I have a 2001 Legacy that idles rough when started, and then the idle will smooth out when full temp is reached, but when you drive it it still hesitates a bit on aceleration.  The OBD says I have a misfire on 3 cylinders. Should I just change the ignition coil? Can I test the coil first to see if it bad?  Thanks for your help it is always much appreciated.

Get a used Subaru coil from an Auto wrecker but change the spark plugs and wires (NGK only) first.  Don't drive it or you will toast your Catalytic Converter (misfires put unburned fuel into the cat destroying the catalyst)

OP should post milage, but I assume it's 150k+.  Of course the spark plugs and wires are always a concern.  Also check for oil on the wires which would mean  they are toast.

However, I have a 2002 and I had similar hesitation especially from a stop.  I fixed it by changing the A/F sensor [front O2 sensor].  So I would look there first.  I used Bosch sensor from Advanced Auto forr $65.  Easy change.
