  1. Not sure what this is... Or its purpose... Looks like i has a filter inside. Connecter to two vacuum lines? Maybe both are fresh air? Sits just to the rear drivers side of the intake manifold and engine. Off a 1986 GL Hatchback. Probably the same for Brats. Thanks! If you look close you can see that the two hoses connect to two different switches (?) on the intake manifold.
  2. Hi again friends. I recently had my clutch changed and immediately after, I had an issue where I would put the car in 1st or reverse, try to release the clutch and it couldn't move, making the engine bog down as if the emergency brake was on or the gears were somehow bound up. However, once I press and release the clutch, the car would take off as usual. Now it continues to bind up occasionally like that (maybe once per day) but an extra press and release of the clutch frees things up. It feels like maybe 4wd becomes partially engaged (just enough to bind - if that's even possible); however I don't understand why it would start immediately after the clutch was changed and why a press of the clutch would release it. Does anyone know what the problem is? Thanks in advance. JW 86 gl 1.8 5sp dual range 4wd
  3. Hello one and all, Last week, I was sitting at a stop light minding my own when a drunk driver rear ended me and fled the scene making it a hit and run. The damage done to my vehicle, while localized almost exclusively to the rear drivers side, bent the back axle and frame to an irreparable state which has permanently disabled it and resulted in my insurance classifying the accident as a total loss. However, I was looking over the vehicle today and besides the damage done, everything else on the vehicle is absolutely sound. I had just replaced the brakes and calipers, put four new tires on it, tuned it up, and even just put and new flywheel and clutch as well as two new CV joints to boot. I was planning to make the conversion over to some of the DL features such as the 4 Headlamp setup and eventually the conversion over to the 4WD D/R setup, but lacked a few parts to complete the job. Needless to say, I'm devastated. However, let my loss be your gain! There are so many valuable and useful parts on this hatch that I know other members of the community are chomping at the bit to get their hands on because so many of the essential parts required to maintain these older generation Subies are getting more and more scarce. While I could easily just scrap the car and get $500 for it, I would feel as if I was doing a great disservice to the community at large if I didn't at least offer it up to someone who might make a better use for it. You guys have helped me in the past with so much knowledge and advice on everything having to do with this car that it's time I brought it full circle. Here are the tech specs: 1.4L EA 81 1600 Engine 4 Speed Manual transmission with FWD and rebuilt transmission Instrument cluster and assembly intact with original mileage All hoses are fairly new All Glass undamaged and intact except for chip in windshield which was professionally repaired Body is rust and damage free spare the impact damage 3 Spare black 13 inch rims for tires Several spare brake calipers for the passenger and driver's side (Just put a brand new one on that side before the wreck) Brand new alternator Several spare control arms and knobs for windshield wipers and lights If there are any details that I am leaving out I will be sure to update and let you know. If anyone has questions or comments, feel free to send me a private message. I am located on the east coast, specifically in the CSRA on the boarder of Georgia and South Carolina in Augusta. My asking price is around $700 and prices for individual parts will be on a case by case basis, but I am more than willing to hear any reasonable offer you might have and I will make whatever accommodations I can to help you if you decide to make a partial purchase of any part(s) or decide to buy the whole vehicle. It will have no title as I will have to surrender the title to my insurance company in order to receive any form of assistance or settlement for the totaling of my car. However, a bill of sale for the vehicle as scrap or salvage should suffice which I am more than willing to provide. Guys, I loved the hell out of this car. It got me through college and was reliable right up until the very end. I'm sad that I couldn't keep the tradition going for any future generations in my family, but if it can help someone out who is in a similar situation and just looking to hold their rig together, or if it can help other subie owners find the parts for a project that they have been searching far and wide to find, then by all means, please consider purchasing her. I'll leave the ad up to see what sorts of interest I get, but if a month goes by and I haven't sold her I'll start parting her out from there. Beaux. Below are reference images for the condition of the vehicle: Intact EA 81 1600 Engine Assembly: Instrument Cluster with original mileage, which is the total mileage placed on the entire engine: Passenger side interior: Passenger Side Body: Intact Rear Passenger Side Tail Light: Spare Headlamp: Damaged Rear Driver's Side: Intact front end: Some of the spare Calipers I have laying around: Two CV Axles looking to be refurbished: (I'll sell them both for $10 or throw them in for free with any substantial purchase if someone wants them) Spare Instrument Cluster and Assembly I used for parts: (Same deal as above except I'll let either of them go for $5 each)
  4. Hello - I just bought a beater 86 DL wagon with so much friable plastic it's kind of silly. I have a possible line on a parts car, but it's a 91 Loyale. Does anyone know what can be swapped right over w/o too much trouble? I've been looking at this thread on this forum, and it seems like I should be able to switch out, say, the door panels (or entire doors?) but the thread is comparing an 87 GL with the Loyale. Does everything still apply to my 86? http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/131244-dumb-question-loyale-vs-gl-wagons/ Thanks!
