  1. I've gotten into the habit drilling a small hole in my t-stats when I replace them allowing a very small flow at all times. This seems to help in removing any air from the system. I do this on any car I change the t-stat on,alt.hough some cars have a jiggle valve. former SOOB owner...don't hate me:Flame:
  2. ...must come to an end. It's with some sadness that I'm parting ways with my 91 soob leg. I'ts running perfect but I been bitten by vehicular desire. I'm such a fool, please forgive me..or not:banana: But like the sukker I am I've purchased a roach car. We currently own the soob and a tearazz .So I bought an older SHO. It's not that I like the tearazz. It's been a pain in the rump roast at times but I feel it's what I deserve....consider it my penance. So I bid you all a dieu and wish you all ,years of troublefree soob driving:lol:..oops. I've done my 1 set of HGs and won;t do that again any time soon. That being said the soob is a fine and capable car. Most of all I'd like to thank everyone who's read and helped in my few threads, also a ton of kudos to the mods here. This site is a pleasure to particpate in ( unlike the corvetteforum...RIP)
  3. Call me anal... the rest of the block is clean...the seals at the axles are clean..it's all clean except that one place by the pcv hose.Does accumulation of oil indicate a problem?
  4. Hello Soobites. I have a 1991 Legacy 2wd auto. While prodding under the hood I noticed an accumulation of oil film near where the hose from the PCV valve enters the crankcase. I wonder if this is due to a faulty PCV valve. Should the PCV be drawing any vacuum at idle? I figure if the valve or hose is blocked it could cause oil vapors to to accumate and slowly seep out the hose connection at the block. If I remove the PCV hose at the intake I do notice a fair bit of vacuum at idle. Is it possible to clean this valve? I hate the local soob dealer:mad: and have sworn to never have anything to do with them and they're the only dealer in town. I really like this little car and it's in fantastic shape. The only real annoyance is th erattle from the heat shields. Those puppies are going !
  5. I like the idea of filling the rad from the upper rad hose. That should fill the block with coolant. I've used this method on US cars since the t-stat housing is usually easy to remove and I'd fill the block that way. Another thing I do is to drill a small hole in the stat to allow water and air to flow a tiny bit even if the t-stat is cold. I've done my ford NUMEROUS times due to a couple bad rads, a heater core and a t-stat. I could almost do it in my sleep.I do leave the heater on full since you can feel the air heat up as the coolant heats up. I've also done the rad in my soobie with no problems. I watch for the burp and squeezed the upper rad hose while filling the rad. I am suspicious of the soobie temp guage since it never moves once it's fully warmed up. Whereas the temp gauge on my ford moves up/down with load.
  6. I'm not sure on the Impreza but I put driving lights on my Legacy by moving the lower front turn signals to the marker lights next to the headlights. These lights normally just stay on,by adapting the housings to accept an aftermarket connector for dual filament lights. This allowed me to place the the driving lights in front of the mounts for the original turn signals below the bumper. As chance would have it there was a bolt I could remove to mount the new driving lights. Although they work quite well , especially considering that the headlights are so wimpy, I'd still prefer driving lights to be mounted high, above the bumper. I may make that change by adding another set of larger driving lights. The ones below the bumper are the compact type.It looks like I could extend a mounting braket from behind the lower edge for the grill.
  7. Thank you all for replying..the search commences! BTW ..alloyguide..great link!
  8. Hello crowd, I have a 1991 Soobie legacy 2wd. Off & on I've been keeping an eye out for a set of mag wheels but there's not much selection in 14" 5-bolt wheels. Can I use an adapter to convert 5-bolt to 4-bolt and is this advisable? Also, where would be a good place to look online for such an item? TIA
  9. Check the lower rad hose.If it's old it could be collapsing and restricting flow.Possibly at about 3K rpm the flow may be overcoming the restriction. Also, I beleive it's possible to install the t-stat backwards. Use an OEM t-stat they have a nice jiggle valve to help burp the system at least in my 91.
  10. LOL..I saw that video earlier on the news. I was amazed at how many of those vehivles seemed to be SUVs...totally out of control. 1 fella going straight almost made it but it looked like he panicked and hit the brakes...bad plan. Once the front wheels lock you lose all control. A combination of too much speed and too little experience. I think I could do better in my 2whd soob. It has 4 snowies on and does very well as long as the bumoper isn;t pushing too much snow or going over a pile of snow left by a snow plough.
  11. ...and I'm a 50+ year old fart and I did this also. It took me barely an hour to do 2 locks. The explanation made me go HUH!? but after I took the door handle unit out the lite went on. I have 4 perfectly working auto-lock now!.
  12. I blew the headgasket(s) on mine early this year. The car was in fine shape so I had the HGs replaced( yes both ) for $1600 Can. It had about 200K on it but I felt it was worth it. It's run 100% since then and I do not regret having done itand it burns NO oil..woot and I drove it with no coolant for about 20 miles (my bad). I stopped after I could smell the motor overheating...oopsie It depends on how much the car is worth , the overall condition, the mileage and if you still enjoy driving it.I expect to see my odo go to 300K at least !
  13. Both cars are automatics. That should make for an easier swap. The previous reply suggested I swap the rear running gear and add on the extension housing to my good tranny in the non AWD car. I think my real concern is that the non AWD tranny can be used with AWD assuming I can transfer the extension housing from the non working AWD tranny.
  14. Hello Sube board!! I have a 1991 Sube Legacy sedan 2 whl drive. I recently had the head gaskets re-done after blowing one for no reason that I know of !! Anyway .. I had both heads done ( $1600 ..OUCH!) but I bought it cheap so I'm still upside right on it. I really do like this car but it's only a 2 whl drive. I found a 1991 Sube AWD with a blown trans and wanted to know how bad(expnsive it is to swap my good 2 whl drive tranny into the AWD car with the bad tranny.I'm assuming the gearing is all the same and the ECU is unchanged. I can get a 1991 AWD with the blown tranny for under $400 but it's in nice shape. The other thing I could do is get it and do the rebuild on the tranny. The Sube with the blown tranny has a new engine but has been sitting for 8 months.I could also try to get a tranny from a wrecker and use that. I'm open to suggestions.I'm fairly new to Subes but am so far impressed ..not withstanding the blown head gasket..kaka happens. T I A
  15. You may already know this but replace the lower rad hose along with the rad. It's cheap insurance and easy to replace with the rad.The rad job is about 2-3 hours and quite simple. Good luck on the timing belt.
