Anyone close to LAS VEGAS area?

Recommended Posts

Gee Christ, are you going to school there or what? I lived in Las Vegas for 28 months courtesy of Uncle Sam. I guess it's from living in the Pacific Northwest the rest of my live that I can't understand why anyone would want to live there. But I guess if the job paid enough, I'd probably move there.

Boy guys, thanks for the kind words. I thought people out west were friendlier than the snobs back east...maybe I should rephrase the post to

I'm moving to LAS VEGAS, what do you think?

I think its pretty cool. I've visited about 4 times in the last 3 years, everything is pretty new, clean, tons to do, lots of jobs, and the houses are about 1/2 of the cost that they are in CT. And the people for the most part are alot more friendly than back east. Hope to be able to meet some local subaru enthusiasts.

I think its a great place. Id move there if I could find a job I liked. Have really been wanting to move to Denver myself but Vegas would be in the top 5. I didn't see a whole lot of Subaru's when I was down for Vacation but there were a few. It looked like there was a Pick N Pull junkyard down there that was huge too but I might be remembering somewhere else.

Good luck Chris!

Northern Nevada has a ton of Subaru's. I usually drive to Reno or Carson City to visit their junkyards, cause there's on average about 20 to 30 good pickin subaru's between the 2 yards.

LV on the otherhand is about 8 hours south of Here, and its in the desert. Ive visited 3 times, my grandmother lives there. I also enjoy gambling, and where else better to go than Vegas!

Pack up your sunglasses and sun lotion and get ready for the wide open spaces. You will find miles and miles of BLM raods and trails to explore. It gets hot in the summer and sometime chilly in the winter. The summer heat is what the locals call "dry heat" little or no humidity. I spend the winter about 200 miles south in s/w AZ. and the summer in northern CA, Lake Almanor. I like the winters down here, but you can have the Rattle snakes and 115 degree summers.

You mentioned there are a lot of jobs there, what kind of jobs are those?? Any high tech jobs?? When I was there, the only real industry was gambling, and the normal support industries (gas stations, grocery stores, department stores). But it has been some time since I was there, maybe things have changed. It will be quite a change from CT. I remember one night being in downtown Vegas, looking up to the top of the Mint to see what time it was (there are no clocks in the casinos) and noticed it was 2 AM and 102 degrees. I also remember days in the winter when I came out to my car and it would have ice all over it, by the afternoon, it would be 80 degrees. The other thing I remember was the most cars that had been there awhile had the paint sand blasted off the front of the car from driving in the sand storms that sometimes blow thru there. Oh yea, and when it rains, the water doesn't soak into the ground, it flows on top of it and seeks out the low laying areas, like road intersections.

I just though you like to know what to expect before you decide to move.

Couple of things -

1) There are bad things anywhere you live.

2) I didn't ask anyone what it was like or how bad is it, I'm just trying to get a feel for who's close by, not what everyone thinks (thought I made that clear in my second post)

3) There are plenty of jobs in new construction, which is the field I am in.

4) Nice to know that some of you guys have a lousy attitude when your opinion was not even asked for.

5) There must be a reason it is the fastest growing city in the country.

6) Obviously I know its hot, I realize it is the desert. When you've grown up and lived in an area like CT and can't stand the cold winters, the heat sounds pretty good.

7) I have family that has already lived out there for 5 years and have not heard of the "sandblasting" effect. That is why everyone builds a huge house with a garage.

Thanks to those of you who have nice things to say and have some input to the topic of "Trying to find out how many board members are close to that area".

Gee, see what happens when you try to help a guy. Hey Zeno, let's take our advice somewhere that it is appreciated.

I can atest to the sandblashed front paint. I had a 64 Old Cutlass 2dr HT that I took down there from Washington, within 6 months of being there almost all of the paint was sandblasted off the front edge of the hood.

By the way, there are some great sand dunes north of Vegas on the road to Moab, not far past the Air Force base, on the right side of the road heading north. I used to take my dirt bike up there.

