  1. ---- 1999 Subaru Legacy Outback 2.5L H4 AWD Automatic ---- Hey all!! So I'm painfully aware of how little power the EJ25D has and I want to lift the car to have at least 8.5" of ground clearance, 9-9.5" would be awesome however I'm worried about losing torque and power with bigger tires. I've mostly seen good lifts regarding the H6 or other slightly more powerful engines and they've gone up to 29"or 32" tires with no problem. I'm not rock crawling with this thing, I just want to get to some cool off the beaten trail camping spots, and my buddies stock 2017 wrangler had 8.3" of clearance, which handled very well on the trail I'm using as a gauge for the lift. but obviously the jeep has amazing approach, break over and departure angles and ill fix that issue later. I just want to know what my sweet spot is regarding things like spacers, struts, bigger tires and ground clearance as it relates to me having the clearance to get over obstacles and enough power to get over it without having to take a huge running start and redline my engine. I don't want to have to winch myself through a trail. should i be worried or is my engine powerful enough to take 29" tires?
  2. ---- 1999 Subaru Legacy Outback 2.5L H4 AWD Automatic ---- Hey all!! This is a continuation of my dads car that sat for 2 years outside in Montana. Just looking for pointers as I things here and there. Just this past weekend I finally started the car! Good news is that it runs pretty darn good considering what its been through. What I've done so far: - Changed the valve cover gaskets, spark plug gaskets, grommets for the bolts. - Spark plugs - Oil and Oil filter - Thermostat, Radiator cap and coolant. - Drained old fuel and added new fuel So after 2 years she started up and ran fine, fans kicked on and I burped the system for bit then capped it off and drove it around the block a few times. Everything feels pretty good, lots of power (for 160Hp that is), breaks work but need to be changed, power steering squeaks a tad when fully locked out to either side. Couple issues. 1. When shifting from Park into reverse, there is a bit of a lunge or soft clunk and you can definitely feel the car shake a bit. When driving through the gears its good but could be a little smoother. So I'm not sure what is all to be concerned with there. 2. I was test driving and I noticed the temp gauge started to move a tad bit past the middle so I drove back a 1/4 mile and parked it and saw a trail of me dripping coolant all around the apartment complex. Popped the hood and found the upper radiator hose spraying coolant out the side. I grabbed the hose and it came right off and there was a piece of the upper radiator port broken off inside the hose and I squeezed the hose and the plastic part of the port stuck in there snapped so it was very brittle and from my memory of when it was overheating 2 years ago in Montana, that hose was spewing coolant. so time for a new radiator. Any precautions I should take when swapping the radiator out seeing as how there was broken pieces in the hose and I'm worried some may have gotten in the engine? however It seemed fine while driving back other than I noticed the temp gauge rising. and should I go OEM with the new radiator? they are currently like $300
  3. --- 1999 Subaru Legacy Outback 2.5L H4 DOHC 4EAT AWD --- Hey All!! I've looked through forums and other threads but cant find what I need. I might have to do an engine swap here soon depending on whether or not this engine is worth fixing. I really want to lift this thing about 1.5-2 inches and go 1 size up in tire size from 205/70/R15 to ---> 215/75/R15 My Goal is for it to be a good camping vehicle that can try to keep up with my buddies jeep. If I'm going to do an engine swap id like to have enough power to accomplish this goal without it being underpowered after the lift plus camping gear and full size spare etc... I want an easy swap, something that's pretty plug and play hopefully around 10-15 hours of labor. Im pricing out having a shop just do it for me but I am pretty mechanically inclined and I'm quite sure I could swap an engine myself with the proper tools and meticulous labeling and organizing of all the wires hoses and other stuff. For someone who has never even come close to swapping an engine, however I have changed spark plugs, distributor and a thermostat, I Imagine it would be easier to swap an engine with no experience than say replacing head gaskets with no experience, but again I have no clue, I just feel like it would be a bit less advanced to swap a intact engine and just hook up some hoses wires and bolts etc.. Let me know if I should just stop this line of reasoning and leave it to the pros or not haha. But other than that what engine would be the best option for what I want to do. Hopefully plug and play enough that it doesn't cost too many shop hours or plug and play enough for me to do it if yall think that's a good idea.
