  1. Was unable to find any info on this, I'm sure it's been asked before. Will the 5 speed single range 4wd transmission from a 91 loyale bolt up to an Ea81 motor? I have an 85 brat and a spare EA81 out of another 85 brat, possibly purchasing a 5 speed single range 4wd transmission, just wondering if and what I would need to make this work. Picture of the brat for posterity.
  2. I have tried finding a forum that already has my answer but I have not had any luck, here is my story- Bought a 96 Outback Legacy few years back, very next day an engine rod popped and I got the engine replaced. A year later I crashed it and totaled the body but the engine was untouched. Now I have some money I am looking at buying a 99 Outback Legacy that has a knocking engine. I am looking to do an engine swap with my engine. I have about a 7th grade level when it comes to knowledge of cars so of course I am not doing this myself, but am looking for some advice. Whether these engines are even compatible, both are 2.5L H4 DOHC 16V or if this is even a good idea or worth the money. The person I am buying the car from is unaware if the car is a single or dual CAM, again any advice would be awesome! Lets bring my Subaru back from the grave! My VIN-4S3BG6854T7980786 The car I am buying VIN-4S3BG6850W7617339
  3. Hoping someone can help with this. Just did a like for like engine swap. 2008 Impreza, 2.5i SOHC, Manual transmission. I have verified that the injectors are clean, cam and crank sensors are working perfectly, checked injectors with a noid light and they are getting pulse signals just like they should, all timing components have been replaced including water pump and I have made sure the timing is set correctly. I have also seen that I'm getting an rpm signal on a live data scanner. When I crank the motor, it gets up to about 130 rpm but won't fire on it's own. The spark plugs are all gapped correctly and are getting spark, although its a yellow color less than a blue. No matter what I do, the engine will not start on it's own. I've tried both styles of crank and cam gears and have the same result from both. Someone please help me with this, I need this car to run. Thanks in advance.
  4. I have a 2001 Outback llbean edition with a bad engine. Have been having a hard time finding a used or rebuilt H6 engine. Somebody told me that there is a "kit" for swapping out the 6 cyl. engine for a 4 cyl. Is this true??? Has anyone heard of such a kit? If so where would I look for it? Thanks for your input.
  5. I have a 2002 Legacy Wagon with a bad crank bearing. Has 290k miles and had a HG at 218k. What year 2.2 engine will swap easily and any suggestions as to where to find a good 2.2 engine? Love this car and don't want to part with if possible.
  6. UPDATE: Its been a while since the swap, I added an interesting discovery about the EJ25 in a reply on the second page if anyone is interested. Hey everyone! As swap time moves nearer, I decided to move the thread from "EJ22 Build- Discussion, Suggestions, and Advice for a First-Timer" to here, in hopes to neaten things up and confirm that I'm not building some crazy turbo-frankenmotor-stroker, just a plain old EJ22E with fancy painted valve covers. Im still putting the finishing touches on the motor itself, I still need to find an intact center timing belt cover and a harmonic balancer, along with a small collection of nuts, bolts, coolant hoses, and vacuum lines. Not to mention the UEL headers... (Its a race car! ) The swap is still a week out, maybe more depending on parts. the EJ25D is starting to overheat pretty regularly now. Ill add coolant to the radiator and burp it later today, as if that'll make a difference. -EDIT- took maybe a quart, so its not leaking from anywhere, just air caveating in the water pump... So until then, Ill pester you with my questions! -In terms of registration and insurance, what should I say, if anything? I seriously doubt anyone from the DMV or USAA is going to be able to look under the hood and tell the two engines apart, or even really know what a boxer is! -Anyone know where I can find timing belt covers? every one in the junkyard is smashed, apart from a phase II EJ222, but, ya know why that wont work... I threw the original one out, and if it had a part number on it, either I'm blind or it was destroyed. -EDIT- apparently the EJ25 one will work -What sort of break-in procedures should I be aware of? I plan on running Mobile 1 synthetic (SEE EDIT), however I've heard that its best to break-in with conventional to help things seat, and change it after the first 50-100 miles. The engine hasn't run in at least a year. -EDIT- I'll just be running CONVENTIONAL OIL. My Chrysler teacher works for a local Subaru dealer (yep, he quit a dodge dealer to work for Subaru) and has told me horror stories about what happens to these engines if you use zinc-free oil, such as Mobile 1. And apparently since this is a roller motor, there really isn't a "break in" other than cooking the moisture out of it. He said the best thing I could do is start it and let it idle for about an hour, then change the oil and filter. (obviously if it starts clacking away shut 'er down and throw an oil pressure gauge on). He's also said that of all the motor pulls he's done, Subarus are the easiest. the worst part is the two studs/bolts that must be removed on the top of the engine. Surprised to see its only like 3 pages in the service info... -Coolant passages... they're all crusty. Should I be concerned and run a garden hose through there to clean them out or will they self clean when coolant starts to move? Thanks! Sorry if my questions are pretty basic and annoying, but I'm 18 and don't have many other financially viable options and need this car to get to college and work. I paid $4,000 for this car and its practically worthless as it sits, so I cant sell it for a better car 'cause no one will buy a car with bad head gaskets for $4,000.

