  1. Attached picture... I'm one short of a set 2003 Baja Where can I find these? Thanks Erik
  2. I have a 2003 subaru baja (automatic) and have recently been experiencing what I believe to be a transmission problem. When in idle the car vibrates more than when in park or neutral. Also, when I come to a complete stop after driving for a bit the car has problems accelerating. It will stutter in between gears. I alleviate this issue by letting off the gas then trying to accelerate again. When this happens there isnt any distinct noise, the only thing that happens is the car shakes. Any guess on what I might be experiencing?
  3. Will an EA gearbox swap into a vehicle made with an EJ? I'm interested in the split gearing. Vehicle is a 2003 Baja with 2.5. Currently running a 5 speed out of a 2003 WRX.
  4. Greetings all! I purchased my first Subaru--a 2003 Baja with an Automatic and 300k. The body is great, interior is beautiful, but the timing belt busted, and I'm in need of a new engine. I've scanned the stickies and tons of threads. While I've got an idea of what not to do for a swap, and a good start on how to how to replace just about any part--for the record some of the how to's on here are dynamite, I'm looking for what drops in, no question. I found one list, on.....Wikipedia. Forgive me. Impreza 2.5RS, 2.5TS 00-02 (US) Impreza Outback Sport 00-02, 04 (US) Forester 99-02 (US) Legacy 00-02 (US) Outback 00-04 (US) Baja 03-05 (US) I've read that it must be SOHC so maybe not from a 99 forester. If there's a Subaru vet out there willing to school me on whether or not that is a list I can depend on when shopping, I'm ready to take notes and provide any details one may need. Fire away. Please and thank you.
  5. I drive a 2005 Baja Sport, with belts for two in the rear seat and a center console. As I drive for a rideshare company, I would like to be able to accommodate 4 passengers and have belts for 4. So I am wondering if any other model/year rear seat would be compatible with my Baja configuration, but give me a center rear seat with a belt instead of the center console. Any help would be appreciated.
  6. Hello Everyone I have owned my Baja for 2 years now with no significant problems. I have kept it well maintained, changing everything needed. As of late it started smoking from the exhaust and under the hood beneath the turbo where I think the manifold is...I took it to my mechanic ( whom I trust ). He told me that A. he thought it was the turbo going, and B. it needed a valve cover gasket. He said he wanted me to get a 2 nd opinion because the turbo is a big job. So I took it to another place where they have a Subaru mechanic and he said that he saw no indication of turbo issues. I then took it back to my mechanic. He changed the valve cover gasket. It still smoked. So I took it back again, and he said that there was something adjacent or behind the valve cover gasket and he fixed that. He told me to drive it for a week to see if the oil would burn off and if not bring it back... It is still smoking...maybe not as much...I am not quite sure yet. Today I took it about 45 miles and it didnt smoke until I was 1/2 mile from home. I am beside myself. NO loss of oil, always full, no idiot light...nothing... Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
  7. Hey everyone! I am brand new to this forum and actually joined in order to get some advice from more experienced owners of Bajas and Outbacks. That being said, I am no newbie to working on cars and love learning more about them, anyway, on with the questons... I inherited my '03 Baja from my dad who passed away in February, right now it is in need of heaad gaskets, well basically most of the engine seals are leaking a little, and new metal needs to be attached in the area of the drivers' side rocker panel/pinch weld below. There are other minor things; paint touch ups, some bondo from when it was rear-ended etc. BUT, I was looking into installing a turbo. I don't really know much about this specific engine, but i have heard that the oil and coolant feeds for a turbo are already there. I haven't looked into it at all and am wondering if that is true, and if not, maybe I would be better off getting a new pre-turbo'd engine. Also, is it easy enough to do a 5 speed swap? Or, maybe an H6 5 speed swap {{evil grin}}? I realize this is a big old money pit at this point, but I want to have it for at least another 10-15 yrs, I want a Subaru, and I'd rather my dad's than any other, so it's worth it to me. I'm just sort of trying to get a better picture of what is feasible, and what wouldn't really be worth it. I've got a local welding shop estimating $1200 to fix all frame issues and guarantee the whole thing for 10yrs, and I'm thinking the head gaskets will be another $1000ish, which leaves me with around $1500-$2000 to do some upgrades etc. Obviously some of the above mentioned mods wont get done for a while, but what do you think would be the best use, as far as upgrades, of my extra $2k-ish once all repairs are done? I was thinking about some high mount offroad lights, a turbo, and maybe a new audio system, the current one works intermittently. Basically getting rid of it is out of the question, and I'm going to be having some extra money to dump into it soon. Let me know what you think, any opinions are greatly appreciated. ~c4pt1n54n0
  8. Hi All, New here to USMB, have been seeking a true all purpose vehicle for my needs and thinking the Baja may fit the bill. Would be pulling it behind a 25' RV and need the ability for light hauling (bicycles or small scooter like Vespa) and still have the ability to top load a kayak or two. Hoping someone can inform me of the aspects on towing AWD vehicles, manual vs. automatic transmission (for towing purposes), turbo or not? Comfortable? They seem to be few and far between, any particular reason? Thanks so much - make your day a GREAT one!
