  1. Hi! I just got my first Subaru a week ago, and discovered this forum today - a 2006 Outback 2.5 Limited is mine now, and lucky for me has documentation on all the work done! Most importantly, it's HAD all the major work done, which is awesome. It's also a 5-speed (hooray!).
  2. Hello all, I have just pulled the first Front CV shaft from my 1998 gen 2 outback and the new shaft I bought is different, The seller assured me it was correct but I couldn't know the difference until I put them side by side. Have I been stuffed around and given the wrong parts? Do I need to return these and get the correct ones or do these work just look different? Thanks Scott Ps. Being it's Sunday and I will have to return them in a weekday I am a little Sh@@@@d off that the car will have to sit in the shed for at least a week if they are wrong !
  3. What year (years) WRX would be what I need to do a whole drivetrain swap for my 1998 Outback Legacy Wagon? I want to make a real sleeper. Looking the same but loads of power, brakes, etc. Any links to projects like this appreciated. Anyone on here do similar? Thanks in advance! Michael
  4. Very excited to get out and adventure with my brand new Outback! Pictured here with a whopping 36.5 miles on it!
  5. Hi guys! I am new to the site and found some really great info here! Now, I am asking for some advice. I found a 1997 Subaru Legacy Outback for sale. I got him down to $600. Here's the breakdown: The car threw a rod and is not working. Body is in great shape with very minimal work to be done. The engine is a 2.5L and has 197K miles. Heres the original link: http://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/pts/4915036530.html I'm wondering if $600 is a great deal to start a new project car. I was probably going to buy a new engine and swap it with the same 2.5L engine when I find one. Thanks for the help!
  6. Hey all! I have my eye on a taillight at a local Pick N Pull. My current passenger side cover got smashed when a transport truck backed into my Subaru a year ago. I can grab the back both taillight covers for 60.00 and I really want to do this first thing in the morning - Monday- I was able to score 2 Outback bucket seats yesterday - Saturday- and folks I tell you for 80.00 including taxes they are a wheel of a deal.. I will pick up seat covers to protect them for sure, because I destroyed the last ones being they had no covers. Back on the topic I just want to say thank you in advance for any info... I have undone the three nuts that are 5/16 in size however the covers still are not yielding and I am not sure what the next step is... My next question is that I want to replace the clutch on my 2.2 standard before this one goes. I am not sure how long a cutch is suppose to last however this one has been in there for 4 years and she has seen some serious action. I want to get a really nice clutch and install it myself for the experience so if anyone has any guidance to share that would be sweet as well. I would think the 2.2 would be a little less involved than this video but similar. http://youtu.be/2jePj03rsL0 thanks again for any help that anyone can offer or if you know of a thread elsewhere on the forum boards that would be cool.. please enjoy... my first hyper lapse tour with my precious beast... Cheers, Johnny CROWN LAND PRODUCTIONS
  7. Introduction I got the best Subaru mechanic in the world, I met him on this website, I think, but maybe not. Shawn@RetroRoo.com has given me permissions to document my 98 Outback's transmission issues on the condition that I do it well. If I may add a little comedy because Subaru cars are a whole different ballgame compared to a V8 351C, or a 74' Nissan or 6 cyl. 56' International, or 69' Camaro SS 350, or a… Just a whole different ballgame. But I always, always wanted to own an Outback! Long story long two years ago (i know this because I just paid off the twenty five hundred loan) I bought a 98' Outback Legacy Limited because the body was great for the year but the price was more than I wanted to spend, and that would have been okay given I also knew the head gaskets were blown, and like an idiot, AFTER I DO MY RESEARCH AND A WARNING ABOUT A 'CERTIFIED' MECHANIC, I made my first, and last, major f-up. I paid the guy who I bought my Subaru from, who said he was a mechanic, an extra $700 to replace the blown head gaskets. Duh! So'eth my credit card suffers to this day when those heads shortly blew. With my tail between my legs Shawn met me with a head job of epic proportions, but with not much concern. What I discover is a mechanic who uses OEM and NEVER aftermarket engine parts and will not inflate those parts, too much… but will always charge the hourly book for the job and save me a lot of cash in the end. I do not live in in a place are where you can pull an engine and work on it in your garage. I no longer have the tools. I just need a great mechanic. Tomorrow we talk about Code p0740.
