  1. I just bought a 97 obw and I know little about it but im learning as I go, so far I have replaced my trunk latching stops or whatever they are called with newer ones from a newer obw to remove the trunk rattle, had a bad squeal on startup from my starter so im replacing that, my idle has been all over the place even at walking speed and anytime i move to neutral when coasting and such I checked my mass airflow sensor and its clean as a whistle so Im assuming its the throttle control module so I ordered that and am ready to replace. another issue is my rear wiper doesnt work and when I try and turn it on a strange buzzing noise comes from my left and behind me but not all the way at the back it sounds like something in the back passenger door or something wiring related any ideas? and last but not least my clutch pedal squeaks like a hamster in heat... any permanent fix for this? thanks MrLinfoot
  2. Yikes! I stopped to fill a low tire Tuesday morning, leaving my car running due to the cold weather. After filling the tire I got back in my 1995 Impreza Wagon and as I was about to pull away i noticed a distinct smell, like burnt plastic and fire. Then I saw the white smoke around my hands and the steering wheel. Holy Crap! I parked immediately and turned the thing off! I jumped out and popped the hood just to see if any smoke was coming from underneath. Nothing. Got back in the car and could smell that very bad smell. Luckily I'm no idiot. I called AAA for a tow and my Dad for advice. Two days later and my car is sitting at the mechanics. He said he found a 'melted reistor' near the steering wheel area. He then refferred to this as an 'airbag resistor'. I did my best to search this forum and some of the other forums on this site and couldn't find anything to match up. I have not been able to go see the car now that the mechanic has the dash open. I will tomorrow and take some photos. My question is, does anyone know what this could be? If there are other threads that might help feel free to point me to them.
  3. Good Day Everyone, I recently joined this site, I have visited before and had a lot of help when working on my subaru. I own a subaru impreza TS 1.6l non turbo, automatic. Its not that fast! but it is used as a family car and it does the job. Recently however I noticed the engine was losing power - slow uphill and acceleration. So i decided a tune-up was in order. I changed the oil, oil filter, spark plugs, transmission fluid, air filter. This did NOT improve or solve the performance issue. After a while the check engine light came on. I normally work on the car myself but I do not own a diagnostic scanner so I took the car to a mechanic. The mechanic told me the O2 sensor was faulty so I had it replaced. The check engine light came off but came back on after 2 days. Replacing the O2 sensor did not solve the problem, the car still struggles to get up hills and accelerates very very slowly. A few weeks after I took the car to another mechanic, he scanned the car and told me to replace the spark plugs and wires. I did, and the problem still was not solved. Tired of the problem, I took steps to fix the problem myself, I cleaned the throttle body, had the injectors cleaned and replaced the fuel filter, the problem still was not resolved. So in a nut shell - Car engine - lazy Replaced- engine oil oil filter spark plugs spark plug wires o2 sensor air filter fuel filter transmission fluid cleaned throttle body So now i'm here, asking- please can someone help!!??
  4. Hey gang, I've been going through www.opposedforces.com for things I should pull off my parts Forester for my Impreza and I wanted to know about the steering rack. I see on OF.com that it isn't a direct replacement part between the two but I can't help but think that it would have to be close enough to use anyway because so much of the suspension, crossmembers, etc are direct swap-over parts. Has anyone done a rack swap between the two before? I have a hunch that there is some minute difference between them in ratio (for different tire size maybe?) or something that makes them not 100% identical parts but that they would still swap in and work in place of each other. Any ideas? I'm trying to farm out as many spares from this rig as I can before having it hauled for crushing. So far I've put all four struts and springs on my impreza as well as a bunch of stereo mounting dash parts and the nicer front bucket seats. I've also pulled all the axles and the front control arms to have 'in stock'. I think I'm getting pretty good mileage out of a $250 parts car.
  5. Hey everyone, so I just bought a 2000 Impreza Outback, standard, for only $500! Just needs brakes and two front struts! But I also needed a battery. After replacing the battery, I find my alarm comes on. But not the horn. Just the flashing lights, and you can hear the "click" sound as the lights flash from around the dash. I know there is supposed to be that emergency override button but I couldn't find one. Maybe removed for some reason? I don't know. But I don't have the fob for it. Anyone know how else to turn the alarm off without the fob or emergency override button? Or maybe where the button would be? I searched under the dash on the drivers side all around but couldn't locate it. Exact location perhaps? Might have been something in the way of where exactly it is. Anything could help. Thanks!
