Bi-Monthly SUBARUBICON thread/sticky?

Just a quick post to bump the Rubicon run scheduled in August this year. There is a lot more logistics to it than just showing up in Georgetown.

Based on my limited knowledge of members, I believe Subarujunkie and NVZeno are local to the area. I am not volunteering anyone, but has someone taken the lead in organizing?

We've narrowed it to a week in August, but can we assign an exact date for the trailhead? Vacation scheduling, possible hotel reservs, etc. Party in Tahoe at the end? (should be beer, music, etc alog the way, Im sure... but it may be a two-day run with some after time fun and repairs and shuttling back to start areas).

Well i used all my vacation time to go up to Washington for a week. I will get another week of vacation, but not until Sept 9th.

I want to take a drive up to the rubicon and just get a feel for what we're in for, but i need another rig to go with me. Im only about 30 miles from the trailhead, but probably a good 200 miles from the nearest lifted subaru

I'm interested in the scheduling, vacation issues. I won't have a monster 6 inch lift or anything, but I'm still up for the trip. Ross

We are leaving Saturday, August 16th from Seattle. Heading to Oregon to hook up with Mudrat. May stay there Saturday night and head south from there. So we will be in Sacramento on Sunday. Head to Georgetown Sunday or Monday. Gives us 3 full days to do the trail. Four days if neccessary due to breakage and what have you.

We had agreed on that week during the last thread.

If the Rubicon isn't enough adventure for you, Burning Man happens the following week not too far away. What a long strange trip that should be!

Hmm, hope that I'm up and running by then. I like the head to georgetown on Monday idea, cause that gives me enough time to get down to Sac on Sunday. I can't leave Oregon untill after 4 on Sunday cause my Mom's getting married, and I HAVE to be there, or die, a painful horrible death (her words, you know how it is, I brought you into this world, I can take you out.). I think that I should be running. Heck, even if I have to throw the EA81 in for the week. Catch ya Laters.

Adam, you could leave there at 5:30 and make it to Sac by Sundown.

Ken, It would probably be best for you guys to stay in Eugene Saturday night, and then head to sac bright and early Sunday morning. It will be a full day of driving. We stayed in Eugene on the way back down, left there at 11am and made it into Sac at around 8pm. That included an hour stop for breakfast. If you guys are going to be driving down on those swampers, it would probably take you longer.

Im most definatly going to take a drive up to the trail and see what we're in store for. Now that i have the lift, maybe i can get into the trail alittle too.

Okay, {sorry I missed the earlier post date, Ken}

- so Monday, August 18th is start day - xlnt.

Brian, perhaps when you go for scoping out, see what is a best area for congrugating many vehicles, like a gas station, restaurant, big dirt field, etc, and its proximity to the trailhead. Georgetown is no metropolis, and we may have to share the bar with Harley riders {maintaining a low profile with our non-Jeep vehicles, insisting our Subarus were made in America, lol. - I have a story about this -really.}

Finishing in Tahoe midweek should have many options for hotel stay to shower and shine and play (weekends get very busy).

Did we have a guestimate on # of vehicles? r/PK

From the looks of that map there. Seems like the trail goes from Georgetown to Tahoe. Are we planning on running the entire trail? Or just a section of it? I think with only 3 days planned to do the trail, we should only attempt 1/2 of it. Looks like it passes through Icehouse road.

Do you guys think we will take the whole trail? Or from Georgetown to Icehouse Road, or from Icehouse road to Tahoe?

My 2 cents on trail time......?

We need to know the true length of the entire trail from GeorgeTown to Tahoe....?

If its less than 30 miles total , I say lets do the entire thing......Bragging rites and all...:)

There's lots more to the planning,

We also need to compile a list of minimum requirements for ( vehicles) to become part of the trail crew.......

And As most of us are trailering rigs down, Are we going to have someone stay with and babysit our rides....? or will they be ok.....?

I'll add more later, John

Here's a good tidbit of information ive found:

www.4x4now.com/trcar.htm

and

www.4x4wire.com/trail/rep...bi_ride01/

Not sure of the entire length of the trail. That story there sais the trail can be completed in 2 days, but 3 is recommended. I think since we will most likely have a harder time than any other rig that has taken the trail... 4 days for the entire trail.

As far as equipment needed... i guess we should start talking about that so we can prepare.