  4. ---- 1999 Subaru Legacy Outback 2.5L H4 AWD Automatic ---- Hey all!! This is a car that sat for 2 years outside in Montana and its my camper project. To be clear I haven't started this car in 2 years. I'm taking every preventative measure that I know of before I start this thing so I don't cause any extra damage. I was the last person to drive it 2 years ago and it was overheating a bit (or the gauge was saying it was), bubbles coming up through the overflow tank, we only drove it about 2-3 miles pulling off every few hundred feet to let it cool down and pour water in the radiator since its all we had. without having turned it on yet the head gaskets appear to be in tact and they were changed to MLS about 3 years ago, so I certainly hope I haven't blown anything from that small drive. Nothing crazy happened that I could tell, no loss of power or anything abnormal while I was driving it all seemed normal other than bubbles coming up through the overflow reservoir.Anyway my goal is to not damage anything else when I turn it on. When I changed the oil it was not milky and showed no signs of coolant mixing with the oil, it looked like normal oil and I don't quite know if I can say that that means I didn't blow a gasket so if anyone could tell me what else I should be worried about and from a visual inspection, the Valve/Rocker cover gaskets seemed to be dripping oil or maybe it dripped from somewhere else I'm not sure but again I'm taking every precaution I can other than super expensive overly involved repairs like a water pump, timing belt and head gaskets.other than advice for my general goal of getting this thing running without extra issues or at least turn it on and have it running well enough that I can identify bigger issues that require me taking it into the pros, I need help with the replacement of these valve/rocker cover gaskets.I am changing these valve/rocker cover gaskets, grommets and bushings out along with the spark plugs since ill be down there anyway. The owner service manual says I should put "fluid packing sealant" on the corners of the semi circular part of the covers and a couple other places. I have no clue what an appropriate amount of sealant is, and I'm not confident enough that the diagram from the service manual shows all of the right spots. So if someone could help me out and maybe provide a thread, video or personal advice on how to do this properly.Other precautions I'm taking before turning the key for the first time in 2 years (please help me add to the list or let me know what steps to do something properly:1. Oil change and oil filter change2. Drain old fuel from gas tank3. Drain old coolant and add new, as well as bleed system of air with radiator funnel kit.4. OEM thermostat replacement5. Replace spark plugs.6. Fogging oil sprayed in cylinders while spark plugs are out.Tell me what I'm missing and feel free to ask me to clarify anything I left out
  5. Hey all! ---1999 Subaru Legacy Outback 2.5--- Just curious about getting a center or rear differential that I can lock and unlock.I know its a good move to improve off-road capabilities however I am concerned about additional damage I might be doing to the vehicle.Should I be worried about potentially breaking or wearing down parts faster due to the diff lock? If so which parts should I keep an eye on, keep a back up of, or upgrade ahead of time? to avoid being towed home after breaking something I could have upograded or prepared better for.
  6. Hey all!!This is a continuation of my 1999 Outback camper project.I want to raise the overall ground clearance by 1"-1.5" inches, whether that is achieved by Tires, struts, springs or spacers im not sure yet and recommendations are welcome.I also want to increase approach and departure angles by adding tube bumpers and a winch down the road.My goal is to have this vehicle be ready for everything, to me this means that i want some practical back up gear to repair things that break mechanically, Extra coolant, extra motor oil, full size spare, portable battery jumper the list goes on.I want to know what are the most common failure points when offroading this old wagon? I want to have a back up tucked away just in case I ever break a tie rod or control arm or if something goes wrong in the engine.I dont have a good idea of what would be the most common failure points are and id rather not carry a backup of every piece that would go wrong but if i can have some practical backups to anticipate breaks it would be nice that if i ever snap a "this" or break a "that" i can replace it with an onboard back up parts that i have stowed away.please let me know what are things i can practically keep onboard for that inevitable "rainy" day where I bent a control arm or something...