  8. Today I purchased a 2004 Legacy Outback 2.5 V6 I have been searching for a few weeks now with no luck. Yesterday I drove 400+ miles driving through the mountains looking at dealerships and couldn't find anything I liked. This morning I found one less than 10 miles from my house. It has a few issues but nothing too serious I got a great deal on it $2450. My family is every excited about it much more leg room than my 2 door Mustang.
  9. i have a 2006 Outback 2.5 XT and the turbo failed. I am looking for alternative options for replacement other than another stock turbo. Would prefer to spend less that what i was quoted for a new turbo from Subaru (approx. $1400 for parts and gaskets + install per my mechanic). While I wouldn't mind a perfomance upgrade I dont want my mechanic to have to do any fabrication or modification to install the new unit. I'm sure there is a great bolt on option, but I just dont know about it. We bought the Outback new, it is all stock, and has 130,000 miles on it. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.
  10. Hey guys im currently doing a clutch replacement and since it has over 200k miles on it i just bought a new flywheel from Napa and i didnt notice that it was missing the center piece where there has 6-8 holes for the flywheel bolts...i'll upload pics down below. this flywheel has the center peice this flywheel does NOT have the center piece from napa.... Now my question is do i return it for a flywheel that has the center piece or am i suppose to buy the center piece and press it in? a quick response would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again US community!
  11. Greetings! I have a 2007 2.5i Ltd. with 95K miles on it. I'm a DIYer interested to learn about what to watch out for on this car, what preventative stuff to do, and what the essential resources are (forums and other sites, parts sites, manuals, ...). I'm starting with swapping in a new passenger axle (torn boot) and doing a timing belt service (got the axle and a timing belt kit from FCP). Thank you for any advice! Best, Mark
  12. I have a 97 impreza outback sport and yesterday the power started to cut in and out like a bad battery/ground connection. earlier that day I had swapped my battery with someone at the river that had left there lights on. and didn't have the proper tools to tighten it back up so that's what I thought was happening. but I start to smell soothing burning and notice a light from a fire by my feet. so I stopped to check it out at and notice it was my clutch cable arcing and almost catching fire. I do notice when I push down on the clutch just a nuff that the peddle meets the cable it stops and I regain power as if it is grounded
  13. Hey guys, I'm new to the forum, but I have been on the subaruoutback.org forum for almost a year. This looks like a great place to get some info and help!
  14. I just purchased a 2015 Outback. I'm having trouble getting my iMessages from my iPhone 6 to show up on the Outback entertainment/communications system. My phone and the system are linked and I'm not having issues making and receiving phone calls or playing music on my phone. I'm assuming that there is a setting required somewhere on the iPhone itself to enable the transfer of the messages to the Outback's electronics, but I can't figure out what setting that is. Can someone help me?
  15. Hey everyone I just have some questions relating to the exhaust on my 97 Legacy, was wondering if anyone has experience that would be most helpful. I recently put UEL headers on (with questionable success) and after replacing the stud I broke I am dissapointed at the lack of noise. Im looking at a Magnaflow 14832 (No fart cans!) however the inlet size on that is 2.25 inches. Can anyone tell me what the stock exhaust diameter should be on a 97 Legacy? Also, since I am operating on a college budget and do not have access to a welder, what would be the best method of coupling the muffler, pipe, and most likely adapter together? Ive seen butt joints and slip joints with sleve clamps (and copper RTV silicone) on them. How reliable are these? Ive already put up with horrible exhaust leaks and do not want to go back and "unbreak" stuff again. What would be best? Or should I just give up and pay some shop to do it for me before I find out its not possible?
  16. I'm new to this board, but I'm on several other ones. I need to know the answers to this problem quickly, please help! I'm doing the head gaskets on my 1998 Legacy Outback EJ25 DOHC. I've rounded off several of the cam cap bolts on the passenger side head because the metal is very soft. 1. How can I remove these bolts without getting metal shavings in my head? 2. What can I do to prevent having the same problem on the other head? Thanks in advance.
