Steptoe Posted August 18, 2019 Share Posted August 18, 2019 I have tried search functions without success on this topic. I have the EJ and it's box crudely sitting in the bay. I have fitted up a pooey old aluminium radiator originally sourced via eBay. Recently felt sorry for the fella in the US region saying he got one from Australia. Get rid of the cap that comes with it and also the washer on the drain tap These are heavy duty cooling capacity so about fatter. With radiator in place, engines rear mounting not sorted - there is a maximum 45 mm clearance between radiator core and crank pulley. I'd like 5-8 mm final clearance for torsional movement so some skinny fans engine side will be needed. The radiator pipe outlets are 30 mm. The EJ top hose pipe is 38.7 mm. Anyone found in -hose adapter/ reducers for part of this task? Any hoses to butcher for sections suggested? Given the masses out there with an EJ in their EA81 bodies there must be so many who have done this and know just what to do and explain easy to someone who is decades behind these pioneers I am thinking most use std EA81 radiators or is the BRZ the way to go now? I recall some have radiator shops braze in new fittings to radiator at least for the lower hose. The top hose looks a crazy angle to deal with. Steptoe Posted August 18, 2019 Author Share Posted August 18, 2019 I may have even suggested this following idea before somewhere ....it is an adaptor to allow for an inline sensor to be screwed into the 1/8" tapered hole in the side - eBay of course. I got them for emergency hose repair This is 30 mm size. 30 is max diameter at the rib not where hose clamp goes it is about 28 mm If I can entice a friend to turn it's odd hex shape down to 38.7 mm then cut in half - got 2 somethings to play with The crude cast inside diameter of my EJ20 outlet for top hose is about 31 mm Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
el_freddo Posted August 18, 2019 Share Posted August 18, 2019 Jono, you’ve pretty much nailed all the ways to do this from what I’ve tried/done myself. I’m currently running with a set of home made adaptors and use a cut down of the two EJ radiator hoses and one EA hose to make the setup work. It will be very similar to the EA81 setup - but I’m also running a lift so I have a bit more length to play with. I like your idea of turning that adaptor down. That’d be a neat solution. You take a long time making a custom top and bottom hose from paper, then cardboard , then metal then add a joiner each end to give some flex. Steptoe Posted August 18, 2019 Author Share Posted August 18, 2019 Hmmmm...I probably will forget. That adaptor from the studios of Steptoe is actually a project on hold. It has a 5/8" hose barb for lower hose of EA, with long hose to a remote fill coolant reservoir out of an Astra .... and that is where it stopped when I found standard Brumby radiator on the EA82 is excellent, far superior to EA82 single core Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
ANIM_Hooneru Posted August 21, 2019 Share Posted August 21, 2019 Hey Fellas, Gotta admit its been something like 12 months since I have been online here and my Brumby conversion hasn't moved much further along then it was last time... Lack of progress aside I can give some advice, for mine I used the standard Brass/Copper radiator bolted up as normal. I am not running power steering or air conditioning at this time so my cooling fan is on the engine side of the radiator, towards the drivers side. There's not much clearance between it and the crank pulley but I think it will be ok. It has been a hell of a long time since I bought my hoses so I don't know what the part numbers were now however they were made by Mackay and they were a heavy canvas lined hose that was bendable and with different sized ends, 32mm and 38mm if I remember right. My current daily is Brumby with a fan mounted front side, RHS of car. Took a lot of work to make it fit in. Just an old freebie from an Astra . German made Bosch from memory. Sounds like this sort of thing can be found in the US, maybe by Gates? Started off by purchasing within Oz and having the seller post direct, supplied and delivered cheaper than I could post one from my place! FerGloyale Posted September 7, 2019 Share Posted September 7, 2019 I found hoses off the shelf that had the 2 differing ends, and also the 6" rise I needed for my lift. I had pics of the part #s on my old Photobucket account.....unfortunately I'm not sure I can acess it anymore. I need to dig them up somehow, those hoses are 11years old.......Time to change soon. For other EJ swaps, with no lift, I simply used flex 16" and 18" hoses with 1-1/4" on one end and 1-1/2" on the other. I carry a 24" spare for use in the wheeler. for now. I sort of view them the same as a temporary spare and only if you must. Maybe I need to change my views of them Also feel we have big companies choosing what they bring in to Australia to retail. You choice you Americans have is mind blowing. I found the fan at the junkyard in a first gen legacy. As I was finally finishing the ej install 3 years ago, (took me 8 months!) I ordered a piece very similar to that one, but made of silicone. then two pieces of flexy hose with the spring inside and some beating and coercing and my coolant circuit may be ugly, but she stays cool enough! in fact I didn't change a thing on her, same pieces from about 20,000 miles ago. I was reading an old hot rod magazine (2005) and a new part for $6 was a strip of metal with a spring that goes around the outside of a hose...you bend and trim as needed. genius! but i never seen this in real life however. They were marketed in a bizarre way, seemed to only be sold in pairs of either 1/2" or 5/8" and a metre of heater hose to suit. Not sure workshops wanted to buy heater hose they already had at bulk wholesale prices. We bought them for the jigger Fantastic device I believe was licenced or something to Gates who made them available individually. My local Gates supplier put me in a panic saying there were out of production, NLA. Moving right along, finding that a typical line from them for stuff they can't supply. Seem to be marketed again as or by Unicoil . Best Subaru application I found is for the bent coolant hose at the back of the EA82T along with silicone heater hose.
