considering we didn't do too badly without them for 90+ years, I'd either get the cheapest, fab one from some kinda filter material (did that a coupla times back when there weren't aftermarket choices) or do without.

If you suffer excessively from mold, pollen or other allergens, you may of course need to shop carefully.

I just poked around under the hood today. 4cyl engine in a 6cyl engine space, lots of room. Low on coolant which makes me wonder how well this car was prepped. Air cleaner is clean. Oil filter looks like it has been changed in the past.

I've gotten aftermarket, some come in packs of two or multiples for a good price, but not for 2015+  and they fit fine, but i don't recall brand or them being notably bad.  Try one and compared it to the (likely) OEM one you remove and see how they compare.

I find it very unlikely a car cabin is sealed off enough for a filter to significantly improve on the conditioned, non allergenic space except in very limited (physical, environmental, physiological) circumstances.

have to agree with ido - that filter is more about keeping debris out of the fan than anything else.

I live on a gravel road.. and even with all windows up and car closed up tight, the very fine dust that gets stirred up by passing traffic finds its way into the car. there is no way to stop it.

coolant low in radiator or overflow?

Yes.

I read the boards and it seems like this is a common thing for new subarus, they dont check it. he last owner (from reading her gps history) and the wiff of perfume was of the get in and drive set to the restaurants and casinos. I need to check the oil changes next.

Topping  it off by a pint its much happier.
