  1. Help! Just took my 1998 Forester in for knock sensor replacement and was told the following should be done: knock sensor-$370 valve cover gaskets- $470 crank seals-$755 timing belt while they're in there because they have to remove it anyway -$100 just for belt no additional labor left front axle cover torn and grease is "going everywhere" - $393 So, my question is do I dole out $2000 + on this car? My daughter goes to school in Syracuse - 3.5 hour drive and the plan was for her to take it to campus in the fall. I'm freaking out! Thank you!
  2. Recently I noticed a burning oil smell when parking our 2003 VDC 3.0L H6 after a drive, despite not seeing evidence on the floor of my garage of any serious leak. Brought the car into our very good independent garage and they found (and I also saw) an oil leak, which they said was coming from the Valve Cover Gasket and the Front Timing Cover Gasket. Alldata Repair S3000 lists the Valve Cover Gasket as 2.7 hours labor for one bank, 3.5 hours to replace both banks, with parts coming in at $29.95 for the Right, and $29.95 for the left, and $9.95 for the inner. Alldata Repair S3000 lists the Timing Cover Gasket Replace Outer Cover as 2.7 hours labor and $375.30 total. He quoted $700 total for the full job. And they are usually the best guys in both quality and price not just in town but over a dozen nearby towns. Does this sound right? Any general recommendations for this repair? I didn't have time to do it that day. The tech must have tightened up the gasket, because the leak has been very slow. Counted not more than 5 drops hitting the floor of the garage in a 24 hour period, but no doubt you can't leave a repair like this hanging or you're asking for trouble so I plan to do it this week. I figured as long as we're in there, we'll have easy access to the spark plugs and since the car is at 118,500 miles, just 1500 miles shy of the 120K inspection when sparks should be changed, might not be a bad time to change them. Any recommendations for good spark plugs?
  3. Hi Folks! First post. Thanks in advance for looking. I recently bought a '92 Legacy wagon awd 5MT. Prior to the sale, I brought the car to a mechanic I trusted for an inspection- I knew the car was leaking oil, but from where and how seriously I was uncertain. Mechanic told me the car was overall in good shape, and that the oil leak was likely a valve cover gasket, but maybe the rear main seal. Everything was cheap enough so that if it came to doing the rear main, I was okay with it. Long story short, I buy the car, and have him do the valve cover gaskets right off the bat. I get the car back and a day or so later, I start to get really bad judder when dropping the clutch in 1st gear. It seems to be getting worse every time I drive the car. the sweet spot between the amount of throttle which causes judder and too little so it stalls has gone from very small to non-existent. I did some search of these 'board, and it seems like people who describe judder like this are advised to replace the clutch. This sucks, but I'm okay with it 'cause the car was so cheap. also, have a receipt for the clutch ( and rear main , fwiw) replacements on this car from 11 years ago. So it seems fairly reasonable that it might be time again. My only concern is that I this transmission felt pretty solid when I drove it on the test drive before buying the car, and the mechanic didn't seem to think there was anything wrong with it. Is it possible that a sloppy valve cover gasket job could have leaked oil into the clutch and ruined it? It just seems weird that this problem happens right after I get the car back. thanks folks