  6. I have 2002 2.5RS and there are a few problems 1. The ABS Light is on and ABS is not functional at all what could it be? 2. Check engine is on and I can't run a code because there seems to be a short somewhere. I took it to autozone and when the code reader was connected to the OBD-II slot it wouldn't even power the reader. There are 2 exposed wires under my dash next to the green test plug. Maybe that is the issue but I can't find where they go. The Engine seems to run really smooth no knocks or anything. I suspect it is a fault with the gas cap. Please HELP!!! Thanks!
  7. I'm a teenager who recently bough a '98 Impreza L with 262xxx miles after getting rear-ended and totaling my '97 Camry. I'm just looking for tips and advice from wiser and more experienced Subaru owners. Anything from a new air intake to a different muffler tip or new exhaust all together. It's a low powered engine and I want to have the kick my old turbo charged Camry had again. I've already replaced my radio and done some cosmetic work. Any input would be great. I just need help dudes.
  8. Hello, I just joined this message board. I am having "problems" with shifting from first to second in my car. I suspect is could be solenoid, a sensor or a tired tranny. Here's some info. All of the car minus the engine has 250k on it. The engine is only at 130k. I come out of first gear with high revs between 4-5k at 30-40mph and it feels rough, forward to back rocking and then proceeds to run business as usual from second to third. It doesn't at all feel natural between the action of the shift and how delayed it is. I know something is wrong but trannys are not my forte so I can't quite put my finger on it. I hope for this to be a cheaper fix than replacing the tranny. Thanks for any help!
  9. I have a 97 Impreza L, the 2.2 (SOHC) , and I'm half way through the timing belt change and this is the first time I've attempted a repair like this. I've been using this guide as my main guide for the whole project: http://www.rs25.com/forums/f105/t154453-diy-sohc-timing-belt-change-w-pics.html. I've also pulled information from other various forums (here) and have the service manual downloaded. I've run into the problem when aligning the passenger side camshaft to put the new belt on. I have the crank cam and the drivers side cam in the proper position. I was using a torque wrench to rotate the cams. When I started (slowly) rotating the passenger side cam, I got about a quarter of the way around fighting compression, and once I moved past the resistance it spun all the way around by itself because of the ratcheting effect on the torque wrench and settled pretty close to where I wanted it to be for the timing marks. The cam pulley has a little bit of play, I can rotate it about an inch left or right with no resistance and I can even line up the timing marks and put the belt where it needs to be. I didn't notice this play before, but I don't really remember checking. The pulley also seems to wiggle a little where as my driver side pulley does not. My concern is the play in the passenger side camshaft pulley. I'm afraid there may be other problems that I don't have the knowledge to see. When I was trying to rotate it and it took over and spun all the way around it was unnerving because of the sudden loud ratchet sound from my torque wrench. It wasn't something I was expecting or had seen anyone mention. Can I just align everything and start putting it all back together? Is that how a camshaft is supposed to rotate?
  10. I'm buying a stock 1994 Impreza L 1.8 from someone I know, and I was wondering is it at all possible to put/install a turbo into the car? Does anyone or can anyone answer this.
  11. Hey USMB! I just bought my first Subaru, and officially my first car with my own money! I previously drove a 97 Honda Accord Coupe which was shared with my dad and after that a 97 Lexus ES300 that I shared with the girlfriend. The ES started out as her car 5 years ago but recently got into a small accident and got totaled with 207k on the clock, which led to finding and buying this lovely Red wagon. It's a 2000 Impreza Outback Sport with stock everything except head unit, which was installed with a pry-bar it seems. I am the third owner and bought it with it's timing belt and water pump replaced but there is still an occasional squeak from one of the accessory belts. After a couple days owning the car I replaced the fluid in the Diffs with Mobil 1 75W-90 and did the first half of the tranny drain and fill, next weekend I will re-drain, change the ATF filter and re-fill with Mobil 1 ATF. I got new tires and an alignment last week and the whine from the rear diff is gone and it rides and shifts smooth. I hope to learn as much as I can from maintaining and gently modding this car, the most work I've ever done to a car previously was take apart a center console or replace a worn half shaft on the ES 300. Still, I've found plenty of good DIYs and have been reading up the FSM to start fixing the little things. Like that belt squeak - it's only when the car is cold and only for a few seconds before it goes away. The power steering belt looks brand new and I was told it was changed, tension looks good. The AC belt is maybe a little looser but does not feel loose by my approximation but the belt does not look as new, although it doesn't look worn, I'll grab a tensioner for a few dollars and check and adjust Otherwise, I'm looking for a retractable cargo cover and hopefully free up a bit of money for something other than steelies -Sam
  12. I have a recently bought 2006 Subaru Impreza and today it started leaking a thick green slime like fluid around the CV boot. Also, it is a manual and when the clutch is disengaged there is a screeching metal grinding sound that just started since I noticed the leak.
