  1. I've got a 91 subaru Liberty LX, it has 290,000 km on it (about 180k miles) and hasn't missed a beat since I got it about 6 years ago at 220,000km. Until this past weekend of course... I was reversing out of our driveway, and just as I was about to go out onto the road, I head a clunk and it stopped moving, the engine was still running. I heard a quiet tapping sound for a few minutes before it went away. Now it idles fine like it did before with no strange sounds, but when I put it into gear, nothing happens. doesn't matter if it's 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th or reverse. It won't move, it doesn't make any noises shift still feel great, clutch feels fine. What makes me the most nervous is that I can shift into gear while the engine is on without the clutch so I don't think the engine is spinning the gearbox. But if the driveshaft is broken, wouldn't it make noise? I've checked the CV joints in case one broke and that's why it won't go but they are solid. I have picked up a 1990 Nissan Pulsar so I can take my time getting the subaru back on the road and do everything right. Any help is greatly appreciated.
  2. The patient: 1999/2000 RX Liberty wagon (EJ251) 5spd manual. Issue: swapped in second hand gearbox (pick a part special!) only to find the vehicle now has a wobble like feeling from the front left when under acceleration, becomes worse with heavier acceleration. All other times the vehicle generally feels unsettled. Both of these issues were not present with the last gearbox. The other issue is that I have that totally awesome “catch-let go-catch-let” go feeling or experience when turning tight such as when performing a U turn - classic symptoms of a dead centre diff.Questions: 1) can a stuffed centre diff create the issue with the front end that I’m experiencing?2) can the viscous gel stuff leak from the viscous LSD housing, and if so, what does it look like? Question 2 was asked because after stripping down the old box that was replaced, I’ve found a ball of what looks like silicone near the front diff area, and in between the drive and output of the centre diff is the same sort of material. It does seem like silicone but it’s just odd. This gearbox has presumably done over 400k km now - if it hasnt been changed at some point. It was swapped because of a bearing noise and it was slipping out of gear (possibly due to shot pitch stopper rod and gearboxs mount).Upon rotating the centre diff it seems the noise is in the rear bearing. This centre diff is good so itll end up in the wagon either way - unless that grey material is the viscous gel stuff. The plan is to build one good box from the two. I’ll be replacing the front diff bearings, all seals and most likely use the centre diff bearings from the replacement box as there’s zero noise from this box, other than the noise when performing a U turn. Cheers Bennie
  3. Subaru legacy 1997 needs oil in gearbox, according to the two dipsticks. But I can't find where to fill it, or top it up. Manual useless ! Thanks if you can help.
  4. Hello folks, exist somewhere a list with all subaru-transmission codes?? greets bert
  5. Hi, I have a 2010 2.0 turbodiesel Legacy wagon with 175k km that I bought one year ago. It has a complete service record and has been maintained on schedule from the same garage since new. It's parked outside and gets driven about 4-5 times per month. Lately it won't shift into 1st or 2nd at startup, or until the engine/transmission is warm. That's about 10 minutes. I tried the tricks I know from my old Land Rover. Double-clutching doesn't help. Shifting into 3rd while stopped and then trying 1st or 2nd also doesn't work (this works on a Land Rover with a dragging clutch). There's no apparent grinding; the lever just won't move. For the two times I've driven it in this condition, I've used 3rd to get going the first time, and once underway I was able to select 2nd, and 1st once I slowed way down. (Then I just left it in 1st with my foot on the clutch, so I could get going again). It can select all gears easily when cold if the engine is turned off. I ensured that the clutch pedal goes to the floor. The clutch fluid reservoir is full and clean. The transmission oil is full and black and apparently has 20k km on it. The air temperature is below 5 C when this happens, but last winter it never happened, not even below freezing. Is this a known issue with these transmissions or clutches? What should I look at, clutch or gearbox? What would you recommend? Thanks, Jeremy in Switzerland
  6. Hi folks, i have got a 96 RX impreza (im in au btw so will be putting it on AUSubaru too) and i need to swap out the gearbox. Front pinion bearings are gone, 3rds syncro is gone, 4th is on the way out etc etc old gc series gearbox fun stuff. Anyways im trying to find the gear ratios for it to see how close a 2010 RX gearbox is to the ratios in mine so i can see how well it will run without much engine modification other than what i already have planned. And yes Subaru have stopped making parts for the model so i would rather put in the new one since it is apparently a straight changeover. The transmission code is TY752VRBAA. The reason im getting on here is because i cant find any record of it on the internet, i've looked at transmission spec spreadsheets, 93-96 workshop manuals but still cant find anything definitive. Any info that can help or at least send me in the right direction would be awesome. And also has anyone done a conversion like this that can give me some tips? Thanks in advance.
  7. Hi theres, I did I site search with no help coming up, so I thought id try here: I own a 91 brumby which has the ea81 and 4 speed in it, diff ratio is 3.7, I am wanting to swap that engine and box out and fit a rebuilt ea81 and a 5 speed my friend has a spare ea81 and 5 speed box he said came out an early 80's model brumby (all the info he had) my question is does anyone know what box this is attached to his engine as I cant find any info and want to match the ratios (on side of gearbox is stamped : FM-4 and written on a foil sticker : 805067 any help what car the box is out of or what ratios it has would be very helpful thanks
  8. G'day all, I'm reassembling my gearbox after changing some gear sets. When I get the front cases together I can easily select 1st through 5th, but cannot fully select reverse, it'll only go half way without any gear engagement. Is this normal, as in should I just assemble and know it will work once back in the vehicle or is there something else at play here? I'm out of ideas and have now had this box split three times! NOT FUN! Regards Bennie
  9. Alsalam Alaykom and Good day, i am seeking for knowledge as it is not found anywhere around, i have several problem with my 97 Subaru Impreza "FWD-1.6" which i really love so much, and i was hoping to find some answers in here as even in the internet haven't much related to my car: when i am on the first gear, and raise my foot gently to make the car moves "without using acceleration" the whole engine shakes real bad, and to over come on this problem, i have to use the acceleration, which i don't consider normal as i have driven so much cars that could drive without using the acceleration, although there's a little shake in the other gears, but the first gear is the worst experience, so i was hoping for some answers regarding this matter, what trouble shooting i should do. i would like to have a full map for all the sensors for 97 Subaru Impreza "FWD-1.6" with the function of each one, and how to check on them. in winter, when its cold, the engine temp. decrease so much, and i don't know the reason for that. the engine sound is so loud, like lots of loud quick "tic-tic-tic-tic", is this normal in subaru world? what are the things that i suppose to check from time to time, and what should be replaced after exact time or km i really appreciate your time for just reading my problems, and i am hoping to hear from anyone that might help me, as you don't know how much this car means to me, it's love
