  1. Can somebody please confirm/comment on (e.g., re-fine) my understanding of how the Subaru A/C compressor and ECU work. As a background, I'm in the middle of re-wiring a Subaru harness to work with a VW vanagon, so I'm trying to figure out exactly how the Subaru wires and Subaru components will integrate with my Vanagon A/C wire and dash controls. Here's my understanding of Subaru >> When the driver pushes the A/C ON button: 1. A signal is sent to the A/C compressor to turn ON. 2. The A/C compressor get its power from the belt system (not a wire). 3. A signal is also sent to the ECU to tell it that A/C is ON. This allows the brains to control idling differently while AC is on vs. off. The process is the opposite when the driver pushes the OFF button on the dash. So, there are two wires. One goes to the ECU One goes to the A/C compressor Is this a correct understanding of how the Subaru A/C system works, in a nutshell? So, I'm thinking I don't need to wire any pwr wires to the A/C comp. But, I do need to wire the signal wires up. Are the two wires the same gauge? Seems like a simple signal could be carried on a 18 AWG wire easy enough.
  2. I pulled my A/C out of my 92 Loyale and installed matched belts. It seems from other threads that everything should be good to go but I wanted to double check that no other mods need to be done. I am about to do a long drive and wanted to be 100% sure so sorry for the repost if the answer is out there. I also just finished doing (having) all the brakes (done) so it hasn't really been driven since pulling the A/C. That being said, I have most of the parts of an A/C system available to anyone in Vancouver, BC. The only part missing is the radiator but I'm sure it won't be hard to spot the homeless person walking around with it.
  3. Ever wonder what the plaque that says "this vehicle equipped for the installation of optional A/C" means? Driving yourself crazy looking for why your fan has no power and can't find the relay? Well here's part of it. First off, unless you have "Subaru" A/C.....you don't have a relay. Later EA81 Blower circuits are setup with a connector, that provides for the Non-a/c fan circuit, to be bypassed......and run through a new relay.......bringing power for the blower fan through a single 20 amp glass fuse taped up in the harness. I believe this leaves the original blower circuit extra electrical capacity to power the compresor clutch, fan relays and pressure switches,etc.... Here is a pic of the jumper that is in the setup from the factory on non-a/c cars. This connector is up under the dash, right below the column, coming out of the big bundle on it's own 20" or so pigtail. The glass fuse is wrapped up just a bit closer to the fuse box. I decided since the a/c system on my 89 GL had a small leak in the compressor, I would see what would happen if I charged it with R134a without removing the old oil or doing anything to the system. So I put in the refrigerant and oil that was in the kit and started using the a/c. It has never worked better since I've owened the car. The small gasket leak is still there but has slowed down alot. Only time will tell if anything bad will happen. After talking with several A/C techs, and getting several different opinions as to what should be done to convert the system and why, I decided to see for myself what would happen if I didn't convert it properly. I don't use the a/c much and don't really care if it never works again. Mark
  5. As the temperatures here in Utah have hit well over 100 degrees for the past couple days, my GL-10 has started having trouble keeping its temp down. I've been very cautious and kept a close eye on the temp gauge on the dash to make sure it doesn't overheat. I've found that it stays cool just fine even at highway speeds without the a/c on, but with the A/C, the temp goes up fast and I have to turn it off again to keep the car cool. Does this indicate that I need a new radiator? Is there something I can do to get it to keep cool even with the A/C or is this just how it goes with an '87? I'm gonna flush the fluid one more time and see if that helps. any recommended brands for coolant?
  6. I've picked up a longblock 3.0r minus the A/C and alternator. Does anyone know what units I can use? Does it have to be factory, and for that specific engine? or could I potentially find something cheaper (maybe older) that would do the same job? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Trying to do an oil pump swap this weekend and worried i'm gonna lose my A/C refrigerant in the process, and won't be able to find more R12...cause it's super illegal thanks to it's unenviromental friendliness. after some googling, i see most pointing to converting it w/ a kit available at auto-zone or other automotive supply stores. have also seen the a number of "eco-safe" R12 refills out there, but not sure what the deal is with them. never really had A/C in any of my cars of the years so not really willing to give up my currently working A/C, but need to eliminate my TOD w/ the oil pump swap (hopefully, fingers crossed). thoughts? thanks, Glen
  8. Apologies if this has already been answered elsewhere in the forums but I did a search and couldn't find much on maintenance of my a/c unit in my 78 Wagon GL. Everything seems to kick on when I turn the A/C knob and for a second she actually pumps out some cool air but then goes luke warm. I looked on the unit for a port to recharge it with a conventional recharge kit but can't seem to see where I would even begin to think about putting anything in. Anyone familiar with recharging a unit like this? Any help would be appreciated. PS: I understand that a few folks are vehemently anti A/C in these old Soobs but down here in Southern AZ I will take a bit of power loss for the pure necessity some days of air conditioning.
