Subaru Down!; ea82t 88 gl-10

Recommended Posts

Exhaust manifold had been leaking since I got it,  Got New studs and Gasket in this morning.

"My Subaru finally sounded Subaru!!"

Sounded Great finally compression to the tailpipe.

I didn't even turn on my car audio (Duh Boxer Growl) :D

I didn't hit full boost, and was under 30 MPH when I felt a hesitation....

Noticed Steam, AND then a Cloud of steam from the tailpipe.

Was in the Left turn lane so I pulled it over.

All My coolant was leaking... Added coolant,

Then Crunch!!! when I turned ignition.

On the ground my coolant continued to flow.

I will not turn the ignition as something is WRONG.

Will have towed home later today.

Need to move 1500 miles in 10 Days and Drive this car there! Holy Crap!

So I hope there is a Subaru Guru that knows maybe what could be going on or lead me in the right direction for repair ASAP I love my Subaru even though Its Cost me way too much. 10827879_1723081187937878_34848709276849

Repaired exhaust, more backpressure, a compromised headgasket could have been the final nail there. Blew the gasket, filled the cylinder with coolant, hydrolocked it. Pull the plugs all out and see if it'll crank and watch out for liquid spraying out the holes.

tons of water in cylinder.

Ran out of light so will pull the remaining plugs in the AM.

So.. what if it still wont crank?

I'm Screwed, My Lady is pissed!

...."My Honda costs less and never brakes down"

Oh forces of Pleiades shine some light my way, cause if the wagon was running we would crawl over the civic!

EA82 turbo = troubles.  If you modded a Honda like the wagon, would it still be as reliable?  Probably not..  Mods that increase power, speed, get you into places you can't with stock, etc.  usually trade off reliability and economy...  Not saying don't do them, or that they aren't fun, but they are a trade off..

motor is stock. its a GL10_turbo.

only engine mods are Intercooler.

Adding a Turbo on a NA EA82 would be a cause for alarm; Naturally Aspirated EA 82 has much higher compression.

The Turbo EA82 (EA82T) has reduced compression to compensate for boost. (This is very common for many NA VS forced induction.)

This is my second GL last was Carb.

Also My Sixth Subaru, 42nd Car.

This is the one I do not want to part with.

Sure I was sad when I sold My MY04 STi, but now I'm over 40, I've already been to the STi magic spot.

Should be pulling engine in the next few days. My neck is broken so I can not do much, even typing correctly is an issue.

I wonder...

Is there a place to get the Correct Head Gasket and only the HG really fast?

The Engine has 6500mi since rebuild all other gaskets are fine, new, all seals are New.

I don't want to grab the off the shelf Pep Boys, Autozoner, HG, cause I hear its crapolah.

Any Advice?

I do not mind tearing down the motor in another 5k miles.

Eventually this engine will be in a sedan and the Wagon will get a 2.2.

I wonder how long it would take your average person to do a headgasket in an EA82. It took me and my buddy 7 hours to do a headgasket in a 2007 impreza. I have never looked at the service manual. Do you have to remove cams to get to head bolts like the DOHC EJ motors or can you leave the heads together and just unscrew the 12 or w.e headbolts to get it apart?

Off without a hitch.

gaskets including Intake were changed.  About 2.5 hours till the EA82 was ready to go back in.

Has a few bugs.

Not Boosting. Its got to be a vacuum line issue.

Blitz Dual SBC.

Anyone have this controller or maybe can help me try to get boosting again?

Yes had to remove Cams to get to head bolts.

Yes Intake gasket was shot. Wish I knew that before pulling it out!! But now I got what I wanted Timing Belt procedure and HG procedure, Just didnt want to do them before moving.

Like many of you when there is a problem with the car one might miss sleep.

Awoke this morning thinking about plumbing on the intercooler.

Put Vac lines the way i thought they were before, then checked the IC piping.

During the install I guess the hose connection was loose.

It Seems to be all good. Here is a pic of my nephew smiling when it was pulled on Saturday. 12885834_1736010229978307_17103781388674

Really Though, I did want to learn to pull this engine, and do the gaskets, and learn the timing.

Just not before moving to WA.

My nephew, was trained to do this on I-6 Twin Turbo Diesel, so it was a walk in the park with Uncle for him.

The bugs made him freak out a little but now we know.

Gave him a pipe and a lead on fixing his Honda, now gonna teach him to drive manual.

Thanks to USMB and the Old Gen guys for their help, We didn't feel alone.
