  1. I am about to tear my motor in my 03 forester X because my timing sproket bearings come out which led to the sprocket slinging off. i tried just replacing that and retiming it, but i still am not getting compression... I was just wanting to figure up some good pistons and rods that aren't OEM. I figure if Im going to have to rebuild i may as well add some horsepower too, but do not know where to look to find some good after market parts. help Will be greatly appreciated. ask questions if you need more details. p.s. This Will be my first subaru build always been with muscle cars till i found this reliable car. To bad one small thing put it in my shop.
  2. The 86 GL wagon I have had been a salvaged total. When I try and get tune up parts they don't fit. (cap and rotor) The vin says its a 1800cc w/o air susp -1988,1989:1800cc 4WD 1990-1994. Checked and rechecked vin and table. When I ordered parts the cap and rotor would not fit. How do I tell if the engine has been changed out, where is the engine code on the motor. Thanks
  3. So I just recently raised my Legacy onto Outback Suspension and put 27' General Grabber AT2's on her. I've noticed a HUGE loss of power, which I expected. With a tired out EJ22 I know its time for an engine swap in the short future. My question is, What are my options? I dont want a EJ25 because of the common HG problems. Would a 3.0 out of an H6 Outback work? I'm open to just about anything, but I wanna try to keep it subaru.
  4. Selling complete vehicle or parting out. 88k original miles. Needs new transmission. Located Kingman AZ close to Las Vegas, NV All offers considered engine type EA82 1.8L single port fuel injected. Transmission type 3AT or M41 hydraulic controlled and vacuum. 1st gear works 2nd and 3rd wont shift into I think its the valve body or clutch pack. Power windows, locks, basically everything else works and many parts in excellent condition. Just not a mechanic and not interested in fixing. Engine runs great AC works excellent. Cash only or trade for trailer. Mark 928-377-9603 markwebfile@gmail.com
  5. 2007 Outback XT with a rod knock due to previous turbo failure. Is it possible to swap out the turbocharged engine with a naturally aspirated engine? I imagine that wiring harness & ECM would have to be swapped also. Anyone have any experience with this? My reason for asking is that I purchased this car in December 2011, burned up and replaced turbo in October 2012, now i have a rod knock. I still owe a lot of money on this car, wife is now without a car to haul the kids & get to work. Looking at options such as rebuilding off of a new short block & selling car, purchasing a used engine from salvage & trying to sell car, or if possible converting car to non-turbo and keeping the car. Any info or suggestions would be greatly apprecitated!
  6. Hello Everyone! This is my first post on the site and I have a question about my 2007 Subaru Impreza 2.5. My car has 125,000 miles and I took it into subaru to get routine maintenance. Of course they told me a few things I should fix on my car, one of which was a leaking valve cover gasket. Before I took it in I also noticed that my car has been making a noisy ticking sound. I believe that the ticking sound has always been there but seems to be louder than in the past. When I talked to the Subaru Tech he told me that there wasn't much he could do unless I wanted to spend 1K plus trying to tinker with the valvles to figure out what the problem was. The service writer told me it wasn't a big deal and I went on my way. Although I would love to just believe that there is nothing wrong with my car, I would like to see if there is anyone out there that can give me a little more information on this subject. I have read that a "Ticking" noise from Subaru's is quite common but the causes can vary. Below are two links of my car with the engine running. If anyone can provide help, it would be very much appreciated! Videos
  7. Recently purchase a JDM EJ25D on ebay. I've made the necessary intake manifold swap, and have also discovered that there are differences in the water pump, timing covers, and A/C mounting bracket. Only one thing (right now) is holding up putting the motor back into the car. The EGR pip rises from rear of the head on the drivers side up to the EGR valve on the intake manifold. The JDM has the port, and it is tapped with the same thread as the USDM head, but the bottom of the hole is different. Here is an image of the JDM port: And here is the same port on the USDM head: As you can see, the bottom of the port on the JDM head has a tiny hole in the center, while on the USDM head, the port is wide open. I don't know whether this difference is due to the market, or the model year, but I would like to know if I can open up the bottom of the port on the JDM engine. If so, how should it be done? I have the exhaust removed from the engine right now, so i can look up through the exhaust port and see that pinhole. Would it be better to drill it out, or try tapping it out with a punch? Any help will be much appreciated! Thanks in advance.
