Ea82 rebuild

Recommended Posts

  • 2 weeks later...

I am still in the middle of rebuilding my EA82. I sourced pistons 7 or 8 years ago that are only half the full rebore limit - 0.50mm or 20 thou. I recently had some block halves in for the rebore to match the pistons, and the hone. Not doing anything on the crank or main bearings as the block only had 90,000km on it before someone pulled the inlet manifold off, let coolant seep into the inlet ports and sit for a decade. I just sorted out my parts list of stuff and ordered from Subaru and others. My shed will be tidier (as will my head) once all back in one lump.

I'm doing more of a refresh than a rebuild on my 87 EA82 and sourcing parts from eBay, Rock Auto, etc. I'm buying seals and parts anywhere I can find them because one vendor won't have it all. Mine was a running engine but had low compression on one cylinder and found it was a blown head gasket on #3. It was down about 30 PSI during a standard compression test. I hate greasy, grimy engines so I pulled it completely out to clean it all up but I will not be splitting the case or doing a re-ring. I see no reason to go that deep when I had good oil pressure, compression and no smoke.

Im just a perfectionist. Yes it leaks oil on my driveway, but i mostly want to rebuild it because when I got it the cooling system was in shockingly terrible shape. Rad was beat, hole in two hoses. Oil was filthy and low.

Truth be told I could actually wait another 40k or 50k miles, but why wait?

@newmexguyhow much are you asking? I live in Eagle River, AK.

I like to pull the engines of new to me, new pan gaskets and seals where ever I can and Dremel wire brush things to like new - and then they pretty much stay that way or get washed back to clean if I get them dirty :) - so I know where you are coming from
