  1. Suspension on my '95 Legacy is pretty shot (well at the least the rear for sure) I keep hearing that Outback struts will bolt right up and lift the car about 1.5 to 2 inches. I think this is a great idea. But I feel like there is more to it? Do I need outback springs? spacers? anything like that. If anyone can give me any leads/video's/info on this swap. That'd be Great. thanks- travis
  2. Haven't done anything like this before and need some advice. I just recently bought a 1997 Subaru Legacy Outback Limited and the stereo needs to go. It's a single din and only has a tape deck and radio and the tape deck doesn't work. Found a guy selling a 2002 Subaru Impreza/Wrx double din within my range. I have the schematics to take everything apart to get to the radio but will I be running into problems with it being an 02 double din stereo going into a 97 set up for a single din and what I'll need to make this change? (have the extra compartment below the stereo that I will take out to make it fit a double din). Thanks
  3. hello my name is mike ,i'm from IL and have just purchased my first Subaru,2001 outback $600.00 bed head gaskets. $200.00 and 8 hours of labor its back on the road. I also gasket matched and ported the intake, cylinder head and exhaust manifolds, are there any other quick and easy mods I can do that any knows of to get a little more pep out of the motor?
  4. I'm trying to track down a vehicle option that I've only ever seen once before. My brother wants one for his OBW, but I can't seem to find any record of them even existing. In my 1997 legacy outback limited there was a hard plastic cargo organizer/tray. It was about 8-9 inches deep and had removable dividers. It filled/covered the entire floor of the hatch area. This was in addition to the rubber/plastic giant floor mat at everyone has in their outback. This bin/organizer/tray/whatever sat on top of the normal mat. It was stamped with SUBARU. It came from the dealer. It was awesome. I have never seen another like it and I can find no mention of it in any searches. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? it just occurred to me that I've been referring to this thing in the past-tense. I still have it. It is has been made to fit my forester. If it will help, I can brave the frigid cold and try to clear all of the junk out of it and get a picture.
  5. I recently bought a 2006 outback , the car has had front end damage before . That doesn`t bother but the two not matching headlights do. In the passenger side they have one with the black background and the drives side is chrome. I don`t mind either one but can someone tell me what to order to get a mate to either thanks for now
  6. Hi, I recently totaled my 2001 Impreza Outback Sport. Before accident it would have been "Very Good" by KBB description. Both interior and exterior had only minor wear that could only be seen up close. Never had any major mechanical issues, tires were new about 14,000 miles ago. I took it in for regular maintenance every 3000. Brakes were still at 60-70%. It was all stock, no additions, nothing missing, orig cassette deck/radio, orig mats, cargo cover and liner, spare tire, jack, etc. It has 142,000 miles on it now. The accident: spun out on some ice and front of car hit cement barrier. Front bumper, one headlight, and passenger fender are the only visual things that got hit, but there is probably interior damage. Insurance declares it a total loss. Auto shop estimate to fix was $2400. Insurance repair estimate was $3600, they valued the car at $4500. Car starts and runs like nothing happened, but the front tires are rubbing against something when you turn the wheel. I don't want to drive an uninsured salvage or rebuilt title car, so I'm going to take the partial payment from insurance and sell the totaled (unrepaired) car to a private party or mechanic, etc. Any ideas on how much I should expect or try to get for this? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks for reading!!
  7. Just purchased a beautiful 1998 Outback Legacy. One of the small details I dislike about it is the wood trim pieces. Any thoughts? Replacement? Swap?
  8. So I just picked up a 97 Legacy Outback with 130k for $3000. It had the stock radio in it until one day I took it out to hook up a sub and amp. When I took the stereo out I tore 2 wires on accident. A yellow wire and a green and white wire. I connected them and put the radio back in seeing as it isn't compatible with a sub or amp. The radio wasn't working so I checked the fuse and it was blown. I replaced the fuse, still no radio, ensured the wires that tore were connected and they were. Still nothing. Think I fried the radio? Im about to go on a 4 hour road trip in a few days and I want some tunes. Help?
  9. Does anyone know whether Outback Wagons were ever produced with the 3.0R (H6) Engine and a manual transmission? I'm looking for an extremely specific model from the early 2000's, but don't want the gas guzzling 2.5T. I've owned both a 2005 Legacy GT Ltd (Manual) and a 2008 Forester XT Ltd (Auto) and need another Subie for my commute. Thanks.
  10. Hi all, I'm new here and just bought a 97 outback and have been having overheating issues. A mechanic did a leakdown test and determined that it was a leaking radiator, so I replaced the radiator along with the thermostat, and the upper radiator hose (the aftermarket lower hose didn't fit). The engine runs great and drives fine around town, but when I take it on the freeway it overheats. It'll run well for anywhere from 2 minutes to an hour until the temperature suddenly rises. It takes about 30 seconds to go from normal temp to red line. If I stop for a minute and run the fan then it will return to normal temp and I can drive another couple of miles before the problem develops again. I took it to another mechanic who did another coolant leakdown test and he said the system held pressure just fine. Any ideas? I'm worried that it's a head gasket, but shouldn't that show up in a leakdown test or wouldn't it also overheat at low speeds? Could the thermostat just suddenly close?