  8. HI GUYS !!!! i'm new here and my first question is, how can i raise my 1984 Gl Wagon another 3-4 inches to allow for a rugged rim/tire combo? is the best option a lift kit? and whats the best rim/tire setup? keep OFFROAD in mind when answering (snow, mud, sand, water...) the pic of the Subaru below is the GOAL !!! so please help. i've seen posts and discussions regarding "ozified" and "scorpion subaru" lift kits but when i search these, it seems they're no longer being produced or don't exist !!! thank you -Mr. SIX9
  9. I have a 1991 loyale that has little rust on the body, new fuel pump, water pump, winter and summer tires. needs a rack and pinion at some point but otherwise great little car. One of the timing belts broke and i suspect while fixing I some how bunged up a valve or i guess it may have happened when the belt went. Engine wont crank past 340ish degrees. Have yet to take the covers off to check. I plan on going through the steps again to do the belts if everything looks alright. Curious to know if swapping out the engine is worth it and can I put in something that is more current with more power. not ready to give up on it as I really enjoy driving it. Also , suggestions on where to get a used but good motor. Im in the edmonton, alberta, canada area.I havent done too much in the way of car mechanics but do enjoy it and can follow a manual. Any suggestions or comments are greatly appreciated. thanks guys.
  10. I'll Try my Best to Shorten this Very Long Story: Today, I Was Drivin' my Weberized "BumbleBeast" Wagon in the Parking Lot of a Huge Shoppin' Mall, when an Old Gentleman Started to Yell at me: "Stop!, Hey You Stop!" ... ... He Took me by Surprise and I Was about to Park my Wagon nearby, so I Did it and the old man approached Saying: "...That's a Really Beautiful Old Subaru you Have..." and he Started to ask me Questions about How did I manage to Fit Those "Standard" wheels in my Subie, also about the Engine's Deep & Loud Sound; Very Kindly I explained some Details... "Weber Carb, I Knew it!" he Said... Long Story Short: He accompanied me to do my errands while we were Talking about Old Subarus for almost the whole afternoon... even we ate lunch Together. He said that He was the Master Mechanic at the Local Subaru Dealer's Repair Shop Long time Ago (Late 1970's to Late 1980's) and he had the opportunity to go in 1983 to FHi in Japan for Training Purposes. Also he Said that at the Training's end, the Japaneses took the Students for a some sort of "Tour" around their Factories, including their Research & Development areas; he saw some Prototypes and some Engines; also some sort of museum and many other Things... He Said that the Third Gen Subaru Leone (Usually Known here as "Loyale" or EA82) was ready to be sold since 1983 but the Japaneses wanted a New Engine to suit the New Car before Launch it Worldwide. Well, Looking to the Subaru's History, you can Confirm the date of the first prototype of that Model... ...they were in the Development of the New Engine for that car; He said that they originally wanted to have a 2.0L Engine to be their "Top of the Line" propulsion for that Model, and the Developments were going on that Way, having the USA Market on Mind as their First Costumer who demanded \ wanted / needed more power from their compact cars. They Already got the EA81 that was a 1.8L engine so, to Make a Newer EA Engine with the Same Displacement does not make any Sense, Right? But their Problems were two: First the SOA's Old Campaign that sounded since 1975: 'Inexpensive, and built to stay that way' broke part of their enthusiasm as the Bigger Displacement engine would Killed the "Stay inexpensive" Idea by increasing Fuel Consumption numbers in EPA charts and somehow increasing import taxes... And Second: the EA Engine Design Platform was Pushed somehow to its Limits... especially with the addition of a Turbo as they where already selling Turbo MPFi versions of the EA81 in Japan since late 1982. So, the Japaneses downgraded the Prototype EA91 engine by destroking it, and Built the EA82 as we Know it, Basically Their novelty was limited to the implementation of Timing Belts ... ... and using the SOHC designation which was in fashion, along with the "Turbo" word, on the 80's. The Old Man Shared many more Stories with me, but the one about the 2.0L EA engine in the Original Prototypes (Codenamed EA91) of the Third Gen Leone, was the Most interesting to Share here... After some errands together and an awesome lunch time, we've talked for hours, He Left the Place with a Big Smile in his Face, going to do what I Did with my Subaru "BumbleBeast": to Change the 4x140 Lug Pattern, redrilling the hubs to let fit "Standard" 4x114.3 wheels on his Old Subaru Leone... Kind Regards.
