  1. 4WD button on my shifter is finally breaking, well i thought this was going to be a plug and play easy thing with 2 wires and a switch but apparently it has 3 wires for some reason and i don't want to play the guessing game and fry something. but apparently i need a relay of sorts and something being single pole double throw on/on switch, i don't understand, could someone explain it to me in detail? theres a white, yellow, and red wire, i dont understand why i need a relay if the 4WD button doesn't have a relay. i was reading this thread= http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/150571-random-4wd-engage/?hl=button im confused, is the 4WD button 2 buttons in 1? thats all i could come up with myself. do i actually need a relay? -thanks
  2. Hi I'm looking for a recommendation for a mechanic in the southern California, greater Los Angeles area. I have a 94 Subaru Loyale that is in pretty good shape (a little issue with the check engine light), except for the 4wd. When placed into 4wd (manual transmission), the rear wheels lock up. Yelp recommended Raffi Motors, but they didn't think they could help. The dealership won't even touch it, says 'they don't the books' for it. ' I searched the forum but didn't find any relevant threads, if there is one already, please point me to it, otherwise, any suggestions? Thanks
  3. I have a project i've been working on, it's a gl-10 with a 2.2 swap, DR transmission, and some other goodies.. my issues are Defrost won't blow hot and, and there is cold air coming through the heater vents, when either on or off. Vacuum? Heater core? basically i get no hot air.. even more odd.. the previous owner installed a DR tranny in it.. well, when its in FWD its actually in 4hi, 4lo works normal, but when i spoob into 4hi, car goes into neutral, even if it is IN GEAR.. that may sound confusing.. its because it is. i can be in any gear 1-R, and if i put car in 4hi, it goes to neutral.. but when shifter is in fwd.. its in 4hi. thoughts?
  4. So i have an 84 GL wagon, just finished the 5speed swap. The 4wd is stuck in 4hi. not with the shift linkage or with pry-bars am i able to move it to 4low or 2wd. I'm supposed to make a few hundred mile drive tonight and I don't suspect id be doing very well on the "new" 5speed stuck in 4wd. Any clues, hints, advice would be greatly appreciated
  5. I have a 1991 loyale wagon 4wd ea82. I have been browsing this forum for a while and it has helped me troubleshoot and fix many issues on my wagon. Just when I think I have the ol girl in tip top shape this happens. After I use the push button 4wd and park/ get out of the car there is noticeable smoke coming out of the engine bay. It looks like there is some fluid dripping onto the exhaust. It does not smoke in fwd. why would it only smoke after 4wd? This is the first time I have not been able to find an answer in previous posts. Thank you in advance for your help.

  7. Okay, I'll have to add pictures soon, but, I just completed the conversion to make my FWD DL become 4WD. If there's any interest in this, I'll post up pictures and a description/ instructions for the build and the best methods of afroengineering it all together. Until then, I'm going to take a shower and if anyone cares I will post up the build. I've attached a photo of the car which received the work.
  8. In March 2012 I hopped on a train to AZ within an hour of finding on craigsL a 1986 gl wagon on demand 4WD with only 141,568 miles on it! Her color was White and she was Pristine inside and out! Cold AC, alunimun alloy wheels, tires had 3,000 miles on them! For $2000.oo! I drove her the 400 miles home with no problems and she spead right up the hills! Her 5sp was great! Since then I had a new clutch put in and my stepson put in a new water pump and timming belts! I just love Subie's! Thanks for reading and hope to read others experience too!
