Metal parts that came out with my oil drain plug?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

We drained the oil today and some metal parts came out.  Looks like halves of some  flat spring washer of some sort.  Can anyone identify these parts?  Does this mean my engine is dead?  No other metal or grinding are present in the oil.  One of these pieces cam out on the magnetic drain plug.  I fished 3 more out with a magnet taped to the end of a wire.  Does that account for all of "them" or could there be more in there?  Photo attached.

My son needs to drive this back to Utah next week.  Too much to hope that it's something harmless I suppose.

I might be able to drop the pan but I'm not sure if I can get to all the bolts around the frame mount without removing the motor.

1995 Subaru Legacy L wagon.  2.2L motor I think.

Thanks.

Rocker shaft spring washers. I've had engines apart and found them in the bottom of the oil pan. Found half of one one time and couldn't figure where the other half went off to.

Not too difficult to fix. Basically remove the valve covers, then remove the rocker shafts and disassemble them to put the new washers in.

You wont notice any difference, but the rocker arms will wear on part of the rocker shaft support. When you get it apart you'll see the marks it leaves. Eventually (like after 100k miles), it might start to cause an issue, but i'm sure there are a lot of ej22s running around with those washers broken and sitting in the bottom of the oil pan.

Well I have been unable to locate these small rocker springs ANYWHERE. Discontinued.

Valve Spring #13256AA030

I guess those with 2.2s will have to run without them! They break in half over time it seems and they end up in he oil pan.

Nice, thanks for posting. Used or an alternate option is the only source I guess.

I found a few sources that say they have them in stock but they are not in the U.S....

The shipping isn't great but they "appear" available. This seems like it was actually a common part used in all the earlier EJ engines.

I have tried 2 of the international wholesalers like that. Came back as not available. They all show 6 available. I think they capture that data from Subaru someplace, but when they go to order, they are not available and I get a refund. :(   I guess I need to find some old junkyard engines and pull the rockers. But it appears that these are not 'critical' to the engine.
