Went to my sons auto body class and they seem to think they can spruce up the Soob by the deadline.......Just need new wheel bearings and an axel shat on the driver's side before I drive it up there, and does any one have any good glue to fix my leaky heads??.......Is there gonna be any one up there that sells Soob parts??? could use a new resonator pipe fom the cat to the muffler, tired of packin the holes with muffler mender....... 4. See if you can find this at your local hardware store: It's in a yellow and red tube with a black twist off cap. It's called "Seal-All" Seals Bonds Insulates Waterproofs Weather Resistant Not affected by Gasoline or Oil It has worked for me on those annoying punctures and cracks in the folds of the boot, like the above mentioned boot over the cat........it has lasted me for as much as a month before the boot has either totally disintegrated (in the worse case), or you need to re-apply before you finally get around to replacing either the shaft or the boot.... I used it to put my door "Subaru" side strip on last year and it's still holding...pretty cheap stuff that works in an emergency, every SOOB owner should have a tube under the seat...It'll even fit in the glove box, as the tube is about 8" long.........Chongo
  5. Ok that sounds fine to me......I've got no prob w/ the camping deal, I've got a dinky one-man-er that I can use if need be, but have never minded sleeping in the back of my Soob, reminds me of the girl I bought it from...........Ha Ha
  6. I've got the original spare to my my '86 GL wagon 4wd if you want it........I keep a full size spare in the back instead of in the engine compartment. The original spare still holds air and as far as I know was never used by the original owner I bought the car from...........Let me know.........Chongo
  7. In all the years I've done Civil War Re-encating when I was unable to hook up with my own outfit (for various reasons), I always put a nice bedding down in the back of my '86 GL wagon and slept there. Did that in the filming of "Gods and Generals" and was very cozy with a good sleeping bag. Since I'll be by myself at Carlisle, I'll do that again....No prob.......My question is, are we gonna park our Soobs in one spot at the camping area, or are the cars going to be placed in a different location from the campsites??????? Any feedback on this let me know............Chongo
  8. Hey eqvance I had my '86 GL wagon (5spd 4wd) carb rebuilt by a really good shop here in Manassas VA called "Carberators Unlimited" I called them on the phone first just for an estimate and to see if they even worked on Soobies. The dude asked me what year and then what kind of carb, Hitachi or Weber, and I said I didnt know. Hitachi's are cheaper to rebuid than Webers. He told to to pop the hood and he asked me questions while I described the carb to him. That's how great these people are to take the time like this over the phone. Anyway it was dumpin fuel really bad, like when you'd get off a curved exit ramp on the highway and finally straigten out and accelerate a big cloud of blue smoke would come out the exhaust. Jeeze i thought it was something in the engine itself, but nope it was the carb for sure. The Hitachi carb rebuild cost me $330 plus $175 labor but that's because I took the whole car there, not just the carb itself. This was back in the year 2000. Very expensive but well worth it since these guys know EXACTLY what they're doing. You may want to consider just replacing the carb with a new one yourself, but let me tell you, look at all the hoses and wiring and connections and then decide. I'm glad I had it done before the carb washed out the engine..Check around your town and let me know back what you find out...........CHONGO
  9. Thanks for the tip Sir on the not so hot heat....will have to do that
  10. Trailduster, Radiator Barn sent me the same radiator like they did you, one for an automatic when my '86GL wagon 4wd is 5 speed. You'll notice its much wider that the other radiator. I never plugged the trans cooling line inlet and outlet, but you can if you want. I also noted that the fan shrouding that goes on the main fan woulnt fit anymore so I left it off. Also the engine stays nice and cool in the summer but unfortunately the heat and defrost get barely warm when its wintertime like now. I guess thats cause the radiator is larger, and there is no hot trans fuid running through it to warm it up for nice interior warmth. But still the price was well worth it I think.
  11. I'm getting a loud roaring noise on the driver's side in the front end. Both axelshafts are new. Trans is original. 164,000 miles. 4WD works fine. New wheel bearings on pass side about a year ago. Original wheel bearings on driver's side. Front end alignment is fine. When I accelerate, the car pulls to the left, if I shift to nuetral the pull goes away. When driving, if I turn the wheel just a bit to the right, the roaring noise will stop. If I occilate the steering wheel when driving you can hear the roaring noise come back and then go away. At highway speeds the car will pull to the left when driving but like I said if I take it outta gear and just coast the car has no pull at all but still get the roaring noise that can come and go as I turn the wheel. Is it my tranny? Do I need new wheel bearings on the driver's side?? Could there be a chance of missmatched axelshafts?? (everyone knows how quickly these old Subies can go through axelshafts) There is no play in the drivers side wheel when you rock it while parked. Maybe a worn spindle?? Hope someone in the USMB cn help ...............Regards, Chongo
