  1. Edit I'll be in Eugene OR for Christmas, does anyone have mechanic recommendations my 92 Loyale could use. Stock ea-82 w/ 160k, Dr swap, 2 inch SJR lift, 1.5 sub frame drop. Rear disc. Toyota rear struts with Accord springs. I've done the majority of work myself but just cant do another axle job. Im starting to think its something to do with me and not the axles. I got rebuilds from Marshall at FW Enterprises I'm looking for someone that would appreciate some of the not so stock things about it help me improve the suspension and advise on engine maintenance. I am moving to Denver next summer so I might wait to work with some of the mechanics out there. Seems like there are more options. Thanks
  2. I'm an 09 Forester owner in Las Vegas who needs to do the head gasket job very soon. I would like to do it myself, BUT I really want to take the engine out, and I don't own an engine hoist or engine mount. So there are a few options: 1) Have a mechanic do it - I'd rather not do this option, partly because I want to do it, but also because I don't know of any good Subaru mechanic in the Vegas area (I moved from Colorado). If anyone knows a good mechanic in Vegas I would LOVE to hear about them! 2) Do it myself in the local DIY garage - this option would be expensive, but not nearly as expensive as having the dealership do it. Biggest problem with this is that they charge hourly, so I would be rushed to finish it, and I'd like to take my time (I've never done a head gasket job before). 3) Do it myself after renting/buying an engine hoist and mount. This would work except that I don't have a garage or driveway, so I'd have to take over a friend's. Anyway, if anyone has general advice on doing head gaskets, I'm all ears. If anyone has advice for where to do it in Vegas, I'd be very happy, and if anyone has an engine hoist or mount they'd be willing to rent to me, I'd be VERY happy! Thanks for reading!
  3. I've got a 1987 XT GL-10 Turbo, and need a good tune up, it keeps bogging down after 15 minutes, then I turn it off/on and i pops right back again. Already spent $450 on a new fuel pump, and it didn't do a bit of good, a shop in Schaumburg IL diagnosed it, but still runs the same. Don't want to keep throwing money at it, want to find a mechanic who knows these older cars. Thanks for any suggestions! Chuck.
  4. Brought my son's 1990 Legacy L Wagon to local mechanic because it's been running rough (hard starting, strange idling, stall at red light, etc.) The shop having trouble reading and deciphering all info given by computer because they don't work on vehicles this old often. They thought they narrowed down problem to Engine Temp Sensor, replaced but it didn't help. Now they're saying the ECU probably needs to be replaced. I think I need a second opinion. Long story, short: need a shop in Dallas that has experience with older Subaru's
  5. My Brat is a special one, but it was horribly neglected, abused, and badly repaired. I had been fixing it up when people where I lived turned out to be real lowlives who stole anything they could trade or sell for drugs, and caused an illegal eviction. I ended up homeless, living in a desolate area, and became broken down out there, with nothing close, almost a mile to walk just to get water, 6 miles to walk to get or do anything else, and what aggravates that is that I have Bursitis & Plantar Fascitis in both feet, two bad ankles and one bad knee, which means on hell of a lot of pain and difficulty. Through it all, I have been doing all I can, what little I can, to try to fix and save the Brat with very little luck. One person after another has tried to talk me into abandoning it, but I refuse to. With any luck, I may soon be able to get it started, and find myself in Lake Elsinore, CA. Are there any really gifted Subaru Mechanics or Subaru freaks in that area who could help me fix this Brat and give it the fix-up it so deserves? Thank you.
  6. Hi, I have an 1985 VW Vanagon with a blown engine. I want to swap the engine with a 2.2L Subaru engine . I cant do the job myself, but if there is mechanics living in the Portland, OR area I would love to work out a deal with you! Any feedback would be great!
  7. Hi I'm looking for a recommendation for a mechanic in the southern California, greater Los Angeles area. I have a 94 Subaru Loyale that is in pretty good shape (a little issue with the check engine light), except for the 4wd. When placed into 4wd (manual transmission), the rear wheels lock up. Yelp recommended Raffi Motors, but they didn't think they could help. The dealership won't even touch it, says 'they don't the books' for it. ' I searched the forum but didn't find any relevant threads, if there is one already, please point me to it, otherwise, any suggestions? Thanks
  8. Hello all, I've had my 2006 Impreza for about four years now. Since I've owned it, I've gone through several headlights (about three per year; alternating passenger and driver). I also go through oil like a hole in the head, despite having all head gaskets replaced about two years ago. Additionally, my emergency brake light has not gone off in about 6 months. What gives?! Are these common problems with my make and model?
  9. Hey guys, I'm new to this and am hoping that I am posting in the right place. After a 6 long years in College and too much time and money spent, I have started taking Automotive Technician classes at a local community college. I absolutely love it and I really want to start a career as soon as I can. However, I have no experience besides in the classroom (there is a garage too). I know I'll have to start at the bottom (oil changes, changing light bulbs, cleaning the shop, ect.), but I'm trying to see how long I will have to be at that level. Ideally, I would like to become at an apprentice, but I haven't had much luck getting in contact with service/shop managers. I talked to one at a Mercedes dealership, very briefly, and he said that he wouldn't put me on his oil change team until I spent about a year basically detailing cars there, and then it would be another year or longer doing oil changes before I would actually get to work in the shop with a mechanic. I have always liked Subaru's and am very interested in starting a career there. I have left messages/emails with a few managers, but have not heard anything (its been about a week). Does anyone have any suggestions of where to begin? What things are shop managers looking for in entry level mechanics that could help me stand out? If you work in a shop, how did you start out? If it helps, I just turned 24, I have a very strong work ethic, determined, kinesthetic learner, not afraid to ask questions, want to get my hands dirty, and catch on to things very quickly. Sorry for going on and on. Pretty much all of my friends and family have desk jobs so I'm kinda on my own in this hunt. Thanks in advance for all your help.
  10. Bought my daughter an 03 Legacy and would like to find a quality subaru mechanic in the Dayton Ohio area. Can someone recommend one please? Thanks
  11. hi Im an newbie to the forum that is need of a mechanic to work on my subaru loyale 1990. I think i have a cam shaft oil leak and im thinking of replacing my ERG solenoid myself. thank you in head of time for all your help michael
  12. I have a 2005 stock legacy. The dealership quoted me damn near 1000 dollars to fix my heater core. Unfortunately I can't afford that. It has yet to cause any major problem, temp gauge has been normal, the only thing that's been happening is my window fogs up when the car is off, and when the heater is on it smells like something's burning. I am a 21 year old woman and not terribly familiar with subarus yet, as it's my first, but I need help. Does anyone in the Pacific Northwest (Portland metro area) know of anyone who could fix it for cheaper than a grand?
  13. Hi all, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I'm trying to find a good mechanic in the Raleigh/Durham/Cary area to do a head gasket job on my 97 outback. I took it to a dealer who just tried to get me to trade it in, so I want to find someone who wants to repair the car, not just sell me a new one. Any recommendations?
