to widen the control arm i cut, grinded and drilled 3/8 flat bar and welded to the end of the control arm.

I used 84 axels and tie rod endspost-49100-0-42056000-1377373294_thumb.jpgpost-49100-0-42056000-1377373294_thumb.jpg

used the elbows for the 2 hedders and welded together 2 more in the center for an x pipe.

used a cherry bomb that i had and cut it in half then buuted the ends...not as loud as i thought it would be but sound sick.post-49100-0-71442600-1377373650_thumb.jpg

need paint...I am thinking of a matte blue similar to the original color....just dont want to worry about scratches as i am on an off road trek.

looking into some tires for the original wheels as i do like the look so much better and stick out about an inch due to new undercarriage.post-49100-0-00129100-1377387485_thumb.jpg I see alot of all seasons on e-bay that have a rugged tread pattern.

knocks and pings..............Knocks and pings.

I got froggy on my way to bullhead city and i think i  lost a rod bearing.

Fresh rebuild and second oil change...either too early for roughness or loose rod bolt....shes gonna sit a while until i get funds and time to tear it down to find the extent of the damage.

  • 2 weeks later...

planning on pulling apart this weekend. hopefully just a bearing and i can polish the crank, put new bearings and put back together.

I think i pushed her too soon.

went up the hill to searchlight doin 60. i stepped on it and the secondary kicked in......man she had power,. got to 90 then laid off and leveled out at 70.

I was cruisin for a while at about 4,000rpm and i felt a sudden loss of power....first thought was i fouled a plug but after turning down my death metal i heard the rattle.

I shut it down and came to a stop.

a hwy patrol immediately pulled up beside me and asked me if i could make it to the gas station a few miles ahead so he didn't have to stamp it with the wonderful orange sticker.

what choice did i have?

it went from rattle to chitty to bang-bang in 4 miles.

i waited for my bro to come get me from bullhead.

i pulled the valve covers hoping i had a bent push rod or lost a lobe or any other hail mary founded wish upon a star ideas that passed through my mind.

This trucker kept me company with his wisdom...cool southern good 'ol boy  standing there with a beer in his hand and another in his pocket asking the same quetions that were running through my mind.

to make a short story long..gonna tear down this weekend and post my findings.

Where i grew up it was find a way to fix it without spenging any money or walk.

just pulled the engine out, popped the heads and found number three piston like this.. post-49100-0-10274100-1379705644_thumb.jpg

popped out the piston and rod . bearing is simply gone

rod is beat up and crank too.

i have a spare crank that i will polish and i also have 2 sets of std rod bearings.

just need main bearings.

i saw a set on e-bay for $40

anyone know a better place to look for a better price?

The wagon looks amazing, I love that lift. Any new updates to it?

sorry gang.. been busy goin to school and workin.

Ive been runnin the engine from the brat for a few months to get by but shes tired and ready for a re-build.

I just found an engine for 100...guy had it for years and said it was smoking blue when he removed it. when i got it home i noticed it wreaked of old gas in the crank case. pulled plugs and found gas fouled plugs. i tore it down and found good rings and bearings with normal wear and cylinder walls lightly scratched..

my thoughts are carb was flooding out into crank case causing oil to thin and level to rise and get pass rings.........the usual misdiagnosis of bad rings.

I could have run it a s is and got 5 years out of it but i already had my other case bored with ea71 .20 pistons, ported heads and intake and cam ground so i ripped out the crank and replaced the rod and main bearings for my custom built engine. i just got done torquing the heads and will adjust valves to transplant tomorrow. then i will start tearing down my sons engine to get his brat tickin again.

i have an original equipment single bbll holley? i assume for grabs if anyone needs it....or if anyone still tolerates these. i can see the intake on this engine is different than the hitachi equipped intakes...havent dealt with these yet..anyone got any pros or cons to these carbs?

you will need cv axles and tie rod ends from a gen 2. be shure the axles have the deep sleeves that go on your trans-axle as some are the shallow ones. this will give your axles more travel and prevent them from popping out.

if you can find gen 2 hubs that are 1/2 inch wider also.

you will get 3.5 - 4 inches total added width. make sure you measure 1.5'' for your extension on the control arms cuz the actual difference between gen1 and 2 is 3".

you will also need to extend the struts or strut mounts in one way or another to compensate.. not sure what the measurement is cuz i did a lift and used gen2 struts with butted bottom cases for 5" total strut lift then used the adjusting nuts on the  gen2 struts to get alignment camber.

in a nut shell its an insane persons thing to do cuz you must commit yourself but it worked great and runs pretty straight.

its not that hard really..just a bit of madness to think of how to do it on my part without buying kits and costly stuff. the only thing to fabricate is the control arm extensions...all else is bolt on and you will just need to get 2 cv axles and tie rod ends whether at the junk yard or e-bay where i get all my parts now..i think you already have some sort of strut lift going on which is the cause of your camber issue..this will definitely fix it and i would be happy as a tornado in a trailer park to see someone else do it too.

best wishes.

Anyhoo...my engine has been re-built and put back..it took me a couple of days to de-glaze and clean but the re-build went fast except for dropping the last wrist pin circlip inside the block..then having to pop the piston back out and shake a 200 pound piggybank for a half hour until it finally fell back out but i did the swap in all of 5 hours and had her fired up before dinner.....purrs like kitty :headbang:
