submat
So spec says .002 tolerance for head surface. Anyone try head gasket repair with larger tolerance or is that a must to follow? Well the heads seem to be ok it is actual block surface that seems to be out on the .002 tolerance. So hard to get anything in there to get it flat with the alignment pins.
DaveT
I have just used the post apocalyptic head resurfacing method described in an old thread on thus forum. Once you grind the marks from the fire ring off, they are flat.

DaveT
Also you should be able to tell with that method - the sand marks should be even across the entire face, and the head should not rock.

ferp420
You can pull the alignment pins out with vice grips and level the block out a bit also
