  1. Hi All...looking for a little help before I likely head to a mechanic soon. 2004 Subaru Outback, Limited 2.5L 4 cylinder 185,000 Miles Purchased at 75,000 in 2009...and I haven't touched the transmission or transmission fluid...I know, I know... When I start the car...idle has a slight sputter. For a split second, it seems it may think about dying...really a hair of a second, then continues on idling. (I'm going to re-verify this tonight because it's the part that doesn't make sense to me). The primary issue is at highway speed. Let's say you let off the gas at 40, 50, 60mph. Coast for a second...then get on the gas again (light or hard), the car doesn't find a gear (assumption based on the feel) and just starts clunkering/jerking around until I manually move the shifter to 3rd. The car rights itself instantly in 3rd...I move back to D and we're mostly ok again...until I let off the gas and get on the gas again. Now today was the first time in drive, while consistently accelerating that it seemed to slip and couldn't maintain the gain, so I put it back in 3rd and all was good. I also got the flashing check engine light today...moved down to 3rd and all was good...CEL went solid instead flashing. This happens at lower speeds as well...just not as pronounced of a feel. I kind of feel I'm on borrowed time with the transmission, right? or am I way off?
  2. Introduction I got the best Subaru mechanic in the world, I met him on this website, I think, but maybe not. Shawn@RetroRoo.com has given me permissions to document my 98 Outback's transmission issues on the condition that I do it well. If I may add a little comedy because Subaru cars are a whole different ballgame compared to a V8 351C, or a 74' Nissan or 6 cyl. 56' International, or 69' Camaro SS 350, or a… Just a whole different ballgame. But I always, always wanted to own an Outback! Long story long two years ago (i know this because I just paid off the twenty five hundred loan) I bought a 98' Outback Legacy Limited because the body was great for the year but the price was more than I wanted to spend, and that would have been okay given I also knew the head gaskets were blown, and like an idiot, AFTER I DO MY RESEARCH AND A WARNING ABOUT A 'CERTIFIED' MECHANIC, I made my first, and last, major f-up. I paid the guy who I bought my Subaru from, who said he was a mechanic, an extra $700 to replace the blown head gaskets. Duh! So'eth my credit card suffers to this day when those heads shortly blew. With my tail between my legs Shawn met me with a head job of epic proportions, but with not much concern. What I discover is a mechanic who uses OEM and NEVER aftermarket engine parts and will not inflate those parts, too much… but will always charge the hourly book for the job and save me a lot of cash in the end. I do not live in in a place are where you can pull an engine and work on it in your garage. I no longer have the tools. I just need a great mechanic. Tomorrow we talk about Code p0740.
  3. Does anyone have instructions or know of a how-to describing the ins and outs of rebuilding an EA82 rear LSD? I think it's about time to give mine a refresh, but I'm not sure which clutch plates to order and a rebuilding guide would be very helpful. I have already tried searching for Datsun-based guides, but didn't find what I was looking for.

  5. Hey guys, I'm new here. I currently have an 01 Legacy GT Limited with about 118k miles on it. Love this car, no mechanical problems at all. However, I've been eyeing a 1995 SVX LSi with 92k miles on it, for $2k. First question, is this a good deal? Exterior and interior look clean, I haven't taken it for a spin yet but the seller doesn't list any mechanical issues. Second question, am I crazy for wanting to get rid of my 01 Legacy for this? Like I said, I love my car, but I want something a little more powerful and sporty. This SVX seems like a good choice for me, because I love having the safety of AWD, but want something with a little more kick. Basically, I plan on buying this car and giving my current Subie to my sister who is currently a broke college student. Is it a bad call for me to get rid of my current ride, for this one? Thanks guys.
  6. Hey all, Here is me and my wife's new family hauler. Now my xterra can finally just be for work. Loving the mpg on the Subaru. We did some minor aesthetic work. Let me know what you guys and gals think!
