New to Subaru.....Have some ?'s

Hi my name is Joe and I just got a 88 GL wagon for $150.00. The body has got some rust on it (but no dents) seeing as I'm here in WI but the interior is nice and just about everything works(pw,pl,ac,and cruise). I have a few questions hopefully someone can answer for me. How do I tell if I have fuel injection or carb(looks like a carb kinda but I know there is like a throttle body type fuel injection that looks similar). Also how do I know if its a high range low range model or maybe they didn't make high range low range models in 88. Finally my back hatch does not want to latch and the key will not work in it. Do theses latches go out and where do I find a good one.

being and 88 it should be single port fuel injection (unless its a turbo) If you have a HUGE air cleaner on top of the engine that you would have a carb, though they weren't offered in 88. You should have like a little black elbow coming out the top of the throttle body and going over to the passenger fender area (where the air filter is)

 

If the 4WD is push button its single range. IF you have a lever to the rear of the main 5 speed shifter and toward the drivers seat than its probably a dual range.

 

Being an 88 it could be part time OR full time 4WD

Well it must be fuel injection because it isn't a turbo and has the air cleaner on the side. I have a push button on the shifter but mine is an automatic so I don't know what that means.

I think Flowie is correct about your fuel system and trans, but you could always call Subaru America to get the specifics. Sorry I don't know their # off hand, but they do have a web site. They are an excellent resource. You'll need your VIN # when you call.

 

I don't think there is anything inferior about Subaru locks. They will dry out just like any other mechanism that isn't lubed regularly. That's why it is on the recommended maintenance schedule after all.

 

I would take off the rear tail gate interior panel so you have access to the latch and lock. Then give it a good drenching of wd40 and let it sit overnight. That should loosen them up unless they are severely corroded. You could also take them off and attempt to clean them in a pan of solvent.

 

Worse case is that you'll have to replace them. You should be able to find plenty of people on this board that can set you up with a good latch, and key/cylinder combo if it comes to that.

Well, if you're is an automatic tranny, then it will only be a single range. The button should engage the 4WD, when you push the button, the 4WD light on the dash should light up.

I had a similar problem with my back latch...

The spring in the handle rusted out and no longer returned the handle to its closed position, so i just push it closed.

 

I don't think that its tha same problem as yours though...

The phone number for Subaru of America Corporate is 1-800-SUBARU-3 ( 1-800-782-2783 ). They can give you specifics about your model based on the VIN #, and they will also add you to their database (for recall notices, etc.) As for the hatch latch, I have yet to see one anywhere where they use salt on the roads that still works. See if you can get a junkyard down south to ship you one, or post a WTB in the marketplace, if the spring is broken. If the entire latch mechanism is frozen, try squirting some WD-40 in the latch (through the rear panel--the plastic clips come off easily enough, just pull upwards) and graphite in the lock.

I sprayed the heck out of it with wd-40 but with out any luck. The guy I got it from said it worked before I came to pick it up he went to show me how you have to close it and it didn't work(and still no luck). I guess I'll have to get another one from somewhere.