  9. The turbo on my 06 Baja went south and basically took the entire motor with it by virtue of spreading metal particles into every orifice. I'd like to replace the toasted engine with a non-turbo 2.5 SOHC. Anybody have any experience or comments with a plan like this? Thanks.
  10. Hi there! I am brand new to the world of Subarus, and I am having trouble tracking down basic info. I am interested in the differences from the very very basic to the technical between the Baja turbo and non-turbo cars from 2005-6. I have found a few discussions about repair expenses, but want to know about power differences, gas, terrain they can handle etc. Also does anyone know if Subaru would back a special project car if it were brought to their attention? I plan to do something with it that's not been done before, and it's a niche, can't say much else right now. Thanks!
  11. I recently have been helping a friend "repair" her 2000 Legacy Outback from a recent collision with an ELK!!! Hood, smashed, and drivers headlight busted and pushed in. Fender dented in but not crumpled back into door at all. Most of the force was in the "fall" of the elk onto the hood more than the "hit" pushing in. But anyhow...... The car had previously been "repaired" from a front end collision, so the passenger side headlight was already sunk in a tad. I sourced a '03 Baja hood and headlight.....cheap...with a bit of wrinkles but should match the car well since the fenders are not perfect, and the Bumper skin is gone. (a lift and bullbar are coming soon.....so the mad max...not so perfect look is fine) After bolting it all up,...it seems the hood and headlight are 3/4 inch or so longer than they should be. It really doesn't seem like the rad support is that far off. In fact it measures out to within 1/4" of a stock undamaged reference car. But still the hood and driver headlight are noticably farther forward in front than the headlight on the other side. Does anyone no if there is a difference in these hoods headlights? did they make the front end longer a hair when they introduced the H6? And Baja didn't have an H6 so why would they be longer? Or is something still just "off" with the front support piece? Anyone?
  12. My 2003 Subaru Baja won't start up. The security light is blinking and the hazard lights start flashing. This has never happened before and I am the original owner. Only 60,000 miles and in mint condition. Please help.
  13. Hey all! My name is Dave, and I live in Mount Joy, PA. I joined this forum about a month ago, and I'm just getting around to introducing myself. About six months ago, I married into the Subaru family. My wife's daily driver for the last 10 years is her beloved 2003 Baja. She says she would like to keep it for another 10 years, so, I guess I'd better learn how to work on Subarus. She also has said that she thought it would look really cool to have a restored Brat sitting next to her Baja in the driveway. I'm inclined to agree with her, but that's a future project. I've enjoyed looking through some of the different build threads on the forum here. I'm looking forward to learning and contributing as we go.
