  1. Some help needed again... 1989 XT6, FWD, 4EAT automatic transmission. When I start the engine, the Power indicator light on the dash blinks 16 times and the idle speed is very low. I'll read deep into the FSMs and see about retrieving any codes, but I don't see any at the ECM in the trunk. Maybe there is a clue in the transmission section. I've investigated a bit and found that there may be a bad solenoid on the transmission. Along with the 16 blinks, the engine idles very low. Could this be a simple fix, add transmission fluid, or is this a sign of a bad solenoid, and which one, C? Recently I've posted various sensor replacements, CTS, TPS, MAF and IACV, all of which are now working properly. I'm getting close to selling this temperamental beauty and look for a newer and more daily drivable Subaru, the wife needs a car soon. Any help is appreciated!
  2. Need some help after our actions did not fix the problem: Outback got an oil change and check before a trip in September, at 135K miles. For the first time I experienced the car not shifting into lower gear when accelerating up a hill on the highway. The RPMs went up, but no downshift. I slowed down and the problem did not return. Two weeks later the car died at idle in drive on an incline and threw code p0028. Car started idling rough at a stop or when in reverse at very low speed. Sometimes it died but restarted fine. We found some moisture in the spark plugs and tried removing. Ended up breaking a wire so we took it to our trusted mechanic for new plugs and wires. After that the car performed well for two weeks until last week on a trip in the foothills. Threw the p0028 code while on a straightaway, but the idle problem did not return like before. We cleared the code and chose to install a new variable valve timing control solenoid. We also cleaned the switch. The code is gone but the car is again idling rough and sometimes dying at idle in drive or reverse. Today we put in a new switch. Husband confirmed switch and solenoid are opening properly. But no change to our rough idle. We drove it around the block, it did not throw a code. What is our next best option?
  3. Okay, everybody, so I'm having another problem with my '92 Loyale. It was running fine with the new battery and I got the shim for the loose terminal and that was the fix. But now it struggled to start a couple nights ago, and it's been really, really cold out in my area. It gave a good crank and tried to start but died. I tried again and the same thing happened. Tried once more and that time I pumped the gas while I cranked engine and it got started then, but the vehicle vibrated a little and the idle did not start out high but very low. Also there's been a squealing noise too, like maybe a belt on one of the pulleys? Once the engine warms up the squeal usually stops. After that I was able to start the car fine each time but there's this problem of it idling really low. Any answers, guys? Could it be the arctic weather that caused the problem? Too much cold weather affecting the engine and components? And what can I do about it? I don't think the timing slipped because I got that fixed already last year, brand new timing belt and new plugs and distributor. I saw one of Scotty Kilmer's vids about using an idle throttle cleaner that could solve the problem, but what does my situation seem like to you guys?
  4. Vehicle is a 2002 Subaru Legacy Wagon 2.5 SOHC 5 speed. 220,000 miles. Problem would only occur after 30+ minutes of driving on a hot day, as of last week. Now it occurs as soon as engine is warmed up. Plugs, wires, fuel filter, and a million other things have all been replaced in the past couple thousand miles. Once the car warms up, I'm getting a terribly low idle and hesitation/jolting so bad it isn't even road worthy. It's so bad that I can barely get it into 1st gear sometimes. The car won't cut out, but seems pretty close to it most of the time. At idle, it revs up just fine. Could this be a TPS issue? Injectors? Fuel pressure? I don't see why it would only do this once fully warmed, it runs fine (seems a little slower than usual) until it warms up. There is no check engine light. In the past, it threw a code for IAC valve, but it went away once I cleaned it. Thanks guys.