  17. I just bought a 97 obw and I know little about it but im learning as I go, so far I have replaced my trunk latching stops or whatever they are called with newer ones from a newer obw to remove the trunk rattle, had a bad squeal on startup from my starter so im replacing that, my idle has been all over the place even at walking speed and anytime i move to neutral when coasting and such I checked my mass airflow sensor and its clean as a whistle so Im assuming its the throttle control module so I ordered that and am ready to replace. another issue is my rear wiper doesnt work and when I try and turn it on a strange buzzing noise comes from my left and behind me but not all the way at the back it sounds like something in the back passenger door or something wiring related any ideas? and last but not least my clutch pedal squeaks like a hamster in heat... any permanent fix for this? thanks MrLinfoot
  18. I have an 06 Outback Wagon and the lights in the cernter console do not work. The radio and yellow light for defroster still come on. I checked the illuminator fuse and it was fine. I think the bulb behind the center console is blown, has anyone had experiance with this? Anyone know the name of the bulb that I need to replace? I know how to take off the console but from there I am not familiar, where is the bulb? Is there anything else it could be it it isnt bulb or fuse? Thanks for help....
  19. While underneath my car trying to find and patch the exhaust leak for the umpteen-thousandth time, just by chance I looked up at the right time and I noticed my right front axle shaft boot was torn completely. There was a small amount of grease splattered around, but nothing major enough to have noticed from that. I have no idea how long it has been like this. How much of a possibility of damage is there if I kept driving? I have two jobs to go two, one 20 minutes away and one 30 minutes away (luckily one of them is right next to a Subaru dealership, I work in the shop at a Dodge dealer.) I can borrow my parents car for now but I'm wondering if it'll cause damage if I drive anywhere with it. Thanks guys
  20. What size tires can I put on a 99 LGT lifted with 99 outback struts? And what could I fit with struts and Springs from the same model?
  21. am trying to find the best fit of sti engine to go into my 03 legacy outback. Any feedback would be much appreciated need a winter project and cant think of anything better.I live in minnesnowta so ill have plenty of time to work on it lol. Thanks for the help!!!
  22. Hi all, I've been poking around the forums and I've noticed plenty of great suggestions. Hopefully you all can help me out. My wife's beloved 96 Outback has been stalling for a month or so now, and we can not figure it out what is going on! We've had it in and out of two different shops with no luck. It stalls hot, cold, at speed, at stop signs, turning, not turning, AC on/off... It isn't reproducible, and has seemingly no trend. In general, it seems to stall as it is going to idle. The power stays on, and no engine check light appears. Poking around the threads, I've noticed MAF seems to be a common failure point. I cleaned it out, and although it seemed to run better, it still stalled. Reading elsewhere that if you unplug it, it may solve the problem, but the car ran terribly, idling wildly. Perhaps this points to something? The car will usually start right back up, however I did have one time at a light I could not get it to stay on. The starter kicked the rpms up, and then as the rpms came back down, it would stall, with no response from pumping the gas. This seems to point me in the direction of a fuel issue, although the fuel pump is new as of last year. I'm thinking of just replacing it again myself, or at least tracing down some of the fuel lines to make sure there are no pinches? The car doesn't have much worth as it is, so I'd hate to go down an expensive wild goose chase with mechanics. The shop doesn't want to deal with it because, of course, it never stalls when they drive it... I've been downgraded to my bike since my wife has to commute, and the upcoming Oregon rainy season is putting the pressure on. Any help is appreciated!
  23. Hi guys, I'm new to the forum and wanted to see if anyone had any advice on working on my Subaru. It's a 1997 Subaru Legacy Outback with the 2.5L DOHC engine. Of course I had the head gasket go so now it is sitting in my driveway as I get ready to work on it. What I wanted to know is there anything else I should be looking at and replacing while I am working on the engine. I know the timing belts are known to have some problems so I was going to replace that. Anything else I should keep an eye out for?
  24. New member, 1st post... I need some extra storage on my 2011 Outback in order to conserve space in the cabin. Ideally a rooftop cargo basket seems ideal. But too many i'm finding require extra rackmount systems, some of which seem way overpriced (yakima, thule). My Outback already has the crossrails that swivel from siderails to crossbars. What cargo basket is best for installing right on these factory bars? Thanks!
  25. Hey everyone, so I just bought a 2000 Impreza Outback, standard, for only $500! Just needs brakes and two front struts! But I also needed a battery. After replacing the battery, I find my alarm comes on. But not the horn. Just the flashing lights, and you can hear the "click" sound as the lights flash from around the dash. I know there is supposed to be that emergency override button but I couldn't find one. Maybe removed for some reason? I don't know. But I don't have the fob for it. Anyone know how else to turn the alarm off without the fob or emergency override button? Or maybe where the button would be? I searched under the dash on the drivers side all around but couldn't locate it. Exact location perhaps? Might have been something in the way of where exactly it is. Anything could help. Thanks!
