  1. Looking like I found a good deal on a block for my Frankenmotor build... Frankie gurus, is this a good year and mileage, etc.? link below: http://burlington.craigslist.org/pts/4269422564.html
  2. So im going to be swapping the drive system in my brat with one from an early 2000's wrx, and im currious how difficult a certain modification would be. i would like to keep the abiloity to select on the fly 2wd and awd, so it would be a slurr of a 4wd system and an awd system. is this a feasable thing to attempt?
  3. Hello! I am new to this forum and I am looking for a place for help with my Subaru and ones belonging to my friends. I have a problem now and I need help! Let me preface this by saying I am an ASE and Honda master technician but I have very little experience with Subaru's. While I'm confident I can fix this car I want to know what I am looking at. A friend of mine has a 2003 Subaru Baja with what a believe is an ej25 (correct me if i'm wrong). While driving at interstate speeds and under throttle going up a hill his timing belt snapped. Afterward he tried to start it a few times (I know a big no no). My experience with Honda's tells me that I can get away with replacing the timing belt and the valves and everything should be back to normal. What are the chances that this did more damage than just bending and breaking valves? The mechanic he had it towed too (not me because he lives a few hours away) quoted him $2500-$3000 because he said 1. the engine would have to be removed and 2. it would have to be rebuilt and the heads would have to be sent off and repaired. I did some research and found that there have been people who have removed the heads on this motor without pulling the engine. Is this a possibility or just a pipe dream? Any help would be wonderful because I want to be able to knock this out in a weekend and would like to know what the chances are that any other damage would have been done to the motor such as cracked pistons etc. Thanks for your help! V
  4. installing cyl. heads on 98 outback ej25 need torque specs and sequence for camshaft and seal caps. also timing info please. thanks!
  5. Hello All, I've heard there shouldn't be any issues with this swap but wanted to make extra sure. The EJ22 engine in my 2000 OBS is shot. (Long stupid story, let the oil get too low) I've got a 2003 Forester with an EJ251 engine that's got a pretty banged up fender and door from a hit and run. The OBS is a 5s manual, the Forester's an automatic. I've done some net searching and from what I hear, the EJ25 should have no issues swaping into the OBS. Is this correct? Thanks in advance for any and all help.
  6. Hi all, Current vehicle of question: 1999 Outback Wagon, 2.5l DOHC, 120k, Second owners... This is a friend's car that I'm helping out with, and am hoping to get some good insight. Knew that this would be the place. Story: The car was bought last October, and has had 9000 miles put on it by a very calm and defensive driver... They started noticing the thermostat indicating it getting hot. After watching it, they noticed the coolant was low, and that they needed to add. Then they noticed air being forced into the coolant reservoir. They took it to a few independent subaru shops, and got the same answer: Blown Head Gaskets, and bad Viscous Coupler (for a different post....). So we pulled the motor, and started getting the heads off. It had the old style HG (http://allwheeldriveauto.com/subaru-head-gasket-problems-explained/), and they were both bad My question has to deal with the driver side head in particular... While taking the intake camshaft retainers off, a pressurized aqueous solution squirted out at us from under the retainers. Also, two of the camshaft retainer bolts were heavily corroded. Is this a sign of a cracked head? I plan on submerging the head in a tub of water, and spraying compressed air into the retainer bolt holes. If there are bubbles from anywhere, I'm assuming the head is bad? Should we be concerned with the block internals being compromised? How much should another head cost, and should they just slap a 2.2L in there (I'm in favor...)? The oil that we drained from the pan is not chocolaty/frothy. And there was maybe a gallon of coolant that drained out of the system. Thanks, Greg
  7. I've been searching and searching but the only seemingly helpful pics have bad links. Does anyone have pics of a EJ harnes stripped for an EA car? I have a harness from a 99 impreza that was already pulled and nothing is labled, trying to sort it out. Thanks