  7. Well, I promised my wife I wouldn't go all OCD with these old subies, but I just couldn't resist. I'm *just* about finished with all the major work on the DL sedan I picked up 2 months ago so I figured she might just forgive me (you know what they say about permission and forgiveness). This is going to be a major restoration/rebuild. I intend to touch every nut and bolt on the car, take her down to a bare metal shell and build it all up again. Might be a while before the actual work starts since I have a few other projects that I've committed to that must be taken care of first (62 Continental, 63 C-10 and an Indianapolis 500 pace car vette). So while it may be a bit, I wanted to share a pic of this little gem and start the documentation process here. I'm sure I'll be scouring this forum (along with any other resources I can find) to source parts in the near future. Mechanically a mess, but very good bones and almost no rust. I suppose the purple would be ok, living in Louisiana and all, but she will end up with with a dark green and white paint scheme with brown/tan leather interior.....EVENTUALLY
  8. Hi all, I'm excited to be a new member of this community! Looks like a lot of good info and fun stuff gets shared here. I'm going to document my ride in this thread. My beloved "Beast" - '92 Geo Metro - died a couple weeks ago (transmission) after getting me through two years of high school and three years of college. I thought it would be hard to find anything as practical or as endearing as it was for me - boy was I wrong! Enter Subaru! I am the proud new owner of this 1993 Loyale wagon with 4WD and the 5spd. Only 116,000 miles and in beautiful condition for only $1,500. It's mechanically sound - except for a hole in the muffler and a potentially busted catalytic converter (slight burning smell) - and starts, runs, and shifts like a dream. Old owner changed ball joints, struts, timing belts, battery, engine seals, water pump, fuel pump, and some other little stuff (with documentation ). So the first thing I did was drive it up a mountain on rough, muddy old logging roads, and the 4WD works like a dream even with stock 13 inch all-seasons. I have big plans to turn this into my next Adventuremobile and hope to get to at least 250,000 miles with regular TLC, or at least until autonomous electric vehicles render these fabulous cars functionally obsolete. First things first: I proceeded to take it home and rip out the ancient rotting speakers and the terrible cassette/radio head unit. Here's the plans: Now: I'm going to get new hatch struts - the old ones are pretty weak and future plans necessitate this. Next I'm going to put in a solid sound system. I don't need to wake the neighbors, but I want to be able to hear my low- and mid-range bass and drum tones doing 65 mph with the windows down. Plus, I want all my sound components hidden, out of the way of the Soob's extreme practicality. I'm going to put four of these thin-profile Kicker speakers in the doors, this shallow-mount 8" subwoofer in the liftgate with a custom enclosure - hopefully this isn't too hard/is possible - and hook it all together with this 4-channel Planet Audio 800W amp and this Bluetooth-ready head unit. Should be a massive sound upgrade without too much cost. I'm also going to do the classic new-used car routine: new spark plugs & wires, change oil/filter, air filter, tranny fluid, steering fluid, flush coolant. I'm also probably going to play it safe and replace the vacuum lines and radiator hoses, get new brakes, clean out the EGR (replace if necessary for $70 or just plug the vacuum line), and probably the entire exhaust system (might use a cat, might not - no emissions checks here in Idaho and I don't want to deal with the hassle). Later: One thing I love is tailgate camping, with music/light coming from the car so you don't have to get out a bunch of complicated equipment. So with that in mind, I also want to put two or four speakers into the liftgate/trunk area to play some tunes out the back when the hatch is up. Also in the trunk I want to inset some LED light bars so I can light up a campsite or whatever else without taxing the battery too much. I kind of want to add a 120V plugin or two in the back as well. This all should complete a pretty dope hatch setup for camping, etc while complementing the sound system (but not breaking the bank). Next is a roof rack - probably some simple, cheap gutter-clamp rack with crossbars which I can use for mountain bikes, kayaks, and mattresses. If I get real adventurous I might add fog lights or a towing hitch. I'm aiming to keep the whole project under $3,000 total - so my modifications budget is $1,500. What do you guys think? What suggestions do you have? Which should I watch out for, replace, or modify on a '93 Loyale? Do you think this is doable within my budget? How do you think this Loyale would do on a 4,000-mile road trip to Juneau, Alaska and back? Any other PNW folks around? I'm excited to join this community, get started on this project and hear your feedback. Cheers!