  14. Hello! I am new to this forum and I am looking for a place for help with my Subaru and ones belonging to my friends. I have a problem now and I need help! Let me preface this by saying I am an ASE and Honda master technician but I have very little experience with Subaru's. While I'm confident I can fix this car I want to know what I am looking at. A friend of mine has a 2003 Subaru Baja with what a believe is an ej25 (correct me if i'm wrong). While driving at interstate speeds and under throttle going up a hill his timing belt snapped. Afterward he tried to start it a few times (I know a big no no). My experience with Honda's tells me that I can get away with replacing the timing belt and the valves and everything should be back to normal. What are the chances that this did more damage than just bending and breaking valves? The mechanic he had it towed too (not me because he lives a few hours away) quoted him $2500-$3000 because he said 1. the engine would have to be removed and 2. it would have to be rebuilt and the heads would have to be sent off and repaired. I did some research and found that there have been people who have removed the heads on this motor without pulling the engine. Is this a possibility or just a pipe dream? Any help would be wonderful because I want to be able to knock this out in a weekend and would like to know what the chances are that any other damage would have been done to the motor such as cracked pistons etc. Thanks for your help! V
  15. Hi All, My 2003 Baja is having some bizarre purge issues when the temps outside go above 90 degrees. The Subaru mechanics at my dealership have identified the problem, but haven't been able to fix it, so I'd like to get some ideas as to what my next steps should be About a year ago, my Baja started "bucking" in hot weather. This happened most frequently when I would get off the freeway after about 15-20 minutes of driving, or for a mile or two after filling the gas tank. I got the mechanic to take a drive with his laptop diagnostics hooked up, and he found that the A/F sensor was swinging between a rich and lean mix when the bucking was occurring, so I had them replace it. Things seemed to improve after that, but the weather had cooled down, and car was still bucking after filling the gas tank. This summer, it started doing it again, so I went for another drive with the mechanic, and this time he noticed that the purge solenoid was opening up all the way when the car was bucking. The A/F sensor was acting up again too. He thought the purge behavior was not normal, so he bypassed the solenoid by plugging the manifold inlets and unscrewing the gas cap, and had me drive it over the weekend. It drove beautifully...no chugging at all...but I noticed is that I never got a warning due to the loose gas cap, which seemed odd. I brought it back to the shop on Monday, but when I picked it up again in the afternoon, the mechanic told me he had changed the A/F sensor again, but had done nothing to the purge system. I was not too happy about this, but he said he'd test driven the car with the solenoid bypassed and could still see the A/F sensor hunting between rich and lean. He also said he talked to Subaru tech support, and they were unable to tell him what inputs controlled the purge solenoid. I found that a bit hard to believe, as I could find that information easily enough off the web. When I questioned the shop manager, he said that they had some other ideas, but they were "expensive", so they decided to replace the sensor again because it was still under warranty. Anyway, things again seemed better after the sensor replacement, and the bucking seemed to be much reduced after filling the tank. However, the weather had cooled down, so I really couldn't tell if it was a true fix. Now that the weather has gotten warmer, I definitely notice the car bucking again when coming off the freeway, so I will have to take it in for further work. If anyone has an idea of what's going on here, I'd greatly appreciate some suggestions. I love my Baja, but I've had so many expensive engine problems in this vehicle over the past 5 years, I'm at the point where I'm about ready to cut my losses and sell it if I can't get this fixed. Based on my research, I think the following components could be involved, but I don't know how to rate them in order of how likely they are to be causing it: ECU Purge solenoid Leaky vacuum hoses Charcoal canister Wiring harness All suggestions welcome and greatly appreciated! Mr. Bali Hai
  16. Hello to all, I have a 2003 Baja and would like to give it a slight no too stressful lift. Has anyone here used struts and springs from a later year or from a outback or impreza to lift their vehicle? If so, do I need to replace driveshafts too? Arms? Any help and guidance would be really appreciated. Please no flaming.....
  17. Hello to all, Guess I am supposed to say a little about me here.... Well, happily married father of two, former Army, from Maine originally and came back here because its in my blood. I am a Maine Guide and love to hunt, fish, camp, hike, boat, and all the rounds. I pretty easily put 20,000 miles a year on my daily driver and sometimes more. Have wanted a Baja for quite some time, just managed to find one for cheap in rust free condition. I mean rust free! Going to be asking some questions about lifting slightly with struts. I am new to this forum and to subarus but not to forums in general. I am not an auto mechanic but I am a trained and practicing gun smith and am mechanically inclined. I look forward to reading and interacting here.
