Engine Width

Greetings all.  I will be installing a Subaru mill into my and my son's '74 Super Beetles (so yeah, converting 2 cars).  The info I'm hoping to gleen from the various experts on here is about engine width.  I know an EJ22 is pretty narrow, and will fit with minimal clearancing of the engine bay of a Super Beetle, but I'm curious if there are other combinations of short block and heads that will have more power, and be just as narrow?  Or have the same or close to the same power, but narrower.  I have heard, though I cannot confirm, there is a later EJ25 that is a bit narrower than the EJ22.

I all honesty, I'm far more concerned about making the engine fit, than ultimate power as the EJ22 with 135-140hp will make a light little 1900lbs Super Beetle move right along.  If the easiest to fit engine is an unmolested EJ22, I'll be perfectly happy with that.  I'm not interested in turbo engines, though I have friends who've made them fit, simply to remove that much complexity from my conversions, so it's all about doing the least mods to the car to get the engine installed.

I'm pretty well versed in most every aspect of doing this conversion, so if anyone needs or wants a clarification of any part, please feel free to ask.  If anyone knows of a website that gives measured widths of various Subi mills, that would be the most helpful.