  5. Hello, Folks this is my first post on this group. I am having issues with my 02 forester which is a really low idle around 500rpm and will not go up beyond that even when you give it throttle. It seems like when you step on it gets a little rougher and it almost stalls. I recently redid head gaskets and had my friend time the engine for me who is a tech. The diagnostics I have done so far is swapping the coil pack which the original coil pack reads a resistance of 0 when you test pin 1 and 2 also 2 and 4. Also we checked on the throttle position percentage via a smartphone OBD app and it seems to be reading and also cleaned the IACV and swapped it with a good one. All these things seem to not change the idle or engine speed at all. Lastly we had it have a CEL only one time with a p1510 and P1516 but this only happened once and the car was sitting for only a month. Next items I am going to check is the fuel pressure and the injectors. Is there anyone that had this issue before or can help me pinpoint the issue? Also on a second note we swapped out the motor from an Automatic car and this is a manual car.
  6. I finally got my car running, and took it for a drive. Here's what my problem is: * My car idles really low, and it will die unless I give it gas. * Sometimes, when I press the gas pedal, it will stick. * It backfires at higher rpms when I'm cruising. * The ECS light is on. I've replaced the spark plug wires and both the main and secondary fuel filters. What should I check next?
  7. I inadvertently left the ignition on while cleaning the car, and after 18 hours it was seriously dead. Got it started with a jump (yes red to red, black to black) which did take some cranking and fussing. Since then it is hard to start, idling way low (loping between almost zero and 250 rpm), stumbles, feels like it's hovering on the edge of a stall in traffic, and hesitates when driving. We live in Kailua-Kona village, a no highway beach town, so all subsequent trips have been short, slow, and in traffic. I've driven it on sport mode and kept the rpms up in the high threes and low fours a couple of trips, and I've opend the gas ca and resecured it. Has it forgotten how to Subaru? I'm thiking the computer needs to be retrained? Best way? Highway trip, reprogram, has something been damaged? :-(

  9. Hello! I am brand new to the forum and admittedly not too knowledgeable about cars. We have 99 Forester with about 120,000 miles. It had check engine light on for a long time - our mechanic stated it was an evaporative emissions code, not necessary to fix and very pricey, so we drove it like that for a couple of years. Exhaust system also required work for a long time. We finally did these repairs just in the last couple of days - we found a different, affordable mechanic, who seems very trustworthy. We found them after we bought an Outback from them a year ago. The car has always gone through a lot of oil, too, and we were not always super good about keeping it up. Sometimes we would check it and it wouldn't register on the dipstick at all. It doesn't have any leaks though, just eats oil. A couple days before taking it in to the mechanic to be fixed, it did something new. It started idling really low. It would start up well, even in the subzero temperatures we are having here in Minnesota, and then after warming up and driving it for a while, it would start to idle low, around 500 rpms, and feel like it was going to die. The air blowing out of the heater would also really slow down, and lights would dim a bit until it got more gas. We mentioned this when we brought in. Mechanic says they checked the alternator and the battery and both were OK. They replaced the MAF sensor and the front O2 sensor. They didn't experience the symptom while it was in their care and sent it home with us. However, it is definitely still occurring. Having just invested all this money in a car we thought was on its last leg is kind of a bummer. Any thoughts?
  10. So a little while ago I was having idling issues on my legacy and it would stall out on occasion. However it I found out there was a rubber plug missing on the casing for one of the air filters, I sealed the hole (why they put the hole there in the first place I don't know) and it stop stalling and now works fine, however it still bothers me that it idles really low, only about 200 rpm, and somewhat rough too when the engine warms up. It doesn't cause any issues however its clearly to low, so im thinking about cleaning the idle air controller (there's about 172k miles on the car) and sooner or later getting new plugs and tips for i, will this up the idle and make it smoother? any other suggestions?
  11. So i bought this car last weekend and there were no problems with it. it sat for a few days while it waited to get registered. I drove it a little the day it got registered and the next day it started having problems. It drives great with 172,xxx miles on it but it has a really slow rough idle. it idles between 200 and 250 rpm and the interior and dash lights flicker and it shakes. it has stalled out twice at red lights but i had no problem starting it up again. PLEASE HELP. I have no idea whats wrong with it but I have very little money to spend on fixing it. All input is appreciated im feeling like this right now.