I figure if that Montero made it through relatively unscathed, you guys should have a good time. As long as it doesn't rain too much! Not saying it looks easy, just that It really seems you can all make it through with some spares, winches, and attentiveness.

One more thing to consider: the <em>direction</em> of travel. Georgetown to Tahoe, or Tahoe to Georgetown?

I know there's a parking area for trailers and such on the Tahoe side (Brian, those are the pix I sent you), I've seen many rigs parked there. PK's right..it can get really crowded on the weekends in Tahoe. Campgrounds are sold out, and hotels can get scarce and expensive, especially if there's an event that weekend.

Permits may be needed for fires or stoves along the trail, might want to check USFS for specifics.

**Edit: Just found some USFS info, the trail from Tahoe to Georgetown is 22 miles long.

I think we should do the run from Georgetown to Tahoe. That way when we finish, we come out at Tahoe. Where everone can see us, and just be amazed:p

I agree, Georgetown to Tahoe. Starting in Tahoe on a busy weekend, yuck. Plus, finishing in Georgetown midweek... no one is there and minimal selection of services.

I lived in Cool, CA (15 minutes from Georgetown) and the population was 1500... Georgetown is smaller and further removed. Having Tahoe as a goal sounds more appealing and accomodating when we need to recover and party. :D

He said "party". :D

I'll probably be remembered as the lush for this trip. Won't be good for ish except holding on tight. You guys <strong>do</strong> know I'll be there riding shotgun with my buddy Ken, right?

I guess I won't be able to <em>drive</em> a 4X Soob till Octoberish, but that won't stop me from riding in one. ;)

Here's an email I got recently from a guy in an offroad club located near the "con". If his wedding plans work along side ours, we have a guide. We've been in contact for several months.

Hey Eric,

I got the tape and watched it. I can honestly say that I have never seen a Subaru do what you guys were doing to them. I look forward (if I can get the days available since I am getting married on the 6th of Sept.) to watching you guys take on the Con.

A couple heads up for you before your trip down.

Elevation: Of course the trail is high up in the mountains and will effect fuel mixtures and power available. That was a hard lesson I learned in my carb'd Toyota. If you guys are running EFI, not a problem.

Tread Lightly: Unfortunately the Rubicon trail is under HEAVY watch by the environmentalists due to some abuse in the past and that it is a very popular place to go for wheelers. They are looking for anything to shut the place down, so make sure that when you go to be very consciencous about it all. Litter, spilled vehicle fluids, drinking & driving (they ticket up there for this), and most importantly staying on the path and not creating new paths. Furthermore, many locals up there are protective and if they see stuff happening that could shut down the trail, they will take personal actions, so just be careful.

Weather: Just be prepared for Wet, Cold, Windy, and Hot weather. It can change hourly up there.

Animals: Nothing really bad. There are bears that attack trucks and camps, but usually not people.

There you have it.

I have a guide map of the trail, and it shows the distance from Georgetown to Tahoe. Its a distance of 70.5mi. Obviously, we need to do an average of 25mi a day, which should be no problem. Theres most likely sections/areas that we can breeze thru and be able to enjoy the scenery. Other areas.....well you know the drill by now:D

Im trying to gather a group of people to head to the trail with me to do recon on the area, both the tahoe end and the georgetown side of the trail.

So far we have....

Me.

Anybody else in the area want to go? We wont be running the trail, just maybe hike it alittle, get a feel for the area and speak with some of the people driving out for their opinions. Also, take plenty of pix :)

Well, after futher reading, ahem, I am revising the mileage of the trail. Altho it actually is 70mi long, from Georgetown to Tahoma, 30mi of the start from Gtown is really paved and improved road. I'm not sure yet about the tail end, theres not much info in the book except its only 1mi to Tahoma from the staging area. Its 9mi to Tahoe City from Tahoma, but its a long way to go to get back to Gtown that way. We could go up and cruise the strip and then head south to Hwy50 to go back to Gtown.

CA 89 between Tahoma and South Shore is not recommended for trailers. Many steep, narrow hairpin curves at Emerald Bay. US 50 Westbound over Echo is very steep, but passable..just not as smooth a drive (especially with trailers) as it would be to go north on 89 to Tahoe city, Truckee, and I-80 down the hill..way easier drive.
