Ive got an OBDII EJ22 out of a 96 legacy, and a 98 forester to toss it into. Im after a little more reliability, and just want to make sure I dont end up with a permanently glowing check-engine light in the process. Just looking for some experiences... Just looking for some experiences... i did the same thing, 96 ej22 into a 97 GT ej25. you'll need the exhaust y-pipe, one has dual port heads and one has single port. if you have the 96 car, save and use the power steering lines, the forester ones will work, but the 96 will be cleaner. swap over the flex plates (or fly wheels), they match the trans not the engine. it's pretty easy, even i could do it. idosubaru Posted November 11, 2009 Share Posted November 11, 2009 (edited) "raises hand" it's very simple and it's all been covered ten zillion times. as long as they both have EGR you won't have any codes, it's that simple. yours is as easy as they get...it's just an engine swap. I bought her off a local garage... they did the swap for me, after toasting a 2.5 under warranty (they couldn't diagnose a clogged radiator after two engine swaps and two and a half months of me bringing it back to them). I followed the information posted up here, and relayed it to the garage. They handled it fine. I did keep the 2.5 clutch & flywheel, though... just swapped them out last weekend. Just make sure you have the correct EGR valve configuration and that the single or dual port exhaust match or you get the y pipe to go along with the engine. Everything else is plug and play. I've done about half as many as Tom - all in the last few years. Usually minor issues - around EVAP and vacuum lines. Nothing major.
