? 5spd d/r in '78 BRAT swap

Recommended Posts

now that most of the important projects are out of the way, it is time to work on the BRAT again

several months ago I bought a newer ea71 from '84 5spd fwd hatch

it has the side mount starter :)

I would like to mate it to the 5spd d/r from '85 wagon

what is required to mate them and install in the '79 BRAT?

clutch, transmission input shaft, driveshaft, and axle stubs compatability concerns.

mine's still sitting in the shed awaiting fitting.

You need the ea82 clutch plate to go on the transmission. You may be able to use the ea71 pressure plate and flywheel but I'm going with EA82 stuff.

For output, you'll probably need to make up some custom inner CVs with EA82 outer cups and EA71 internals.

The transmission will probably need custom mounts and you'll probably have to 'adjust' the holes in the floor for shifter.

I'm pretty sure unless its a turbo tranny, it has the same spline count as the

stock EA71 axles.

And since its an EA71, you'll definitely need the EA82 flywheel and clutch

assembly, as the EA71 stuff is all smaller diameter.

Now for mounting, you will need a custom mount setup as well as some

tranny tunnel bashing.

The 5 speed is larger than the stock 4, by a decent amount.

Yup, use all the parts from the 5spd d/r instead of the original 4spd.

use gen 1 axles

ea82 clutch/press/throwout/fly wheel/pilot, or upgrade to xt6 clutch and press plate and get ea82 flywheel milled to xt6 spec(they might be the same, its been a while).

you will want to hybrid the 5spd and the 4spd trans mounts together. might be easiest to put trans up in tunnel, on the motor and eyeball the two mounts and chop/cut/weld

cut the trans tunnel to accept the 5spd d/r shift linkage,

custom shortened driveline

It is a tight fit without any body lift, might require hammer massage.

I'm working on a similar swap and have some pictures of the trans mount I made in my build thread. It is a combination of the trans mount from the 5sp d/r and the trans cross member from the 78 wagon. Looks pretty shady, but i think it'll hold up.

I'm doing everything Free Range said in the post right above this. Seems to be working so far...

Nice project! have fun
