  1. Just posting some pics of my car
  2. 1991 Subaru Legacy was sitting for 2-3 weeks and would not start. I got the battery jumped and it started and I was just going to drive straight to the shop, but when I got to the end of the road the car shut off and would not start again. Also prior to it sitting for 2-3 weeks it would start when I left from my residence, but if I drove it somewhere else and tried to start it again then it would not start. I have the following details: $1,500 worth of work done on it in 2015 including O2 sensor, ECM, fuel pump replacement, and new battery. The battery should still be under warranty. The car has an after market digital CD/cassette player, so I m not sure if that draws more energy than the car can handle. Also until recently one of the doors would not close completely and a little red light would be on constantly to indicate that the door was not closed. I m not sure if this light could have slowly been draining the battery/alternator or if this is even an issue. My question is based on the vehicle starting but not staying started, is this likely a problem with the alternator? Do I need a new one or could the current one be repaired? Cost estimate? I will have to get it towed to the shop because obviously it can t be driven in its current state, but I would just like to have an idea of what may be wrong and what would be the cheapest route since I have already spent so much money on the vehicle.
  3. Hello I am a newbie that loves working on his new 1985 Subaru GL Wagon. I am wondering if any of you can tell me how hard it is or if there are any special tricks to changing a water pump. The Mechanic I took it to said it was leaking in multiple places and was wanted 450 to change it. Considering I bought it for $500 I figure I should do it myself. If you have any info on changing the pump, or any manuals for the 85 GL it would be hugely appreciated. Thank you, Dewey
  4. Hello, I have a 97 Legacy Wagon that they harmonic balancer has become loose on. It will no longer keep the belts on for power steering and alternator. So therefore I can not drive it to work. I think the bolt is not just loose and assume it is a bigger issue. What could be the problem? And will buying a replacing just the pulley fix this issue? Thanks for the help.
  5. anyone know what the two blank spots on the LHS of the steering wheel are for on a 99 legacy wagon? the blank spot closest to the steering wheel actually has a thing right there for something to plug into, while the blank spot closest the door is strait empty. i wanna know what is supposed to plug into that piece. thanks!
  6. Hello I recently bought a 1985 GL Wagon 1.8 liter 5 speed. It has 120k miles on it. I know it has some good life left in it. The previous owner didn't keep it up very well. I don't have the service manual for this car. I decided to change the transmission fluid and the oil and filter, along with the starter distributer cap, plugs and wires. The guy at the auto parts store looked up the amount of fluids needed for the oil and transmission fluid. He stated that the transmission needed 7 quarts and the engine needed four quarts. After finishing all other projects. And filling the fluids up,... It definitely seems to be way too much in fluid amounts with the oil and tranny fluid. If anyone can give me the recommended amounts for tranny fluid and oil that would be great. The oil is easy I guess, just fill it up till it's right on the dipstick. By the way the tranny fluid looked really bad as well as the oil. Thank you, Chris
  7. im tring to find out if any other year distribitors will work fo my 84 gl wagon 4wd im sure the pick up is bad it runs for like 7 mins till it gets hot then quits. after that i have no spark. any help would be great
  8. What parts do I need to get to do a rear disc brake conversion on my 88 GL 4wd wagon? Any input would be helpful. Also is there a thread somewhere on how to drill hubs to the 4 x 114.3 pattern?
  9. Hey everyone, excited to be apart of this community. Looking forward to finding information to do my build, also to meet new people, being help and further along providing assistance to fellow members. Here's my wagon.
  10. Greetings from the southern Sierra mountain in California. I bought my '85 Suby from an elderly gentleman for $400. Since then, it's been down muddy mountain trails, through streams, and passing brand new cars in blizzards. I've never seen a model like mine, with 4 headlights, so i'm not sure if it's been modified or is just a rare make. It still passes CA strict smog laws, and has only needed an engine head replacement 8 years ago for major fixes. I still amaze people with the spare tire sitting on top of the engine, and 4wd on-call buttton.
  11. I have just purchased a 1988 subaru GL wagon dual range 5 speed transmission SPFI ea-85 with 162,xxx for $500 little to no rust. everything works except when you switch into four wheel high or low the car will drive but once you start accelerating a nasty shake / shudders start shaking the whole car and when you try and turn the whole car locks up completely. It drives in 2 wheel perfectly fine except at high speeds (50+) the car will vibrate from the rear differential a little bit. My guess is that the rear differential is not functioning properly somehow. I also have a 92 legacy that has 140,xxx that I want to swap the ej22 into the gl. If someone could help me diagnose the problem with the four wheel that would be much appreciated and if someone could point me towards a how to ej swap thread and tell what all I might need that would also be beyond helpful.