  13. I am trying to purchase new front struts for my 2004 Impreza 15I hatchback, 4WD 1500cc. This is a Japanese model and I'm trying to figure which struts from the U.S. would fit this model? I think it may be the TS but can someone confirm?
  14. bought a write off 96 model .. suby with a working ej20 Na engine from and 5spd manual transmission and awd drivetrain ... and I already have a 94 gx impreza with an ej18 5spd fwd with a blown water pump and a really bad knock in the block from overheating due to blown water pump.... given that i paid $90au for the entire wreck i figure i might as well do the swap to the 2 litre...instead of a rebuild(to fix the knock which is most likely rod end bearings) .. so would swapping the engine be fairly straight forward?
  15. OK, here goes. Have a bad driver side front diff oil seal. Doing the CVs while I'm at it. Background- had a center diff bearing fail (shatter) 20K ago, split the tranny, found the bearing fragments and replaced no problem (also found some other old fragments of hardened metal from something else which failed and was repaired prior to my owning it). Kept the old seals and slid the halves back over the diff seals. Did not reset the backlash with the differential side retainers when it went back together (pops reassembled while I was at work, he couldn't help himself). Must I pull the trans to do this job like the manual calls out, or can I simply pull the side retainer, swap the seal & O-ring and reinstall the side retainer to the same exact point (indexing its original position/turns)? If I must pull the trans its all good, have all the necessary tools/equipment.
  16. Does anyone knows if a unisia jecs ecu of the 2005 impreza ts model 1.6l (N/A, with cable throttle) can be reprogrammed with ecutek tools or if is it reprogrammable at all? Because my tuner told me its possible but everybody else says the opposite..... this is a pic of the ecu chip
  17. Hey guys, I am thinking about taking on an EJ22 to EJ20T heart transplant for my 99 OBS, had a few questions: MY OBS has the 5 speed MT 1) what years of WRX with EJ20T should I look for? 2) What all components do I need to take from other car: brakes, ECM, harness, exhaust, etc (not looking to change dash)? 3) what should I absolutely avoid in the process? (tips/tricks) 4) Should I keep my "glas trans" or should I grab the WRX tranny and rear end to match the gears too? Thanks everyone. this is a killer forum. Cheers.
  18. Have my 99 OBS with EJ22, 120K on engine, 173k on chassis, Weapon R Dragon Short ram Intake (no CEL over rides needed) new timing belt, plugs & Wires. I've owned it since 140K and done some restorative maintenance on the powertrain (tranny bearing, center diff, CVs, U-joints, back to stock exhaust setup) When moderately accelerating in any gear from low RPM to high RPM ( 1200- 3200) it hesitates/hiccups until 3200/3400 when it cleans up and picks up steam solidly. Damn near like hitting a powerband on your 2stroke dirtbike! like when a boggy turbo finally overcomes lag and boost kicks in (mind you this thing is not turboed!). ALso it is critical to note I am not changing the throttle position during acceleration, just depressing the pedal to mid throttle and waiting for it to tach up so it will stop hiccuping and get my butt down the road. No DTCs according to the Innova, timing is on according to spec. If I drive miss daisy it will accelerate smoothly up through the tach range. Hypotheses so far: 1) clogged fuel filter 2) fuel pump working on taking a crap 3) clogged injectors 4) gremlins, drunken gremlins
  19. Hi All, As you can see, this is my first post here. I just purchased my second Subaru, a green/ gold '99 OBS 5-speed with 219,500 miles on the clock now. In my first 1,000 miles, I am really enjoying the car and have had no problems yet. I put on a new set of tires, replaced a ball joint which had a rip in the boot, and adjusted the clutch pedal reach/ free play, which seems to have greatly improved a synchro problem downshifting into second. My Suby was salvaged after being totalled out by a minor front-end wreck (have all documentation, it wasn't bad at all). The exterior is a bit rough, some dents and faded clearcoat, but I don't care as long as I keep the rust away. The engine is clean, no drips from the cases, and the tech who replaced the ball joint and tires told me it looked to be in good shape overall. My question for other Impreza/ OBS owners of this generation, is what would you reccomend in terms of preventative maintenance other than oil changes, etc.? The car had one owner for most of its life, the owner who wrecked it had it for only a few K miles, and it looks like scheduled maintenance was performed. I would really love to put another 100,000 miles on this little car, I am already in love. Thanks in advance!