  10. I recently was given a 78 Subaru Brat, which i am already in love with. I have a few plans for this thing needless to say. My first and foremost project is to build the lift kit for it. Now i have read every single thread there is on lifting a gen 1 brat, trust me, but i still need help. i have all the materials i need for a 5 inch drop lift and 6 inch strut spacers, but i am just wondering if anybody has block specs or maybe just some last minute advice? This thing is never going to be my daily driver, i have a full size Chevy for that so it doesn't need to be comfortable on the highway just somewhat safe. My brat sat in about 9 inches of mud on the side of a road for just about 20 years before i got it, and before that it was not treated well, so its really rough. But it will be perfect for an off-road toy! all i did was drain the fluids out of this thing, put new fluids in, clean spark plugs, put a new fuel pump, coil, and air filter on it and it started up perfectly and runs like new surprisingly! The transmission is pretty noisy, but it's getting quieter the more i drive it. The previous owner decided to spray red primer right over the old paint 20 years ago, and that's why it looks as bad as it does, its not rust. I will keep you guys updated with any new progress! Mine is the red/blue one in the pictures needless to say.
  11. Hi Guys! Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Kamil. I’ll get right to it We make engine decals an liveries mainly for Porsches, you can find most of our current work here: http://car-bone.pl/ Right now, we are thinking about broadening our horizons We are creating something BRAND NEW, a completely new brand NOBOCO, it’s so fresh that we don’t even have a logo yet But it won’t take long, trust me We want to help out all of the car nuts restore their babies to their former glory. Everyday, we find new stickers to reproduce, come up with new designs, and help customers decide which way to go to do something really cool with their cars. Maybe you are working on your project, and you find yourself in a need of restoring some stickers? Have an idea for a livery? Just send me a PM, and I’m sure we’ll figure something out Cheers! Kamil Oh, just in case, here’s some of our work:
  12. This is my 1986 Brat. It had some engine problems when i first got it but now runs well. It is still in pretty rough shape bodywise though... And needs alot of body work. Working on restoring it little by little but living all the way in Guam its pretty hard to find parts.
  13. Found this on craigslist on January 4 which was a friday while surfing all forsale/wanted and saw a estate sale add so clicked on it which stated he had a brat for $200 with no other information. This just made me have to call him to find out more about. He said it was 84 in rough shape and it was going to be his rig to run on his property until his nephew hit a tree. I asked him if it had a good tail gate that wasn't rusted or beat which he replied its in good shape but its covered in bumper stickers. I told him to hold it for me and i would come out the next day from Sandy all the way on the other side of Mt. Hood to tow dolly it home From Bend (about 240 miles round trip). When we left the passes where a little slick around 6 in the morning going over hood but was worth it. Even got it running the next day with a battery, new oil, new body ground wire, and starting fluid . Its last titled in Idaho which is where the guy i bought it from got it from his Vietnam war veteran cousin who did lots of interesting things to it like plywood trim. To kick it off this thing was driven from Idaho to bend 350 miles with with out plates and handkerchiefs for tail lights speedo cable broke at this
  14. Found this on craigslist yesterday and couldn't resist going and getting it. Even with the supposedly bad motor it was still worth getting it. Once i got back home with a fresh battery and a little cranking she fired right up and ran fine. even has a skid plate seats are reupholstered wood shifter Factory cruise control in orange along with cluster ac
  15. Hello Friends, So a couple of weeks ago i picked up a 1997 Legacy L Wagon from one of my customers. I'm a mechanic at a Liberty Service station in Northern Virginia. A bad idler pulley cause it to throw the timing belt, and they didn't want to put that much money into a car with almost a quarter million miles on it, so we made a deal, and the car is mine. Luckily the 2.2L isnt an interference engine, so i was able to get it running with little effort. It was a one-owner car before i bought it, super clean, and VERY well maintained so even with 230,000 miles it still pulls strong. I'd like to do what i can to make it unique, and a little more functional for my needs, so i need your help. i need you guys to point me to the right threads on here for tips and tricks. here goes: >the rear end in sagging a bit. I know i can just replace the struts and springs out back, but being as this is the "L" model, the whole thing sits a bit lower than im used to, having mostly driven trucks and SUVs in the past. if i wanted to get a little more height, maybe just an inch, tho inches max, should i go with strut spacers, or the struts/springs from an outback or forester. i just want a little more ground clearance for driving up hunting trails and fire roads in SW Virginia, i'm not trying to tackle the Rubicon. >are there any issues taking the wheels from a newer model and putting them on my car? i want to upgrade from the 14" wheels i have, but i want to make sure i don't get wheels that wont clear the calipers. >finally, can anyone recommend a HID or LED headlamp kit? i drive down dark roads alot, and any extra lumens are greatly appreciated. i have already restored the lenses on the headlamps, and properly aimed them, but i could still use some more brightness. Thanks, and anyone who needs mechanical advice on subarus or anything, really, let me know.