  9. G'day all, I've been lucky enough to get out bush again for a few hours this time after our commemoration of the sacrafices our armed force's personnel make to allow us to do and have what we have today. This occurs every year on the 25th of April - ANZAC day. I started with the dawn service at Mt Macedon with my brother - we camped out to avoid the new bus system. It was once again a good and moving ceremony. Then at 12pm I met up with Subaruby (silver foz) and Deadman (white foz). Subaruby was in a stock foz, Deadman's foz is a stock 2L drivetrain and wheel combination with a 2 inch strut lift, custom front bar with winch. My L series - Ruby Scoo - has EJ22, 4.11 ratio diffs with front LSD and centre locking awd L box, 3 inch lift and 27 inch tyres. Here are the pics, enjoy - feel free to make up your own captions. It was an awesome day out! Tracks hit up: Pole Tk, Camp Tk, Soil Pit Tk. From here Subaruby departed. Then Reily's fire break tk, some random fire track, Croziers loop tk, another random track or two before popping out on Mooney's Lane to end the day's session. Thanks to Subaruby and Deadman for coming for the day. Apologies for not having done a reccie before the day as the tracks had severely changed since I was last in the area! 10. We've had our 1991 Loyale Wagon (4WD) for a few years now and we've gone through about 4 sets of front axles, the last pair lasting about a month! We've been buying after market parts from O-Reillys and Napa, and from what we've read it's probably just cheap parts. I looked on Subaru's website and they've discontinued the front axles for this year. Another forum said the remanufactured ones from Subaru aren't worth the money, that the best soulution is the original axle. We're thinking about going to Pick-N-Pull to grab a used axle, but our specific model and year is hard to find. Has anyone been able to find either a reliable new part that works or used an axle from another year that fits? We also heard that you can put the Brat axles in these if you lift it, but we don't need to replace the back axle and would rather not put the time into lifting.
  11. Hi Guys I am pleased to inform you that i finally bought my first very own 1998 2.0 GL non turbo Subaru Impreza 5 Door station wagon. It might not mean much to many of you, but for me it is, especially when you are limited with cash and you manage to buy your first Subaru cash. so here is the thing, and i need some advise from the Subby experts. I pick up a bearing sound like noise coming from the tranny, as soon as my clutch is engaged its gone. when i drive in 1st, 2nd 3rd its loud and gets softer in 4th and 5th gear. as soon as i de-accelarate the noise is gone, when i accelarate the noise is back. my concern................its gradually getting louder. Today......... i discovered that the noise is substantially softer when i engage the car in 4WD LO and when the 4WD lever is between HI and LO (neutral) the noise is gone. a Mech told me {Bro you gorra replace you Tranny, she is busted} im hoping he is wrong,,,,,,any beneficial advise you can enrich me with. by the way....i still love this car,,,im amazed with the way this car corners although i dont have the best of tyres. cioa.

And has anybody done this? how much lower are they than the 4WD struts? and can i use the stock 4WD springs? thanks guys!
  13. so, as my topic says, im going to be modding my brat into a little rally beast. Im already looking for needed replacement parts such as hood, fenders, grill, rear bumper, etc. mostly cosmetic. but im still planning out the major modifications. One of the first things on the long list of modifications and repairs needed is an engine (well..actually an entire drive system, but engine being the focal point) for the much needed increase in power. im thinking the system from a late 90's impreza; ej25 motor, manual transmission, awd. actually, let me take a step back and just lay out the basic overall idea for the project. basically i want an every day driver that i can also go play in the sand with . cosmetically i want it to look like a factory soup up. very simple black body with white accents. mechanics is a who different story. im going to be building it for aggressive offroad use, so a small lift and slightly larger tires is in order. and an engine with much greater power; more specifically torque. any ideas on what engine or what vehicle to steal the drive system from? or any other ideas or tips? i will post pictures shortly, but considering im not in the same state as my brat at the moment, i only have pictures from earlier this year
  14. I had been watch this go on and off craigslsit for about a year and decided i wanted it plus to have a visual diagram to put my other turbo wagon back together. It started at $1500 non running and slowly went down to $600 or trade. So i asked the guy what he wanted to trade for which came down to a saxophone and a clarinet. Once that was agreed apon i went down to go pick it up and all the paper work. The orignal owner was a old lady who bought it at Gladstone Subaru she garged it all the time but she is the one who hit a post thats what happened to the bumper, hatch, and tail lights. After that she passed and it sat in the garage for 5 years until the guy i got it from bought it at a garge sale and got it running. Soon after that the digi dash shorted out and caught on fire frying the dash harness, ecm, melting the dash and other plastic parts that the guy since then replaced but it wouldn't run. It only has between 136k-138k orignal miles and all the orignal paperwork. One paper hand written says its 1 out of 4 ever sold in Oregon and 1 out of a thousand ever made. This is where i come in i have taken out the dash and am checking all the connections, putting together the right tachometer, fixing the engine harness, and fixing the body up.