  12. I have a 91 Legacy wagon which has been having startup issues on occasion. I usually manage to get it started by attempting to start it with my foot on the gas pedal, but when it starts it usually sputters for awhile and often turns off again. When I just turn the key in the ignition prior to starting it, I always hear a humming sound, and I wonder if that sound is related to or indicates the fuel pump may be going bad? Also whenever I drive the car it often has trouble accelerating especially after I've stopped at a stoplight. I just had the oil changed and had the fuel filter replaced and fuel system cleaned at the shop 3 days ago, and they also did diagnostics. But they didn't say anything about a faulty fuel pump, or maybe they didn't even consider it. Either way this all cost me over $300 already, so I just wonder if anyone has any ideas or suggestions before I spend any more money. Thank you all.
  13. I have a 1982 Subaru gl and I am just wondering what years are compatible for basically the whole driver side. Bumper, Fender, both doors and rear quarter panel. thanks for the help gents.
  14. The horn in my red 1986 Subaru GL wagon has never worked, ever since I purchased it years ago. I have put up with it for a while, but the need to... communicate... with other drivers is no longer able to be ignored. I have checked fuses: They are in good order. I have not dug into the wiring too much: However everything appears to be plugged in as it should. I took apart the steering wheel's horn button/pad: I did not see anything out of the ordinary, and it appears the horn pad makes contact as it should. Taking the horn wire that comes out of the hub and grounding it to metal does nothing. In other cars I have tried this on, it would make the horn sound. The only thing I sourced up from searching was this thread: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/18736-two-problems-with-subaru-leone-1800-gl/ thealleyboy and MilesFox's posts in that thread were most helpful to my case, but only a tad. Has anyone else dealt with this issue before? Here is a pic of my wheel for reference: Thank you in advance for any advice.
  15. Hey guys, So I found a 1987 Gl10 Turbo Wagon for $1000 (he says that the price is negotiable though) in pretty good shape for being 28 years old. For a first car I'm looking for something that I can daily drive to school (engineering student) and handle Utah winters, and I'm really digging this car so far, but I want to make sure it's the right choice. here's the ad: http://www.ksl.com/auto/listing/2383534?ad_cid=18 The good: +138,000 original miles +5 speed manual +paint and body are MINT (some rust and small dent in front, but that's it) +power everything still works, except the auto lock doors (even the power sunroof!) +interior is decent to good (no ripping) +Heat/AC works perfectly The bad: -clutch needs to be replaced (slips in 4th and 5th, but still drivable). -needs new tires -Turbo? I hear turbo ea82s have reliability problems? Anyone know what I should expect? (though turbo's are fun!) So yeah. Should I go for it? I'm really digging this car, and I have no problem getting dirty and working on the thing, but as a student, I have a limited amount of free time (and money!). I hear it's not too hard to lift the engine and replace the clutch, which would be much cheaper, but I have little experience working on cars, though I know my way around tools. What's your guys' experiences with GLs? Thanks, Matt
  16. So the interior of my GL that I'm restoring smells like a old wet gym sock, IT'S GREAT! But all great things must end and I would like to find a fresh carpet. Thing is, my usually go to places either come up with universal carpet kits or nothing at all and worse yet, tell me my car doesn't exist. So I know someone at some point here must of sourced one before. Has anyone been able to find a pre-molded carpet for a EA82 wagon before? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
  17. So a friend sent me the link to a CL ad and I had a buddy pick it up for me while I was across country. I guess I will find out what I bought when I get home in a few weeks. All I know is the Seller claims it needs ALOT of work. Here are the CL ad photos for now.
  18. My 98 Legacy has a constant ringing noise coming from the engine, which becomes louder as the RPMs rise. I've attached a video of the noise at idle; I suspect it is from the pulleys, but I'd like a second opinion. is the video.
  19. I am interested to know what the value would be on a Subaru DL wagon such as this. The pictures show there are some rust issues, but not quite sure what would be a good price on a car of this condition. Any help would be appreciated. http://www.ebay.com/itm/171848541479?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&fromMakeTrack=true Thanks, Ryan
  20. Hey All, I am in need of some help from someone who knows their way around an older Subaru. I purchased a 1990 Subaru Legacy Wagon with only 86k miles on it from a single owner. The car is in great shape and I felt was an excellent buy. After putting a few thousand miles on it Ive noticed that the cars temperature seems to go a bit above the half way mark at times. Before say a month ago the temperature gauge lived between completely cold and mid way. I dont know if this is an indicator of a head gasket problem or if this could be the radiator. Ive heard the 2.2 4cyl 5-speed manual engines in that year dont have the head problems as much as the others do. Please help!!
