GOING POSTAL!!! The de-rice/resto saga begins

My roommate picked this pig up off craigslist. $500 bones. Runs and drives. needs a windshield, hood, steering rack, inner tie rods, axle seal. etc

 

first we started with an oil change.

 

we began with the de-ricing.

he also winched out his core support last week when I was at work on his day off. a dodge with a winch = frame machine from redneck hell. the fender even bolts back up!

even better. there wasn't one. :lol: I believe the hood and the windshield made sweet crunchy love in a formal life. :grin:

 

I do believe this wago will be getting an outback/gt hood, grille, and twin pot calipers, as well as rear disc conversion. only a couple hundred dollar score at the local import yard (where I found the only 93 lego ss I have EVER seen in texas):banana::banana::banana:

I have a set of stock headlights for that car if you want them. They look to be in better shape than what's on there.

 

The winch method of fixing a frame.... haha. I've tied my car to a tree before and backed up really fast to fix some bendage.. works perfect! :banana:

Good thing you're in TX otherwise you may have me at your front door throwing

money at you.

Its next to impossible to find a postal Subaru in decent shape around here.

And importing a RHD is PITA as well.

 

Good luck on the project and hope it all goes well for you.

 

As a side note, they usually need all 4 wheel bearings, as they seem to fail

simultaneously.

Also, make sure you change your tranny fluid and check your diffs, as they

receive a TON of work while delivering mail.

Go to carquest or some parts house and but the 3M headlight restore kit, about $20. It works amazing, right back to the crystal clear finish. This one of the only kits I have used which worked.

its only got a short 137k on it. also for the headlights, we used sandpaper in order as follows... 600, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000 grit. all wet sanded then finished up with polishing compound on a buffer. The owner of the car (xanadu62) used to resto headlights for car lots independently, so he had all this crap in a duffel bag in the shed :banana:

sucks none of the postals came with a MT

 

Too much of a PITA to work clutch and shifter, when postal driver stops every 50 feet or so to deposit mail. So, not surprising that all were speced with A/T.

did they make the postal legacy any colour besides red? I've only ever seen red ones in pictures and on the roads.

 

Also, out of curiosity, is your insurance more than it would be for a normal legacy? Does the steering wheel being on the wrong side jack the rates?

Shockingly enough, some carriers have RHD HHR's with manual transmissions.

So I was desperately hoping to find one with that, but its not a huge deal to

swap, about the same amount of work as a standard lego tranny swap.

EDIT: And yes, they made postal legos in the same color varieties as the

standard LHD legacies.

Yes.. this lucky bastard that I seen every now and then has a white one lol when I first saw the car I was like no way....

 

the postal car must be as rare as the SUS sedan.

SUS sedan is redundant... But I see them quite often, actually. There are even a few H6 models around town.

It's pretty much an Outback sedan "sport utility sedan" I've worked on a few, they don't seem to be that rare.

Oh, yeah I still see a few of the 2nd gen and 3rd gen Outback sedans around. I wish they would have kept making them. They're just cool! :banana:

I'm cutting the firewall clip out of a white 98 RHD legacy. Saving that the rack and the motor for an outback with a blown 2.5l.

 

The car was really clean until the junkyard lifted it up by the roof with the loader. So now I get to cut the clip out and I traded an F250 carcass for it.

I know 2 people with 3rd gen H6 SUSs. There's a 2nd gen that's right next door to me...

I'm in Maine though, it's the subaru state. Except VERY few old subarus, they all rust. I see more SUSs than every pre-1990 subaru combind.