  11. Hi all, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I'm trying to find a good mechanic in the Raleigh/Durham/Cary area to do a head gasket job on my 97 outback. I took it to a dealer who just tried to get me to trade it in, so I want to find someone who wants to repair the car, not just sell me a new one. Any recommendations?
  12. Hey Everyone. I have a '95 Legacy LS. I'm pretty sure it's about time to change the struts. I believe they are original parts on a legacy with 350k on it. I was thinking about putting some outback struts on it, hopefully giving it 1 to 1-1/2 inch lift. Just enough room for a slightly more aggressive tire. I'm not sure if I can just swap the struts out or do I need to swap other parts out in addition to make it all compatible. Thanks for any input you have Travis.

  14. Quick question, I have a 2002 Subaru Outback sedan Automatic with the 3.0L but has a back read diff. and I was wondering if I could take a read diff out of a 2001 Legacy L which is also an automatic with the 2.5L and put it in the Outback. I know the bolts will match up I was just wondering about the gear ratios. I know that there's a difference between the Autos ans standards but wondering the same thing base models and Outbacks
  15. I've narrowed my new (used) car search down to a 2011 Outback (38,xxx miles) http://www.carfax.com/VehicleHistory/p/Report.cfx?partner=CSE_0&vin=4S4BRBCC9B3389671 and a 2011 Forester (25,xxx miles). Both are the base 2.5x model, with pretty limited features outside of alloys. http://www.carfax.com/VehicleHistory/p/Report.cfx?partner=VAS_0&vin=JF2SHBBC0BH719209 I've had one experience with a Subaru and that was driving a new model Outback over the course of 4 days through Montana. I enjoyed it, the paddle shifted CVT tranny felt nice and crisp, had great leg room front and back, seemed to handle well enough (I drive a 2003 Hyundai Sonata, just about anything is better than this) and I enjoyed the car overall outside of the fairly significant blind spots. I have not driven a Forester, yet. I'd like to know about experiences with each vehicle, namely reliability, maintenance and anything mechanical. Thanks
  16. I have some hail damage on the exterior door trim (belt molding and upper molding) of my 2013 Outback. How do I remove those trim pieces?
  17. I'm driving my 2013 Subaru Outback up an 8 mile dirt road to the top of a mountain where I live. I do this pretty much twice a day, to and from work to go up and down the mountain to the pavement and on another 40-50 miles to work and back. I've got Continental tires now and have had them for about one year (bought my Outback in 2012), moved up here to the Ozarks and have been driving like the above said for a year. I've got about 23k miles on the outback now, and it seems that the treads are now going and I'm getting a hole every other week from rocks etc. What with this being the case I have now been looking into getting some better tires, however am running into the difficulty of finding a good off roading tire that is in a smaller ply. I'm told all I can go to is a 5ply. I have no idea where to start, what the recommended brands are or who has the best pricing on the. Moseyed to this forum for your guys' help. Please give me some suggestions. The tire size on the car currently is 1225/60 R 17 98T. Really what I am looking to find is a good tire that I can keep longer than 20k miles. Again Please Help!
  18. Hi guys, I'm new to this forum and would like some advice about the engine swap that will be getting done for my subaru pretty soon. I have a 2002 outback base 2.5l that I was pretty sure was a dohc when I first got it, and I havent checked the VIN yet to make sure since the car is at storage. Here is the question though, what would need to be done to make a DOHC work for a car that had a SOHC in it, because the engine is already on its way and it would cost way too much to send it back and get a new one. The engine I have coming is a 2005 ej254 DOHC 2.5l 16 valve with only about 65K miles on it, the engine block for my old engine is completely siezed up so replacing it is the only good option for me at this point, ill just scrap the old one or give it to someone who has the time to tinker with it. Any information would be very helpful , thanks.
  19. I'm looking for a trailer hitch for my 2006 Impreza Outback (I want to use a bike carrier). I just got a Class II trailer hitch with a 1 1/4" receiver from a tractor supply store and when I took this to my mechanic to get it installed, they told me this was for an Impreza and not an Impreza Outback. So do they make trailer hitches for 2006 Impreza Outbacks? Thanks for anyone's help.