  20. Hi, I recently remapped my 2005 ts turbo and added a larger air intake, I noticed that pressure was the default 0.2 bar. The performance is noticeably better so i,m sure that the tuner didn't fool me. The reason of my post is that I tried to raise pressure to 0.6-0.7 bar but fuel cutter hits at 0.5 bar. I took it back and he explained how the MAP sensor works and ecu cuts fuel (mine is a Hitachi PS60-01 boost sensor). he plugged a pda to the OBD and messed with the values(dont know exactly what he did) and told me to test again. I did, with same results. Next thing he did was to connect a zener diode (4.7 v) -see attached pic--- to fool the sensor but failed again. I tried myself with 4.3 ,3.9 even with 3.6 and car couldnt accelerate so I stopped. Nothing can raise the limit of the cutter and it seems that something else intervenes. {There is a temp sensor after the air intake filter, connected to the boost sensor but dont know if has anything to do with it.} Does anybody knows what is going on, a solution maybe? PS. I just need to go only 0.1-0.2 bar over the fuel cut limit, not anything extreme.
  21. So I just got this 1996 subaru impreza, and I can't get it to start. It runs on starter fluid fine and we aren't getting any sort of fuel out of the fuel line. I pulled the fuel pump tonight and I was curious if I could bench test it somehow? It looks pretty bad it is covered in rust but it might still be good. Also if anybody knows any weak points in the fuel system that would warrant looking at I would appreciate it. I am fairly new to this and so I am trying to learn as I go. (note: if there is any way of checking the relays wthout having to pull them out of the car or maybe the easiest way to pull one out.)
  22. http://www.performancechipsdirect.com/ Does anyone one have any experience with this chip^^^^ or ever heard anything about them? Or does anyone know of a good tuner chip for my 1998 Impreza?
  23. Hi, I recently totaled my 2001 Impreza Outback Sport. Before accident it would have been "Very Good" by KBB description. Both interior and exterior had only minor wear that could only be seen up close. Never had any major mechanical issues, tires were new about 14,000 miles ago. I took it in for regular maintenance every 3000. Brakes were still at 60-70%. It was all stock, no additions, nothing missing, orig cassette deck/radio, orig mats, cargo cover and liner, spare tire, jack, etc. It has 142,000 miles on it now. The accident: spun out on some ice and front of car hit cement barrier. Front bumper, one headlight, and passenger fender are the only visual things that got hit, but there is probably interior damage. Insurance declares it a total loss. Auto shop estimate to fix was $2400. Insurance repair estimate was $3600, they valued the car at $4500. Car starts and runs like nothing happened, but the front tires are rubbing against something when you turn the wheel. I don't want to drive an uninsured salvage or rebuilt title car, so I'm going to take the partial payment from insurance and sell the totaled (unrepaired) car to a private party or mechanic, etc. Any ideas on how much I should expect or try to get for this? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks for reading!!
  24. Has anyone on hear done any work with the Subaru key less entry systems? I bought a 98' Impreza awhile back and it came with a key fob, but didn't work.. put a new battery in the key fob still nothing, looked under the dash to make sure everything was hooked up, all checked out okay... Never messed around with any of these but would like to get it working again, so if anyone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it!....another thing my 01 legacy had the same thing and when I locked the doors manually and shut it it would do the "beep" sound, My Impreza does not though...Don't know if that helps any....and It is a Subaru OEM dealer installed key less entry system
  25. Hi guys, I'm new here so forgive me if I screw anything up. I'm looking at purchasing a TSUDO n1 Catback exhaust for my 2004 Subaru Impreza 2.0 GX. The site I'm looking at says that the exhaust is designed for 1998-2005 RS Imprezas. I'm wondering whether this exhaust would fit on my GX. Thanks. I've uploaded a pic of what I'm getting here: http://imgur.com/Zt87i3O Also, if it makes a difference, I'm in Australia and this exhaust is coming from the US... sorry I'm just currently in the learning process at the moment
