wanting to build a rear engine buggy need to learn some before i get started

first other than subarugears.com any other way to make a subaru trans go backwards? flipping over like vw ?

what is the best subaru transmission to build a 4x4 rear engine buggy gl/loyal/legacy/impreza?
i dont need a 5 speed 4speed is fine

ok and now for the lil tid bit to make every one hate me rather than spend money i dont have 2 subarugears.com i was thinking of putting a ..... (sorry!)
hondalildevil.gif engine to the subaru trans because they run counterclockwise and subaru run clockwise

then i still need to mount the subaru diff and suspension into a sandrail

So how long u think the diff will last running backwards? Will the gears fail being turned backwards?

so looks like im going to be running a L series hi lo 4 speed from subruise

and am getting tone of help on this from him

ok so subrise hooked it up with allot of the parts.  im going to need, but found my first few problems,

the steering knuckle wont work so i need something from a different car.   i need a list of where to start.   so i went on to rockauto.com looked up a front wheel bearing for a 88 gl.   this is what i got all these cars take the same bearing

now i just hafta find the one that has upper and lower control arms and fit the sub hub into it

Run on sentences and mispelling are making it really hard to tell what you are trying to accomplish?

Are you trying to use Subaru rear axles in a front hub?

Why not just use Legacy rear axles and knuckles?  That knuckle is already setup with the pivots for a multilink rear end.

yah but then i would have 4 reverse gears and one forward and be runnig a junk vw engine

Wrong way round.  He's saying use a Subaru engine and a VW gearbox, that is already setup for rear drive.

Or, use a FWD subaru trans, and put the engine in front of it, with the trans sticking out the back.  A FWD, 4EAT automatic or a FWD legacy/imp 5spd would be awesome, nice and short too not alot of rear overhang.

Apintonut, I assume you're either unsure of what you want or you're taking the P

i know exactly what i want. however no one else has done it yet.  . im just going to hafta be the first that dose it,  have a feeling it will be copied many times once i work out all the bug for every one else

1) if i had 1500$ + shipping.  i would just buy a set of gears from subarugears.com and run a subaru engine and have done with it.

2)if some one had already worked out how to make a subaru engine run backward's with parts that are easy to hand it would be built

3)if syncro where all over the place ide use that and a adapter plate and a pinto engine or bus trany where cheaper ide build what my last buggy was a .091 trans and pinto engine or maybe subaru

progress update;
no progress looks like subarugears.com is the only way to do it
check this out
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/vie...er=asc&start=0

that link is close to what i had in mind just in a rail frame

how ever im still looking for a cheaper way to build it looking for a ring gear that is the same amount of teeth and same pitch just revers angle i may resort to the same path as todd of subarugears.com and have it made but only the ring gear

this has potential to be a little weaker than subarugears.com 's parts but not by much i think.
they are running the rear diff in the front just flipped over no mods to the internals at all

made a little bit of progress to day i know what im looking for via specs
subaru is 37 or 39 tooth ring 12 tooth pinion right cut
i need to find the same thing out of something els that is 37 or 39 tooth left cut
witch i am finding but audi has 10 tooth pinion and Chrysler has an 11 tooth pinion........
one would think this would be easy this day in age to just type in what what u want and tell you what car it was used in

how ever its more like pic a car that u want to check and search for the ring gear get all the part number then search and search and search for the specs on that part

much thanks go out to merlin owner of Transmission parts for the masses

http://mmerlinn.com/catalog/silver_m...01/jtr01_f.htm

who also thinks the RING gear i seek is out there and just hast to be found (insert lord of rings joke here)

p.s. the next one to check is vw and after market vw mid engine parts to see if any one already makes a ring gear so that you can run mid engine with out flipping the whole transmission over
and Porsche

look, as we have all said - if you want to go mid-engined you can use the Suby engine and gearbox as it is. If you want to go rear engined there are many firms who will sell adapters to mate suby engines to VW gearboxes. What's the problem or is this just a troll post?

You say 'no one else has done it yet' well, I doubt that very much.

well vw trannys are getting to RARE they are a thing of the past. vw trans is off the table 100%. stop.  YES I WANT 4X4!!!! that would be way cool for my use of the vehicle.

if i had 2200$ for ring and pinion from subarugears.com , would not have this conversation.

i need a cheaper way to do it. that would take a ring gear that cut to make it work. im trying to find that ring gear already built for another purpose to fit into my tranny

what am i trying to build? really??? did u see the vid of the 4x4 go cart? did u see the pic of my frame? did u see i posted a link saying this is the same as im trying to build just in the frame i have?    if so how is that u no comprehension what im attempting to build? do you just have a big stick and go around here trolling  trying to stir a up $#!+

how ever if i mist took the rude tone of your reply im sorry but calling me a troll is very much not welcome

OK, my apologies - it's just that every suggestion made here has been rejected by you. So, lets get this straight, you want a rear engined 4X4 buggy. Fine, buy a rear-engined VW synchro and use the runing gear from that or just build your driveline using a transfer case. But you do realise that a rear-engined 4X4 buggy will have very little weight over the front wheels.

your right there is other ways to build it the most likely is a transfer case for what i want. a synchro is out if the question the trannys for those go for about 5000$ for a used one in my neck of the woods thats more than 1500$ @ subaruhears..com  i do appropriate the input but to build what i want  for the price i want its going to take somthing done a different way if this looks to turn into a 6k toy ill just buy the one of the buggys in the vid up top but really my budget is about 2k for this toy.  i think this is do able im going down to pia motor sports right now they are going to give me an needed ring gear im going to take around to some shops and see if we can find its backwards cousin

very little weight over the front wheels is fine  however i think it will have more than u think i bet is is 60/40  and the hole rail will be light about 1600-1700lb with me in it

my last rail was considered heavy @ 1750 with me in it, most the newer rails are coming in about 1200lb but cost big $$$$

Thanks for the clarification - further confusion was caused by the video you posted; that buggy was not rear engined but mid-engined. Now we know what you want we can help. Be good to see some pics as the project progresses, good luck with it.

edit:

Hey, wait a minute - I've just looked at the pic you've posted above - that's mid-engined too!

I give up (as have everyone else and now I see why)