    ca18

Anyone ever tried to fit a ca18 into a subaru brumby , brat .Probably get kicked of this site for this but just wondering a ca18 is easy worked up to 200plus kw with all wheel drive at brumby.s 900kg weight awesome . Put one into a Trump TR7 once for drifting over square wheel tracks was fun .
  8. am trying to find the best fit of sti engine to go into my 03 legacy outback. Any feedback would be much appreciated need a winter project and cant think of anything better.I live in minnesnowta so ill have plenty of time to work on it lol. Thanks for the help!!!
  9. I just bought a 1984 Subaru GL wagon and wanted to swap the engine for more power. It has an EA81 currently and I wanted to put an EJ22 into it. I'm new to engine swaps and wonder if it's worth the time and what all I will need to change to make the conversion. Any thoughts would be very helpful.
  10. Hey all, Just needed some info about the outback EJ and the liberty EJ. My liberty engine is stuffed so I got a replacement engine out of a later model outback, problem I have is there is a plug missing from the newer engine to go to the existing loom on the liberty. Its the brown plug that goes into the main loom, the outback engine hasn't got one. Can I get around this or would I have to chase another 05 liberty engine? Cheers guys
  11. Hey guys i'm relatively new to subaru's so i don't know much about them at the moment so i was wondering if you guys could enlighten me on a few details. And yes i have searched through the forums and google but i can't seem to find much info on anyone swapping from a ej20 to a phase 1 ej22. Everywhere i could find was about people swapping out a ej25 to 22. I was wondering what i would need to replace/ modify to get the ej22 into the 2000 forester(manual) I am using the ej22 as it was the engine in my last car which i still have but with a blown head gasket and 350 thousand km's (doesn't blow smoke just compression gasses going into the cooling system atm) and I want to pull the engine out of the car and replace the head gasket with a thinner one, pulley's with light weight ones, maybe a lightweight flywheel. Maybe even cams, Pistons and conrods depending if i can get the money when i start putting the engine back together By the way the ej22 is out of my 1991 FWD Liberty LX (auto) or Legacy everywhere else P.S I apologise for the somewhat disjointed post as it's quite late for me in sydney
  12. I have and 87 GL wagon, and it has this cool feature to switch IN and OUT of 4 wheel drive. and i'm planning on switching the insides with possibly a wrx set-up, but I don't want to lose that Drivetrain feature. Can anyone give me some info on ANY car that has that feature?
  13. just looking for some food for thought, im wanting to do a engine/ 5 speed tranny swap into my 1996 legacy L with a EJ22, what would be the best engine to swap in that can be turboed? ive read a couple posts on here saying the EJ25 is the best option to swap in, but just thought i would ask again. Thanks.
  14. Hi there guys, Pretty new to Subaru's and recently had a head gasket go on my ej22 in my 97 impreza OBS, priced parts and was about to order them when I found a guy in my town selling a ej22 for cheap and it runs minty, my only concern is that it's out of a 95 legacy and I know that the 95 ej22 and the 97 ej22 have slightly different internals and the compression is higher. So my question is would the ej22 out of the legacy swap right into my impreza or would i need to play with the harnesses or swap any parts over? Cheers guys and gals. Also not sure if this is the right board to post this if not could someone please direct me to the correct one, Thanks
  15. Hello All, I've heard there shouldn't be any issues with this swap but wanted to make extra sure. The EJ22 engine in my 2000 OBS is shot. (Long stupid story, let the oil get too low) I've got a 2003 Forester with an EJ251 engine that's got a pretty banged up fender and door from a hit and run. The OBS is a 5s manual, the Forester's an automatic. I've done some net searching and from what I hear, the EJ25 should have no issues swaping into the OBS. Is this correct? Thanks in advance for any and all help.
  16. Hello All, I have a OTB 97 2nd gen witha very dead motor! I just want to know how hard is it to upgrade to a EJ25 3rd gen motor I have heard you have to remove the wiring harness and such.