  21. Hello all, I am new here (to Subarus, this forum, and the like) and I'd like to share this saga of "Drivin' Miss Subie" which comes to you in the form of a 1991 Loyale Wagon. She's a 5-speed, 4WD, with ~250k miles on her, and she runs, albeit poorly. Interior is fairly decent considering her age, and the body is ~85% solid. Yes, it was a bargain buy ($300). PO got rear-ended, so it was salvage titled, which means I can't use the rear hatch. Her main downfall: She stalls at idle. I'm trying to figure out the problem, and then I will go from there. I was actually shocked that it came with power windows and A/C. Here she is currently in my driveway as we speak:
  22. So I've put up a go fund me and am hoping to get help from you guys! I am turning my 83 wagon into a rally car. Right now I am working on the weight reductions and the suspension. I'm hoping to participate in some races next spring and summer. It would be awesome to have a USMB rally car to get some attention to the forums. If it's allowed I will post the link below. Please tell me if it needs to be removed due to rules. If anyone could lend some time helping me with various things (Ideas on suspension, Ideas on weight reductions and drivetrains that might work with a higher powered EA81. I plan on getting most of the forged parts from RAM. Not sure about which turbo I want but will figure that out when the motor part of the build comes along. Here's the link if anyone wants to throw a few bucks towards this build. Any help at all... Even encouragement is greatly appreciated. http://www.gofundme.com/baja500racecar Any suggestions for body and paint? I am going to research bed liners and possible cover it in a rhino line... If it won't effect air and weight.
  23. SO I have been working to get my 91 4wd pushbutton MT loyale up to 100% mechanically.... or as close as I can. I get a grinding noise somewhere in the rear half when I get down a little more on the skinny fun pedal, or am going up a steeper hill. Pretty much anytime the rear end would "sink" due to acceleration or a hill. the sound is the same weather im going 15 up a hill, or accelerating through 55mph. so it does not change with speed. It can happen over speed bumps, but is not struts due to it being a constant grind up hills. Now, the grinding sounds similar to really squeaky struts, but it is far to constant to be struts. Ive had it up on a lift and did a mild look over when i was changing the oil. but not digging to deep. Possibly related to the issue but maybe not, If I am cursing at speed and give it a lot of gas quickly there is a clunk in the rear end. I thought it might just be the stowage compartment clanking. When I engage 4wd and punch the gas, the clunk goes away. I'm really not sure what it could be, Just seeing if anyone has had experience with this problem.
  24. Finally starting my build page. About a month ago I moved and was in need of a commuter car. I am driving around 400 miles just to work and back. My Tacoma was just costing to much. So I picked up a 1991 Loyale Wagon. It has just under 200,000 miles, five speed 4WD, and oh boy it is in rough shape. When I got it the pass front wheel bearing was toast, the cv was near gone, the passenger door doesn't open, mild rust here and there, and the only clear coat on the entire car is under the roof rack. That is just the main obvious issues, But I fell in love. For some reason the name "The Burner" felt so right. Now that I actually have a garage, I can now get this Loyale to tip top shape. My quick basic plan isssssssssss 1. Mechanially runs perfect 2. Re do Interior top to bottom (add stereo in the process) 3. Exterior (paint and what not) Before I started this build page I have replaced the front passenger wheel bearings, right front half shalft, front break job, basic tune up, scrubbed the grime off the steering wheel, and replace the wiper blades. I still have a Lot of work, But i am excited to see the transformation
  25. Yikes! I stopped to fill a low tire Tuesday morning, leaving my car running due to the cold weather. After filling the tire I got back in my 1995 Impreza Wagon and as I was about to pull away i noticed a distinct smell, like burnt plastic and fire. Then I saw the white smoke around my hands and the steering wheel. Holy Crap! I parked immediately and turned the thing off! I jumped out and popped the hood just to see if any smoke was coming from underneath. Nothing. Got back in the car and could smell that very bad smell. Luckily I'm no idiot. I called AAA for a tow and my Dad for advice. Two days later and my car is sitting at the mechanics. He said he found a 'melted reistor' near the steering wheel area. He then refferred to this as an 'airbag resistor'. I did my best to search this forum and some of the other forums on this site and couldn't find anything to match up. I have not been able to go see the car now that the mechanic has the dash open. I will tomorrow and take some photos. My question is, does anyone know what this could be? If there are other threads that might help feel free to point me to them.
