  1. Hi all, I'll most likely be purchasing a forester (2006-2008) or OBW (2005-2009) soon from an auto-auction. 5-speed much preferred. Plan is to spend about $500-$750 for something with decent interior, okay exterior, and something under 150k miles. Right now, I'm assuming that anything I get will have leaking Headgasket(s), and will have been run low on oil. Some of the auction sites have videos of the motors running, and they often have rod-knock. I need a dependable vehicle for the next 5 years, and I'm also pretty broke being in grad school. I can only afford something in the $5k-6k range, and everything I find is hyper-mileage and/or : leaking HGs, bad power steering pumps, leaking rocker covers, etc. AND people don't want less than they're asking. Just looked at an '06 Baja with 180k on it... guy said it was mint. They wanted $7k for 4 miss-matched bald tires, air-filled ps pump, leaking HG, leaking rear main, +1 quart overfilled oil, and a sticker over the check engine light that said (and I'm not joking) "Prayer helps". I don't want to be doing a lot of time-consuming general maintenance while I travel to/from my clinical observations, so I'm considering purchasing a JDM-imported engine, a remanufactured engine, or an oem subaru shortblock... Questions: If I purchase a JDM import, do I put new gaskets in right away before putting in the car? They're supposed to have 50-60k miles on them... Should valves be looked at? Costs about $2500 There's a store on ebay selling a remanufactured long block for $3400, and a 3-year unlimited mile warranty. They have 100% feedback as well. Is that a decent price? This is for the stock EJ253 block. Should I get a different block? EJ257? I'm not looking for anything but a leak-free, dependable engine/drivetrain. What headgaskets should I use to replace the SOHC paper-like-gaskets? 04-06 STI MLS headgaskets? I have a low-mile 5mt to go with the car. Even if the body is messed up a bit, as long as the drivetrain is solid, that's what i really care about. Any thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks guys. Greg
  2. Hello all, I recently purchased a '16 Forester that had been in an accident and was totaled. The car was repaired and inspected by the State Police and now has a Massachusetts "reconstructed" title. The Forester has 11,000 miles on it, and lately I notice a bad whining sound from the passenger side front wheel -- sounds like a bad wheel bearing. My question is, if I bring this to my local dealer for repair, are they going to look up the Carfax or title history and say to me, "This car was totaled, your mechanical warranty is void"? Or will they cover mechanical problems under the warranty? I would love some feedback from anyone whose been in a similar situation. FWIW, I find the local dealer to be a real pain in the neck. Other than the wheel bearing, the car runs and drives as new. Thanks in advance, Jeff in Boston
  3. Hi all, I purchased a certified pre-owned Subaru Impreza with 40,000 miles a month ago. I've only put 500 miles on it and just noticed that it seems like it hunts for gears at times and there is a distinct, but very quiet, whining coming from the front dif area. It is my understanding that Subaru's manufacturer warranty transfers automatically? I also believe the front dif should be covered by the powertrain warranty, which I should still be covered by? Looks like the previous owner may have had an issue with this as in digging through the glove box and owners manual I found he had folded up two (unmarked/un-filled) appeal forms and an envelope pre-addressed to Subaru of America. I work odd hours and am basically chained to my desk until late this evening, after my dealer closes. (I did already call them and notify them that I am having a problem, which may have been a mistake as I won't be able to bring the vehicle in today..... :X) I'm thinking I will drop the car off the day after Christmas since they are closed Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Is this okay for me to wait on, from a warranty standpoint? I'm not really that worried about the dif, it's a very faint whine but I'd rather nip it in the bud. I also have a service contract that I purchased through the dealer, so don't want to mess anything up with that either. Not sure if waiting to bring the car in voids anything? Any input is appreciated! I've always bought super old Subies in the past so I've never had a warranty!
  4. Happy 4th of July holiday weekend to everyone! I have a 2003 3.0L H6 Outback VDC in excellent condition. At about 84,500 miles in 2007/8 I picked up a full set of new Michelin Primacy MXV4 tires, 225/60HR16 98H which Costco said were the best available for this vehicle and Costco offered a warranty to 60K miles. I drive this vehicle much less than the national average, and as of last month June 2013, only added about 30K miles, bringing mileage to 115K. I've always kept the tires properly inflated (measured when hot, 35 front and 34 rear, or cold 33 front and 32 rear) and rotated on time, with the wheels aligned each time. We do most of the driving in the temperate Silicon Valley/SF Bay Area. I just did a tire rotation at Costco, followed by an alignment at Firestone as part of a lifetime alignment. During the alignment the technician pointed out some cracking along the outside edges of the tread, though there was still plenty of tread depth left. I then went back to Costco and asked about this. They said they now typically warrant their tires for 60,000 miles or 5 years (used to be 6 years), whichever comes first. They said that since I've just crossed 5 years, but have only driven half of the 60K mile warranty, they offered to replace the set now with a brand new set for 50% off the regularly $133.99/tire price, with free installation. They said that the Primacy MXV4 225/60HR16 98H is still the best tire they have for this model car. A) Is it possible that the warranty was 6 years at the time of my original purchase, as the Costco rep noted they recently changed to 5 years, in which case they would have to replace the tires free? How would I find out what the policy was back then? I keep all my records but can't find the tire purchase receipt. What do you think of these tires, and do you recommend any others instead? Note that I have never had to use them, but want the ability to be able to fit a light chain set for harsh snow conditions if ever needed. If it's a tire Costco doesn't carry, I of course don't get the 50% off the cost and free installation. I like to always keep quality tires on my vehicle ever since driving my old Volvo in college in light rain I did a 180 turn around a bend at only 25-30mph on used just fine but nothigh performance tires. And that wasn't the first rain of the season surfacing oil. I immediately got the best tires I could after that and it never happened again. Thanks for your advice and have a great weekend.
  5. Hi all, I am poised to buy a 2003 Forester with only 91,000 miled on it. One previous owner, no accidents, carfax looks great mostly dealer serviced local to where I am buying it from. $6995, with tax and conveyance fee it'll be just shy of $8,000. Dealership did timing belt, waterpump, and head gasket. Tires look new. 1: Would you say go for it? This is my first sube and I'm switching from an '01 camry. I really need a wagon for this summer. I hear these last forever so when I saw one with less than 100,000 miles I pounced on it. 2: Where/how can anyone suggest I get an extended warranty? The dealership is only offering a 60 day warranty. While I consider myself a fairly educated person, I don't know much about buying cars as I've been driving my camry forever- so feel free to point out anything you might consider obvious that I might not have considered yet. I will be making my decision on it very soon, I have paid them to hold the car for a couple days while I come up with the money. A big thanks!