  20. Similarly to chrisw's issue at http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/140703-repair-the-engine-or-buy-another-car/, I am also not sure if I should repair/replace the engine in my 2001 H6 Outback, or just send it to scrap yard (as the dealer suggests). The car just died on me last weekend on my way back from a camping trip. It showed first "CHECK ENGINE" and then I noticed it started to overheat and eventually the engine shut donw. I did not expect this to happen, since my car has only about 130,000 km on it and I cared for it well for 12 years. The Toronto dealer shop (where I usually go to) told me basically the engine is gone - it caused the coolent system not to work properly due to some presure issue. I am not sure of all the details, but that is the gist of what I understood. He said it might be a head gasket, but he suspects that some other part of the engine was broken. I can drive the car fine for about 15 minutes, before I need to stop and let it cool. Has anyone heard of this H6 3.0L engine issue? From what I've been reading these engines should last longer than the 2.5 (H4) engines - since they should not have that many head gasket issues. I allso looked at the used H6 refurbished on http://www.ccrengines.com/, and see they are not cheap (over $6000). This, plus shipping to Canada, makes my feel such a repair is definitely not worh the car's value - assuming it is in good running order (which is not more than $5000). If anyone of you know of good independent mechanic in Toronto (Canada) area who could give me a second opinion, I would be very greatfull. Thanks
  21. Howdy. We have a 1999 Legacy Outback in overall good working order (it has a rebuilt motor less than 3 years old which runs great). When I depress the lever and engage the cruise control - the car goes into cruise control, but slows 4 to 6 miles per hour, depending on the overall speed. It will then hold that speed just fine. To cruise at 65 mph, I would have to engage it at 70 or 71 to allow for the slow down. It is bothersome to say the least. Is this going to be a computer problem, electrical, or more mechanical - like a bad CC unit in the steering column ? Any other ideas would be great. Is this something a garage can electronically diagnose? Thanks, Craig
  22. Hi - this is a 2005 Outback - the VDC (R 3.0) We took a trip to NYC last weekend, and after two days on the rough roads our Outback began to drip a heavy oil from the rear differential crossmember support bar bushing. This crossmember is located forward of the axles and rear of the U-joint. There is a bushing about 2.5" diameter on each end of this 18"(+-) crossmember. I did not realize that bushings had fluid in them. Is it critical I replace them with the OEM bushing, which I have not been able to find? What I see online appear to be solid. Is there a performance upgrade which you can recommend ? Does this have a different name I might search with? Thanks for your help. Craig
  23. My 2013 Outback, which I purchased in July 2012, has a very early Fujitsu ten Navigation system. Apparently, the original nav systems were modified and newer versions have been installed since January 2013. My nav system has had its original SD card replaced and a firmware update performed. It still does not work properly. The location arrow on the screen is ahead of where the car is actually located by 300 feet or more, even when GPS satellites are not blocked. Consequently, turn instructions come just as I am passing the place to turn. This makes the unit almost useless unless I am traveling at a very slow rate. My dealer claims to be unable to duplicate the error and does not know how to CALIBRATE the location arrow. Can the position arrow be calibrated to the actual vehicle location? If so, what Subaru technical bulletin provides instructions on how to calibrate the location arrow? My '09 Forrester with the old type nav system with a location arrow that can be calibrated easily by the user. This nav system is spot on. Any experts out there?
  24. New to the forum and the world of Subarus (for the most part). My girlfriend and I selling our vehicles (hers a 2000 Wrangler, just sold, mine a 2001 Buick, still on the market) and are planning on buiying a sub 100k mile Subaru wagon for between $5k and $7k, preferably around 6500. We don't have a specific model in mind, but I am looking for advice on what the most reliable models in that price range would be (from about 1999 to 2005).. I know Subarus are known for their reliability, but i have noticed here and there on the Web that certain issues arise in certain engines. Any and all input would be appreciated! As of yet, we are still waiting to sell my car before making a purchase. However, we may look at a 2004 Outback H6 with 80k miles this weekend, so any info on that model would be great! I noticed the gas mileage wasn't great and the transmission a bit dated. Any issues? Yay or nay on this model? It's listed at $5900, well below KBB, so I'm just as suspicious as I am excited.
  25. Last year I posted on here about my brake and battery light flashing on my dash on my '02 Outback. Everyone said it was my alternator. I took it to a shop and they confirmed and said my battery was bad too. So, they installed a new battery and alternator for about $600. Fast-forward to a couple weeks ago, my brake and battery light come on again, but don't flash. They just stay on. I decided it might be a fluke and just continue driving it. Nothing seemed wrong. Now, fast-forward to yesterday. I was driving from an appointment that was in a town about an hour away. I noticed something was wrong when I put the car in first gear and the radio shut off. I continued driving and notice my spedometer stopped working, basically everything stopped working. I was still able to drive about 15 miles close to home until my powersteering went out and I lucky pulled into an offroad. I looked under the hood to see what was wrong and found this: Any idea what could cause this to happen? This is the positive wire that connects to the back of the alternator. It appears to come from under the fuse relay box near the battery. It completely got fried off! So my questions are: 1) What could cause this to happen? 2) Does anyone have walk-through on how to install a new alternator. 3) What brand of alternator is the best? Should I get a re-manufactured or new one?