  16. Hello, I am new to this sight and have recently started my first project car; a 1991 Subaru Loyale Wagon 4wd and this is my build thread So here's the story behind the "Shaggin Wagon" My room mate bought this car in early 2013 as a commuter for $900. It had it's quirks, but she ran soild at a 175,000 miles with the famous subaru tick of course lol Friend decided to take it out to a popular off-roading place called Jim Creek here in AK. Sure enough, he ran it into the ground. Blown out wheel bearing, blown out ball joints, cracked fuel line, blew apart the timing belt trying to drive it home, water pump was done, and clogged the air filter trying to cross a river which is what I think caused the belt to snap later on. As it sat at my other buddy's place for about a year I decided it would be the perfect car for my first real build. Drove out there about a month ago and bought it off of him for $200 as is. Before I towed it into Anchorage to begin the build I couldn't help but start to work on it where she sat. Before I did anything I changed out all the fluids. New tranny fluid, oil change & filter change, new fuel line exiting the filter and fuel filter, new spark plugs, wires, and distributor cap, and power steering fluid change. Next step; I picked up a new timing belt and re-timed the engine. Also replaced the water pump at this time. Messed up the seals a bit on the timing belt cover, but I am about to order a new seal in about a week from this upcoming Friday. I just needed to make sure it still ran and sure enough, she fired right up. Next thing I decided to tackle was shedding the wagons weight a bit First, the hatch needed to come off. Next up, roof removal lol In which case we got a little over zealous and shot it... Nothing a little bondo can't fix though. The day after the trunk removal I decided a little bit of spray on bed liner to the floor boards wouldn't hurt. I only have pics of the paint job thus far, but I may take more later on for sake of the thread. It's hanging in well though Had one more thing to do before I could bring it in to town. Decided to cut the fenders. Ugly job, but it'll do the trick. My goal isn't to make this thing pretty. It's to make it get me where I want to go. May even do more cutting as I will be running 28's here in the future. Flares are on my list as well, but that'll come later on once I actually get the tires.
  17. Hey I'm selling or parting out my gen 1 BRAT. Add explains all. http://portland.craigslist.org/wsc/cto/4304702483.html
  18. Got a 82 GL 4x4 wagon about a month ago. Im really stoked on it its a good runner for the most part. the CV axel went out on it and i had it replaced. Im looking for a new radiator because mine is cracked so i have to keep topping it off. im also looking for some external body parts; rear bumper, front mud flap. maybe a whole new front grill assembly. If anybody is around snohomish county area and has alot of experience with the old gens i would like to meet up and have someone take a look at this wagon and point me in the right direction of what i should do next on this thing. and maybe go rally around (; cheers and thankyou!
  19. Inhreited the Brat from my step-dad who bought it about 10 years ago. getting ready to turn it into a little rally beast. plenty of rust in all the common brat rust spots (plus a rather odd one on the underside of the hood), but shouldnt be too hard to fix. hard part is gonna be the drive system swap
  20. This is a project I started yesterday when I was given a Mini Brat shell that someone had stored in the rafters of their barn for 25 years.
  21. So today I picked up this for 1500$ Its a 90' Legacy Wagon with 161k. Full time 4wd. Interior is in "like new" condition. Exterior is in fairly good condition, a few scratches and dings. The only sad thing is...its an automatic My goals for this project are as follows: Custom Bumper Custom Roof Rack 2in Strut Lift Bigger Tires (if anyone could help with sizes that would be awesome!) Make it last till I'm 18 And last but not least. Get it as muddy as possible
