  1. Does anybody know if the 32/36 DGEV model Carburetor from Weber Carbs is the only model that would be compatible with the EA81 engine? Also, are weber carbs recommended? What do you all think?
  2. I am looking into replacing the master cylinder for the brakes system on my 1979 brat in order to pass inspection (and feel safe enough to drive it on the road). I am located in denton, Texas and am new to the forum. All help will be greately appreciated. Thanks -FunkMonk
  3. Been working on my '84 Brat lately. A few years ago I bought a Hitachi Carb from a junkyard, but I can't remember what it came off of. Was wondering if anyone could ID it, and could maybe give some insight on if I can use it on my Brat. Excuse me if I don't know the technical names of some of the parts. The one on the left is the Hitachi out of my 1984 Subaru Brat. The one on the right is the Hitachi from the junkyard. Noticeable differences: Original carb has two metal doohickies on the rear (circled) while the junkyard carb has only one. Original carb has mechanical/electrical solenoid on the left, yellow wire. Junkyard carb has all electrical. Original carb has a hose attached on the front (circled), the junkyard carb does not have this hose attachment. Junkyard carb has a hose going from the metal doohicky on the lower rear to the top of the carb. Original carb does not have such connection. I actually installed the junkyard carb and attached all the hoses, and was left with an extra hose with no connection, due to the junkyard carb not having the hose connection on the front. Car started and idled normally and throttle worked fine, however I was worried about the extra hose so I came here to ask the pros. The hose I'm talking about his highlighted in the second picture, I took pictures of everything before I unhooked the original carb, and labelled each hose. Anyone have any info on the mystery carb and if I can use it? Thanks in advance. Can get more pictures if needed.
  4. How accessible are the Thermostat and the temperature sensor in the EA81 engine? Would they be really easy to replace, or would you have to take a bunch of stuff apart?
  5. I need help removing this trim for paint touch up. Are there clips, or is it just glued down? What is the best method to remove and reinstall? It is a 1980 Brat. Thanks for any help!!
  6. Just showing off my BRAT's. They're not usually all together, but today they are, in a moment of rareness. Two 1986's and a beautifully restored1979 (and an SVX which is hidden in this picture). I may be willing to trade something for a 360 or a Sambar. ;-)
  7. We recently traded a high mileage 95 impreza for this relatively low mile 82 Brat
  8. I know it's been asked before, and I've read the responses, but I'm still at a loss. My 83 Brat has an intermittent problem of stumbling upon acceleration. It occurs whether the car is warm or cold. It seems to stumble only with slow acceleration and if I step on it, it surges and opens up, feels smooth. Doesn't seem to lack power overall and idles decently enough once it's warmed up. Stock Hitachi carb. So far, in attempt to fix this issue and just because it needed it, I have replaced both fuel filters, air filter, spark plug wires, spark plugs(with new NGK, properly gapped), new distributor, put a bunch of heet and seafoam through it to clean out any gunk or water and checked for vacuum leaks by spraying starting fluid around the intake manifold and vacuum hoses (no change in idle speed noted). I also only run 89 octane or higher fuel. Im thinking it could be a partially clogged jet in the carb. Maybe some other jet opens up with more throttle and thats why it only occurs at low throttle. I haven't opened up a hitachi, but I would be willing to rebuild it if that would help. And no, I'm not getting a Weber. I've gotten 31 mpg with the Hitachi properly tuned. Any advice would be appreciated. Let me know if more info is needed. Thanks yall.
  9. Hello All, I am posting in search of some help. I am currently helping a friend work on his 86 brat. Due to other issues and finding a new carb off a EA82 , we are replacing the intake and carb with that from a EA82. We removed the intake with no problem but the EGR piping that goes from the top of the block into the intake will not come unscrewed from the block. We have tried using a torch to heat it up and also penetrating spray. There also seems to be a case of 17mm being slightly big and 16mm being too small. This is the pipe we are doing with. I should note we do not particularly care about reconnecting the EGR as we also were able to get a very nicely machined block off for it from the EA82 intake. But the pipe still will pose an issue. Does anyone have a secret for taking this off or possibly going another route?
  10. hello USMB I am mapping out the lift kit that came with my 86 brat, and its not as easy as it looked originally. However i am not deterred! the kit came with 14, 2 inch wide by 4 inch tall blocks, and 2 4 inch tall plates for the rear shocks and one 4x4 plate that i have no clue as to why its there yet. i have to replace my shocks and struts as they are almost dead, so what would you guys suggest me installing in that area. my biggest consern is what do i use the blocks on? and where do they go and am i missing anything that i would need to complete the lift? anything helps
  11. i got a practically brand new carb off a 87 or 86 loyal wagon for my 86 brat with a ea81. they were almost identical except the mounting bracket.. is there an adaptor i could use? 13. I have a 86 Subaru brat. I have three original center caps. I found a full set in better condition On a 84 gl hatch. Problem is they don't catch when I try to put them on. Is there a trick to get them to hold. I noticed the clips are a little different. The originals stick out higher then the new ones. But mine don't even stay on all that well. Does anyone have any ideas? the left side is from my brat. the right from a gl hatch http://file:///Users/admin/Downloads/image_1364517789482399.jpg
  14. finally got my acount to work!! My name is Jeff and i picked up my 82 brat about a year ago. Ive wanted one for a while now and ive always wanted to build a warthog from the game halo out of one. not everyones cup of tea but it puts a smile on my face and thats all that matters. Plus it was in really rough shape when i got it so its not like im ruining a rust free one. Lastly, is this the proper place to post my progress on my build? -Jeff
  15. Hey guys! My buddy has agreed to help me do a wiring harness with my 78 BRAT. He said if I get a kit he can help me build it, but he needs to know the specs I need. Anyone know of what the most reliable kit I could get to work for this? I also plan on doing the ea81 alt/disty swap when I install the harness. I just need something simple, preferrably with labelled leads to build a new wiring harness. This will be a great learning project for me and I'll post pics and my steps so others can learn too! Thanks! Connor