Corky,

There should be plenty of high tech jobs out in Vegas. I'm not sure what you mean exactly by tech jobs, but I'm an electronics Technician and my company has sent me out there on field service before. There is a ton of high tech stuff going on in each and every casino. Just look at the water show in front of the Belagio, as can be witnessed in the new Ocean's Eleven movie. These Casinos have so much money to throw around that they put together some of the most technologically advanced shows around. For me I know I can find a job, in fact I was offered two while I was there. One with the MGM Grand Tech department and one with an outside company that works with touchscreens. As long as you don't have a gambling problem it can be a great place to live.

Chris,

When I come out there later this year I'll look you up! A friend and I are going to go out sometime, probably for the SEMA show.

Later,

Keith

Corky,

I didn't mean to say I didn't appreciate the advice, I just didn't appreciate all the negativity. If a friend of mine was moving somewhere I didn't like, I probably wouldn't say something like "Why would you want to live there??" I do appreciate you're previous response, though.

Gee Chris, I guess you and I are different because I would tell my friend everything that I knew about the place he was heading, good or bad. That way he would know what he was heading into, instead of later finding things out the hard way and regret having ever gone there. Having lived there, I scatch my head everytime I hear about how fast the place is growing. But there is good and bad where ever you live. If you were planning on moving up here, I'd warn you about the rain, and the rain, and the rain. Oh did I say it rains up here. But that is why everything is so green, and we have all these muddy trails to run. By the way, it rains up here.

Chris, I knew you didn't mean that you did appreciate our comments, that was why my comment was followed by .

No problem, Corky. Despite the rain, I've always wanted to travel to Washington/Oregon area. I currently work for a company that subcontracts for the phone company, primarily SBC and Qwest. I think Qwest may be up in that region where you are. May be travelling up that way. Also have heard that there is some cool MT biking up there.

Yep, MT biking trails all over the place, but terrible to ride because it rains all the time. You won't have a good time up here because of the rain. Yes, QWest is here, but they have a probelm with their vaults getting flooded by the rain. Oh, did I mention that it RAINS here.

In case your are wondering, I'm practicing my 'Don't come to Washington' technique. We natives love it just the way it was, there are too many people here now, so I need to practice up on telling them about all the rain, so they will stay away.

Yup, Qwest runs Oregon and Washington. The way SBC is buying everything, i would expect SBC to run he entire PNW soon.

I too would make sure my friend knew everything bout the place, before he moved... but since you have friends and relatives there... you probably already know.

I'll plan a trip down there next winter, we'll have to get together and do some gambling.

Clantieri,

There is great wheelin not far from Vegas. I'll be down there this weekend. There's wheeling & Rock Crawling in St. George Ut. 2 hrs east.

I think you'll like Vegas. It's a big city and growing fast. I understand they publish a new phone book every 6 months!

Good luck,

Glenn

I agree, the place is beautiful, those red sandstone cliffs are great, there are trails all over the place. Like Sweet82 said, St George is only a little ways away, Moab is a weekend trip. While I was down there, since I don't gamble, I sent a lot of time out in the hills. I've been completely around Lake Meade. I can't remember the name of the mountain to the north west of Vegas, but I climbed to the top, there was still some of the wreckage of the B-29 that crashed into in the early 50s. There is actually a lot to do besides gamble. You can also head south along the Colorado River, there are some great trails down there towards Searchlight.

Re: my previous post: Please don't misunderstand me..I really like going/being in Vegas, but I don't think I could hack living like that again. It's very similar to Phoenix during the 70's and early 80's..few freeways, lots of growth and traffic (don't forget the relentless heat!).

Corky's right, there's lots to see and do. Many times while I'm there visiting neighbors or on business, I skip the casino and take advantage of the great prices on food and hotel rooms. Try PT's Pub on Spring Mountain..ham and eggs breakfast for 1.99!

Walking away occaisionally with a few thousand bucks is kinda nice too.

Just be careful when 4wheelin' in the desert.. you might discover the remains of someone who was "whacked" about 40 years ago.

Have fun!