  15. So i just bought a new gl wagon because i was given a price i could not refuse for a car that was worth double if not triple what i paid. The only issue i have with it is that it does not have 4wd which is a total bummer. Is there any way to convert this beast of a car to 4wd? im planning on lifting it already so the clearance shouldn't be an issue but please correct me if i'm wrong
  16. Hey whats up guys, I have a 1985 brat 4wd and im in the process of rebuilding the carburator. I thought i had a dcz 328, but when the rebuild kit arrived i realized the gaskets dont match up. I searched around but cannot find a straight up answer as to which carb i really have and which rebuild kit i need. Id rather not waste more money on kits i cant use, can anyone help me out?
  17. Hey all, I was wondering if anyone had info on removing the stock loyale shift knob. I have already gotten the pin out, but i'm not sure how to remove the 4wd button. Inside the knob is a white plastic casing. will the casing remove from the knob, or do I have to cut the knob off around it? I am going to put the button somewhere on the dash or center console, and thread on an aftermarket shift knob. words of advice/pics much appreciated. Thank you subie family!
  18. my dad and i went to the local car show in sandy which is the fly in car show at the air port. after walking around and looking at some of the cars 189?(not sure what the other number was) to cars from now we decided to walked over to where the planes were to talk to some people we know which was on the other side of the run way as the cars. i thought i saw a first gen subaru but thinking it doesn't look right since they didn't make a 2 door hatch back that early so i didn't think nothing of it and kept talking with people. after that we headed back to the cars and much to my suprize i saw this . just to explain why its not at the car show i met him in gresham to sell him a set of tail lights that had no cracks and where perfect. it has a wheel base at 72 inches and custom window arch/offset along with custom doors. under the hood is a stock motor with a weber mounted to stock transmission with a shortened drive line. the owner said he paid a guy $2500 to this chop job and the body work and it looks stock and super cool. the seats are the bottoms of the orignals and the back of the the rear seat
  19. So I just replaced my rotors and pads. Seeing as both my rotors had cracks in them making it terribly hard to stop the car. And I figured while I was at it I'd replace the black brake fluid so I let the system drain overnight and was hoping to gravity bleed in the morning. To my suprise only half of the system wants to bleed, EDIT: Front left, and rear right are dry as a bone. Front right, and rear left are full of fluid no air. So basically I tried blowing air through the "clogged" system (with a bicycle pump lol) I can see air bubbles coming up at the reservoir! so its not clogged, but no fluid comes through. Before I buy a new master cylinder I'd like to know if anyone else has had a similar problem, and maybe theres a fix? Been at it for over two hours now, I guess I'm not taking her out just yet!
  20. Hello everyone. Here's a new weird problem with our 1990 Legacy: We noticed the 4WD fuse was missing. Put one in and the car immediately stopped automatic shifting! Stays in 1st gear no matter what. Doesn't matter if car is in Manual or Auto mode, 1,2,3, or D. Pulled the fuse back out and car went right back to normal shifting. I hope this isn't a sign of a much bigger problem. Thanks in advance for any input you may have! -Andy
  21. Hello again everyone. Im having a problem with a Legacy I just bought. I bought it at an auction so I don't know any of the vehicles history. It is a 2.2 automatic with 199k miles. The problem Im having is that the FWD light was on in the dash. The fuse was in the FWD slot. I pulled the fuse and the wheels started binding. It feels like its binding in the front but that doesn't make sense to me since the fuse just disengages the rear wheels. The weird thing is that everyones description of torque bind sounds like it only binds when taking slow sharp turns. When I pull the fuse, it binds all the time. Especially going straight up hill when there is more torque. When I put the fuse in, it drives fine. Front and rear diff is full of oil and oil is very clean. Also the trans fluid is very clean. I drained a quart of trans fluid and replaced it with a Lucas no-slip additive. I haven't noticed any change. Ive had a lot of subaru's and with yall's help have been able to fix pretty much every problem Ive had. Im thinking I should replace the center diff with a used one. Does this sound like the right direction or am I having something weird going on since it's binding all the time? Thank you for any knowledge y'all can share with me.
  22. WTB: Thought I'd bump this up to a single thread. Looking for a 1978 Gen 1 4WD wagon gas tank with a sending unit. Email me directly at david.j.stancil at gmail.com. Willing to pay for shipping. I'm located in Tucson, AZ. Hoping someone on these boards might be able to help. Any info on where I might find one of these bad mamas you would find me forever in your Subaru debt.
