88rx transmission in a 2nd gen brat

I recently purchased a title-less brat for parts. The owner of this brat had swapped out the transmission for one from an 88rx turbo. Full time awd dual range locking center diff.

 

On paper it sounds great. In application it's a little iffy finding the gears.

My question is this a normal swap? I'm debating on moving it to my good brat but idk if there's known problems or a better route.

 

Aside from the shifting it gives the brat a lot of extra oomph with the stock engine. Thoughts?

Extra ooomf? I don't see how that's possible since it has a 3.70 ratio being from a turbo rig and the stock trans would have had a 3.90 ratio unless the gearing was changed. It is a far better tranny overall and worth using. You're really only going to gain from using it if you're going to EJ the engine or try some insane power build. If you decide not to keep it, let me know and I'll buy it. I have a specific use for it in an upcoming project.

I'm not sure what the old owner did exactly. But it does have accelerate faster than my stock brat on the same ea82. There might be other changes in not seeing to achieve that though.

 

I do plan on doing a 2.2 swap when I can afford it. My question really was should I wait for the transmission that goes with that car or is this one better since ita already set up to roll in a brat.

If you wait and use an EJ tranny, you will lose the DR feature so bye bye lo range. You have to decide if you want lo range or not for wheeling.

 

Oh, and unless the engine has been swapped, I think you mean EA81. Brats didn't come with an EA82.

@skishop69, look up the gear ratios for the 4spd in the Brat vs the 5spd in a Loyale, even the turbo.

You'll prob find that the 5th is only a bit taller than the 4th of the Brat, with the other gears evenly spaced.

 

Just because it has a taller diff ratio doesn't mean it doesn't have shorter gear ratios ;)
