  1. I must be blind or stupid, but I can't find my fuel pump relay. Nor can I find the location listed anywhere on here or the Internet. So, I turn to my fellow Subaruians, anyone know where the bastard's hiding? I need to replace him. Also, the 85/86 XT's are unique in their wiring setups, at least according to my craptastic Chilton manual. And even more-so because it's a bloody turbo. So, anyone have any ideas? Every location has been checked aside from putting the car on a lift and scouring the underside. Also, it specifies the relay sits between the EGR valve and the fuel pump in the wiring harness. This may or may not help depending on if anyone's torn down a harness or not. Twitch
  2. I have a good fuel pump relay and fuel pump with good circuit in between. The ground side of the fuel pump relay control circuit (violet wire) goes into the MPFI control unit. Key 'on', the positive side of the relay control circuit reads 12.5 v; the negative side reads 11.5 v. Therefore, my relay is not closing. Does anybody know why it's not giving me a good ground? What might hold it open? I am assuming that is how the MPFI controls the pressure put out by the pump. I possibly had a pack-rat chew wires in the engine compartment but cannot find any damaged wires there.
  3. I have a 1996 Subaru Legacy wagon. Driving, everything fine, then nothing--just died, cranks fine, fire at spark plug, used little gas in intake, fires and tries to start, so fuel problem most likely. Checked fuel pump connector in right rear and power to only right top two connectors--about 5-6 volts and 1 volt, with key in on. Haynes says to check fuel pump fuse first--cannot locate where that fuse is!!! Book says relay is under fuse block on left, (doesn't make sense to have to take off fuse block!) up under dash on sidewall. Will take that and see whether relay is good. Just wondering if anyone knows where a fuse for fuel pump is located! Thanks!
  4. OK a little late on maintenance at 135K miles, I decided to check out the fuel filter. Turns out the only fuel filter is a "sock" inside the gas tank and according to SOA tech "we never change them". Anyone change/examine yours? While on the subject, this week I will be visiting a mechanic to track down the cause of an elusive P0420 that a data log interpretation is pointing to either vacuum leak or poor fuel delivery (perhaps both if I'm really unlucky?). Mechanic plans on "smoking" the car in search of any vacuum leak and then checking fuel pressure. Would you check pressure first or it doesn't matter? Few questions: 1. Can a fuel pump be failing (weak) without obvious symptoms over a period of 2 years and 30K miles? Since the dealer doesn't stock the pump, is this easily replaced? Any directions appreciated. 2. Where is the fuel pressure regulator? Same question about failing/weak fuel pressure regulator symptoms?? 3. Can the "sock" filter become coated and therefore ineffective? Doesn't look like it is replaceable.
  5. I am attempting a compression test on my 99 Legacy Outback. Only thing I need to figure out before getting started is: Where is the fuse or relay to disconnect my fuel pump? Unfortunately I don't have the Haynes manual for my vehicle. I've searched these forums and online, and been digging around my vehicle, and can't seem to find it. Hoping someone here knows. It isn't in the fuse box behind the battery, nor in the driver's side interior fuse box beneath the dash. No mention of it in the user's manual. I asked a clerk at Advance Auto who owns and works on a 2000 Subaru sedan, and she wasn't able to find it either. On hers, it was in the fuse box behind battery. Sorry for the newbie question; hopefully someone can help! Thanks.
  6. So I just got this 1996 subaru impreza, and I can't get it to start. It runs on starter fluid fine and we aren't getting any sort of fuel out of the fuel line. I pulled the fuel pump tonight and I was curious if I could bench test it somehow? It looks pretty bad it is covered in rust but it might still be good. Also if anybody knows any weak points in the fuel system that would warrant looking at I would appreciate it. I am fairly new to this and so I am trying to learn as I go. (note: if there is any way of checking the relays wthout having to pull them out of the car or maybe the easiest way to pull one out.)
  7. I drive a 1998 Subaru Legacy Postal station wagon with well over 160,000 miles - odometer quit working. I deliver mail from this vehicle, and have had to replace the fuel pump about every other year. What would cause the fuel pump to go bad so often? The car still sputters, once in a while, when I accelerate. Another problem I have - don't know if it is related - is after I put gas in the car, it will not start the first time I turn the key. The second time I turn the key it starts, but idles very low, and eventually reaches the correct idle speed. Any ideas what causes this problem?
  8. Hello everyone, Nice website you've got here, I finally had to stop lurking and make an account because she stopped running and it was time to ask for help, so here goes: I've got an 86 subaru GL, 300,000+ miles, rebuilt ea82, she's been running really well lately but the other day I started her up on the first try, as usual, just jumped right to life. I drove about 10 feet and stopped at a stop sign and the engine died. Wouldn't start but still turn over. Checked the fuel pump fuse and it was blown, so I replaced it and she started right up again. I drove about 4 blocks and it died again, wouldn't start. Fuel pump fuse was blown again. Replaced the fuse, started up, and died immediately. Fuse was blown again. Subsequently replaced and blew 3 more fuses, without the car running for more than a second, and was then all out of spares and had to get a tow back home. I've been hearing it could be that the fuel pump relay has gone out. My plan was to replace the relay this afternoon and see if that does it, but I could use some information in regards to the location of the fuel pump, or if anyone else has any ideas or solutions it'd be great to her em. Thanks!
  9. I got my fuel pump to work, now I have ran into another issue. It won't shut off. On top of that my dash lights wont dim and my heater won't work. For those of you who don't know I recently stripped the interior of my Brat to paint and now I'm reinstalling it. I had a grounding problem that was causing a lot of problems but with the help of you guys I figured it out. Now I've ran into more issues, like my fuel pump not shutting off. It worked just fine when I disconnected it. I did a search and it would seem that the most likely problem is that I connected it to the wrong plug, yet here's the plug I connected it to, same color, same wires. It's the black one on the right I'm adding these other issues because they may be related. My dash lights won't dim which is most likely a grounding problem. The only ground looking wire I've been able to find is this guy, and it's spliced into a hot wire into the back of the fuse box. Tried grounding it just in case, repeatedly blew fuses. I did convert to LED's My heater isn't working. It was working on high, but now not at all. I will admit I had the fan motor apart to check the bushings. They were in good condition. I may have screwed up when I put them back in. Right now, I'm more focused on the fuel pump. I do have this gadget that needs to go somewhere. I believe it goes here but the colors on the wires don't match up. The pink one in the center. As far as I know everything else is working. Thanks for the help.
  10. I just picked up an awesome condition 96 legacy awd auto sedan, and it will run, but if you shut it off it will not restart. also, if you drive it when it runs, you get a couple miles down the road, and it stalls. let it sit, it starts right back up, no engine trouble codes. last owner said he thinks its the fuel pump? relay seems to work good, and i have started locating it but cannot find a green relay. and ideas guys?
