  1. 2003 Outback Limited EJ25, built for Canada in May of 2002. 165,000 miles. I cleaned and flushed the cooling system in March 2016. Then drained the block, radiator, heater core, etc. and removed the freeze plugs, all hoses, thermostat, temperature sender, etc. to dry the system out. Now ready to install new hoses and Evans coolant plus dozens of other preventative maintenance items. Was at the dealer last week and overheard someone say that it's hard on the head gaskets to let them dry out like that. Do not even think of putting it back together. Replace the head gaskets, guaranteed to have an issue with the head gaskets. I wish I had a chance to engage in the conversation. The head gaskets were replace in April, 2011 around 110,000 miles. It appears they are the Subaru brand. All other parts are Subaru. Have not found any aftermarket parts, including filters on the Outback. Is this a myth, a rumor, or a fact that I should continue deeper into the engine and replace the head gaskets? http://www.evanscoolant.com/ http://www.discountoeparts.com/genuine-subaru-parts
  2. I have a 93 Loyale wagon, 190k miles, 5speed, a/c, heater . . . did I say "heater"? Heater exists physically, but never seems to get hot so I don't know if I can say I have a real heater. Radiator and thermostat were replaced, temp always hovers around 20% of the way up the temp meter when engine is warm, no coolant leaks. Input hose to heater core is too hot to touch and output hose is almost too hot to touch but not much differential so I thought the core fins were congested with dust and dirt (I already tried flushing out the core in both directions and it flowed freely). I removed the heater core and found nothing unusual! I could see daylight through all the fins and hosed water through the pipes in both directions and it flowed freely with nothing but water coming out. So now I'm perplexed and irritated (for doing all that work for nothing). Does anyone have an answer to this problem? I read all the past posts about heater issues and no help there (expect for heater removal tips - thanks). I would like to know about the following possibilities: 1. All the foam around the ducts and heater have deteriorated - would that cause loss of heating? If so, wouldn't the heat still get inside the cabin? 2. How do I replace all that foam? 3. If the heater core passages are clogged, would I still get free flow of water out the pipes? 4. Would soaking the heater core in cleaner make a difference under these circumstances? Any other ideas? I'm at a loss. It's cold out here in the winter time so it's worth it to me to get this repaired.
  3. I have a 2005 stock legacy. The dealership quoted me damn near 1000 dollars to fix my heater core. Unfortunately I can't afford that. It has yet to cause any major problem, temp gauge has been normal, the only thing that's been happening is my window fogs up when the car is off, and when the heater is on it smells like something's burning. I am a 21 year old woman and not terribly familiar with subarus yet, as it's my first, but I need help. Does anyone in the Pacific Northwest (Portland metro area) know of anyone who could fix it for cheaper than a grand?
  4. Ok guys here is my situation. 87 dl wagon fwd 1.8 no turbo. Just put in new heater core, radiator, coolant and still the car has almost no heat. Yes the system has been "burped". Anyone know where I should troubleshoot next or maybe an old or current discussion that talks about this? Also does anyone know off hand where the fresh are vent is located on this car? Thanks.
  5. Hello, I need help to determine the problem with my 2006 outback xt. I recently started seeing a leak under the car, antifreeze smell and windows fogging, reading some the blogs it seems like I have a heater core problem, if you agree with what do you think it costs to fix this issue?? Thanks for your help....