  5. I have an interesting sound coming from somewhere towards the right front of my 86" Brat. It's not a grinding sound, it is rhythmic and speeds up in correlation with the speed of the car. It's kind of like a "clack clack clack clack" not terribly loud, can't hear it with the radio on. Drives/runs fine. What could this be. What should I do to further diagnose? Thanks for your help! Michael
  6. Since I'm not sure where to put this, I figured here would be a good place since it'll contain useful information. Also, it's sort of like retro fitting. I'm picked up this beautiful 85/86 Digital Dash from Suberdave for next to nothing, and now that I don't have EA82, I figured it'd be a cool bar decoration. In the following posts, I'll try to outline it the best I can and/or progress pics. Enjoy!
  7. Im looking to see if anyone has any awesome ways of repairing or re-sealing the gaskets on my t tops for my 86 brat. its seems they are leaking through the latch on the outer side. one on the locking latch as well in the middle. Id assume i could probably open them up and put sealant in there. but before i do that i am looking for the best ways to do it.
  8. A few days ago, all of a sudden, I noticed a very low (400-600 rpm), shaky idling issue coupled with terrible gas mileage... Today it started stalling at every stop unless I give it gas. I believe cylinders 2 and 4 are missing, though it's hard to tell because the idle is constantly fluctuating and randomly stalling. When I get into gear the engine runs fine (still crappy MPG) and when the choke is on it runs fine. I have new Bosch spark plugs and NGK wires replaced less than 200 miles ago. New fuel filter. Cleaned the crap out of the carb. I pulled the plugs and they look normal. Wires are certainly carrying a charge. No random arcs. No visible crack in distributer cap, terminals look fine. Pretty sure there is no vacuum leak but I'm about to do a carburetor cleaner spray check. Head gaskets look fine, no coolant leak or anything. Could this be a problem with the ignition coil pack? I planned on picking up a better one anyways, hopefully tomorrow. Could this be a thermostat issue? I flushed the radiator not long ago, I'm sure the current thermostat is 166,000 miles old. PCV valve maybe? What other checks/cleaning should I do before I go on a random part-buying rampage with money I don't have?? I certainly won't be driving this thing until I figure it out. Thanks
  9. hello USMB I am mapping out the lift kit that came with my 86 brat, and its not as easy as it looked originally. However i am not deterred! the kit came with 14, 2 inch wide by 4 inch tall blocks, and 2 4 inch tall plates for the rear shocks and one 4x4 plate that i have no clue as to why its there yet. i have to replace my shocks and struts as they are almost dead, so what would you guys suggest me installing in that area. my biggest consern is what do i use the blocks on? and where do they go and am i missing anything that i would need to complete the lift? anything helps
  10. I have a 86 Subaru brat. I have three original center caps. I found a full set in better condition On a 84 gl hatch. Problem is they don't catch when I try to put them on. Is there a trick to get them to hold. I noticed the clips are a little different. The originals stick out higher then the new ones. But mine don't even stay on all that well. Does anyone have any ideas? the left side is from my brat. the right from a gl hatch http://file:///Users/admin/Downloads/image_1364517789482399.jpg