  17. Hi can anyone tell me what years and models I can swap my EJ22 5 speed motor in. my son rolled his 99 Forester, and now Looking for a new chassis to swap the motor into. Just had it rebuilt still in excellent condition.
  18. So I just had my engine pulled out of my '83 Brat to replace the rear-main seal. Turns out it didn't even have a rear-main seal. Anyways I also found out that the entire EGR system has been plugged. The EA81 in this car is not original so I was wondering if Brats had an EGR system in 1983. If they did, then my engine has been swapped illegally and won't pass inspection; however, if they didn't, then plugging up the EGR system makes sense and is legal. I need to know fast, so any information would be greatly appreciated!
  19. Hi all. I am considering buying an outback. sixth digit in VIN is 6. Owner says it's a 99' with 170,000 miles. He had an oil leak present, then he overheated it. Now the oil leak is alot worse. My guess is the heads are warped. What's your thought's? He said a shop told him it would be a grand to fix? Couple (well lots) of questions but Ill try to keep it slow. Is it worth putting new heads on the original motor with 170k on it? Or is this type of motor a boat anchor with this many miles? Can the heads be swapped with the engine in the car? How hard is it to swap a 2.5 motor, with no lift?
  20. I'm finally getting a move on with my swap project. I've decided to use the FT4WD 5spd transmission from my current xt6 with an adaptor plate and redrilled flywheel (courtesy of SJR). BUT, are there any upgrades that I should do/ that are even available for the xt6 clutch? I'm worried that the stock xt6 clutch may not be able to handle the extra HP/torque of the ez30. I've been on Ebay, and I've noticed that you can get stage 1-2-3 clutch kits for/that fit the xt6, but I have no idea if they're a quality product, or if they will even help. I'm also still not sure what each "stage" means either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  21. First, let me Tell you that I think that such Swap Really is a Bad Idea; but since I've "Been There, Done That" and lots of USMB Members have asked about that via PM to me, I Decided to do this Writeup for an Overall experience Reference. Lets Begin with a brief introduction history: My Subaru Relation Started Long Time Ago... it is a Long Story that I Already had Told here in the Past Years, but Long story Short: My Dad Purchased in 1985 (when I was Child) a White Subaru Loyale Wagon EA82 Almost new (Came Running from the Dealer in California USA, to Honduras) It ran Good for the First five Years, but then the Smog Stuff (Cathalytic converters, etc) got poisoned with the Leaded Gasoline (Here, Unleaded gasoline became available until 1994) so we Removed the Cathalytics, the Carbon Canister, solenoids, hoses and everything related, even the EGR and ASV ... Now it has a Great Weber Carb, H.I.D. Lights, plus many many more Upgrades and actually is my "Everyday Warrior" renamed as "BumbleBeast". Then in 1998 a Dad's Friend who had another EA82 Wagon, that was Light Grey with minor rust in the Back of the Body, (His Garage was Short) but a dead Engine, (Ran out of Oil) was in troubles due to the Hurricane Mitch's Damages that almost destroyed my country; so my dad Purchased that grey wagon with the idea to make it a Spare Parts Car for our White Wagon, and by the Way, help his Friend with some Money... Then, in year 2000 we came across with someone who got his XT6 Horribly Crashed in the back by a Bus and was parting it out... (there are Very Few XT6's in my Li'l Country) ...we obtained its engine and then the Story Begun. To Swap ER27 engine from the XT6 on a loyale takes too much work, time and effort; also needs to be very Creative because it needed a whole Lot of things to be modified and/or created (Built). The ER27 Looks like a EA82 with an extra pair of Cylinders, but is Somehow Odd: The 2.7 does NOT have 6 exhaust ports like the SVX... it throws the exhaust like This: Two cylinders into one Port and the other Cylinder has one by itself on each side, makin' it to Sound like an Old Porsche. Also The 2.7 timing belts are wider than the 1.8 ones. Dad and I (plus few other Helping Friends) During the year 2000, did Swapped the ER27 engine from the XT6 into the former grey "Parts Car" and it Became the Project "Loyale 2.7" the Turbo was only a Future Plan that we Had. (That's the origin of my User name) I Painted in Dark Yellow That grey Wagon (with the ER27 engine) and became my "Weekend Warrior" and since that Swap (Year 2000) I've obtained Lots of Answers to my Subaru questions online here, in USMB; I signed up in january 2001, So even the USMB friends helped out to build that monster. Thank You! The ER27 engine Bolts to the EA82 Gearbox, we just used the ER27 Flywheel (which is Light weighted, compared to the EA82 one) but keeping the EA82 Clutch's pressure plate & Disc. The main Problems are: 1. The ER27 is Huge and it only fit on the engine bay Without the A/C condenser, Radiator & Fans; so the Radiator must be Relocated. Also you need to place a (Black) plastic or metallic barrier behind the Front Grille to avoid little Rocks to reach the Spinning engine's belts / timing belts. You'll need to be a Lot inventive to solve the Radiator problem. I did a Pair of Small Radiators interconnected, with twin fans, which Never were enough for the ER27. Other USMB Members who have done the ER27 Swap, done it with a (4"?) Lift to the Body, so the engine Lowers by dropping the Crossmember, letting a Horizontal Radiator + Fan Mounted in the Hood, with Hood Scoop & Vents; so the Radiator goes in the Top of the Engine, somehow. 2. The ER27 engine holds itself to the Front, so you must fabricate a Metallic "Arm" to place the front engine mount. 3. The ER27 is Heavy weighted and the Extended extra weight to the Front does the wagon a Li'l Saggy and could be unstable (makes the Wagon to Underbrake & Understeer) under certain situations at Higher Speeds. I Used the Front Struts from a 4WD Model (Mine was 2WD, the 4WD ones are a Li'l bit Taller) and used Ford Tempo's front Coil Springs in the front of my Wagon, that helped to keep it on level... in fact, leveling that 2.7 wagon was how I invented all the Suspension mods, that you can Read as complete Write-up, with photos, here: ~► http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/106807-improved-shock-absorbers-and-spring-coils-on-loyales/ 4. You'll Need to Swap the XT6's ECU and Wire Harness. 5. Many things need to be Modified, like the Engine's Crossmember, Power Steering Pump Retrofit, (The one on the XT6 is electronic & Variable) Custom "Y" Pipe, Fuel Pump Upgrade, etc... The Turbo is doable, it has been Done an ER27T and even an ER27SC ... I saw it on www.xt6.net, also you can find more information and photos, here: ~► http://subaruxt.com/old/Pumped.htm ~► http://subaruxt.com/old/under_pressure.htm But since our ER27 Wagon had some Problems with overheating and Underbraking, we decided to leave it alone until we Solve the Radiator and Handling Problems First ... ... so, No Turbo. My Dad used to drive that Yellow ER27 Wagon "Weekend Warrior" at our Hometown, while I use to drive as my "Everyday Warrior" the White Weberized EA82 Wagon, 'cos I live so Far Away home due to my Job. My ER27 (XT6) Wagon Lasted a Decade, Now is Crashed and Dead. More info here: ~► http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/113641-could-this-be-the-end-of-my-27-project/ After we Lost the Dark Yellow 2.7 wagon, I painted my former white wagon in Lighter Yellow with Black Stripes, and became the "BumbleBeast" (More information and photos following the Link that is on my Signature) That ER27 wagon was always some sort of "Still in Development, Project Car", always unfinished, (mainly Due to the lack of Money and time, you know... ) But it was fully Driveable and it ran great and Nice at Regular Speeds, but if you Drive Faster \ Loaded / in many Uphills, the ER27 engine Overheated easily with those small Radiators ... ... maybe the best idea for such a Retrofit of an ER27 engine onto a Wagon, is This: To swap the whole front clip from the XT6 to the Wagon. Now I Know that an ER27 engine doesn't make "Faster" a Loyale, Like an EJ Engine could do, due to the Extra Weight to Horsepower Ratio... So I really Don't think that an ER27 engine is good idea for a Loyale, due to the troubles of the extra weight going to the Front -brakes and suspension- many adaptations -Lots of Patience, fabrications, time and effort- and the null space that remains in the front of the engine's bay -The radiator does not fit and it is difficult to repair or replace the front of the Engine's Parts- and other issues, Like Losing A/C, plus tires wear faster... So, instead of that ER27, a Lightweight LADM Specs EJ engine is better idea. Those Fit Better, Makes the Radiator and everything fits like Stock; also their Power is just Around the ER27 or even Better ... Plus Easy Service to their Front Parts and no "TOD" noise! ... ... I like the Strong & Durable Subaru EJ22 with LADM (Latin American Domestic Market) specs. Those EJ22 did came to Latin America (LADM) with stock Distributor & Carburetor, If I could go back in time... I think that the Subaru EJ Engine is the right way to improve a Loyale, I Hope This information will Help you; please excuse my frankness. If you find this information, useful, let me know by hitting the "Like" button. Kind Regards.
